The last decade has witnessed a sharp increase in losses of arable land from salinisation. In Europe this is especially hard for the farmers in the Mediterranean countries where irrigation farming is very common and many fields have reached a soil salinity level which prevents farmers from raising common crops. This is a world wide problem in dry and semi-dry tropical regions. The losses in soil fertility in certain regions is so severe that rural populations are either starving, leaving their villages or requesting permanent living support through foreign aid.
In recent years several scientists in Europe have developed research projects for the sustainable utilisation of halophytes. Together with their North African, Arabian and South Asian colleagues they developed a research network which produced rapidly promising aspects for cashcrop halophytes. Most of their work was based on the collection of papers from an international meeting in Al Ain/UAE. This volume presents useful examples of research from that meeting and the presentation of new research topics. It was found that two avenues were of immediate need:

-The development of pilot projects and,
-The organisation of an international society for halophyte utilisation. Both aspects are dealt with in this book and together with other recent relevant publications will serve as a guide for future efforts to develop the common utilisation of cashcrop halophytes.
This volume will be of great value for all scientists and persons interested in R and D projects for the future use of halophytes and saline irrigation systems.

Focusing on Venezuela and Mexico, this edited volume from the International Society of Halophyte Utilisation (ISHU) explores the environmental issues facing South and Central America's coastal ecosystems, and discusses the uses of mangrove species and other halophytes in addressing issues of both coastal pollution and upland soil salinisation. The book presents a series of case studies and examines the economic potential of mangrove restoration and halophyte production.

This volume follows up a seminal meeting, presenting reports on progress made with recommendations made there. The text reports on the development of pilot projects and on the organization of an international organization. All this will serve as the foundation for future efforts to develop the common utilisation of cash crop halophytes.

The Symposium on high salinity tolerant plants, held at the University of Al Ain in December 1990, dealt primarily with plants tolerating salinity levels exceeding that of ocean water and which at the same time are promising for utilization in agriculture or forestry. These plants could be very useful for a country like the UAE where fresh water resources are very scarce and the groundwater available at some places is already very salty. More than 60 million woody trees/shrubs have been planted so far and more are planned for the inland plains underlain with brackish groundwater. These species were no solution for the widely barren shoreline of the UAE. Here mangrove species were of potential use, and one species, Avicennia Marina, occurs widely and has been successfully planted for about a decade. Converting the tree plantations into economically useful cropping systems is still a problem requiring much research and development. The book deals in several sections with conventional irrigation systems using marginal water. The species used in these systems are mostly hybrids of conventional crops. The irrigation systems, however, have similar problems as may be expected for irrigation with seawater. Papers show the participants' experiments in this area. The volume serves as a link between scientists working for the improvement of classical irrigation systems and those interested in the application of a new dimension of salinity levels for irrigation water.

Pflanzenschutzmittel werden vornehmlich in der Landwirtschaft zur Sicherung von Ernteertragen eingesetzt. Hier sind sie unentbehrlich, doch in Nahrungsmitteln sollten sie nicht vorhanden sein. Es sind aber verschiedene Wirkstoffe dieser Produkte in Grundwassern nachgewiesen worden, die zur Trinkwasserversorgung dienen.
Ca. 75% des Trinkwassers in Deutschland kommen aus dem Untergrund. Der sich daraus ergebenden Frage, in welchem Masse die Trinkwasserversorgung durch Pflanzenschutzmittel gefahrdet ist, sind die Autoren in einem von der Volkswagen-Stiftung geforderten Forschungsvorhaben nachgegangen. Unter Einbeziehung von Ergebnissen anderer nationaler und internationaler Arbeitsgruppen fasst der vorgelegte Bericht die gesammelten Erkenntnisse zusammen."

Von der Arbeits gruppe Systemforschung an der Universitat Osnabruck wird im Auftrag der International Union of Biologica1 Sciences (IUBS) ein Projekt zur Erstellung von sogenannten Element-Konzentrations- Katastern in OEkosystemen (ECCE) entwickelt, das alle grossen OEkosysteme der Erde einschliessen soll. Wahrend unserer Pilotstudien in den Jahren 1983-1986 ist es uns mit Hilfe befreundeter Wissenschaftler gelungen, zwischen 60 und 70 der etwa 90 naturlich vorkommenden Elemente zu erfassen. Die in den Arbeiten auftretenden Schwierigkeiten und Fehler, aber auch enormen Moeglichkeiten, die sich aus der Aufstellung von ECCEs fur die moderne OEkosystemanalyse ergaben, hatten uns dazu ermutigt, unsere bisherige Methodik und Fragestellungen der IUBS fur ein internationales Programm anzubieten. Die IUBS hat dieses Angebot angenommen und uns beauftragt, ein internationales Programm zu entwickeln. Der Wortlaut des Antrages, mit dem dieses Projekt der IUBS General Assembly 1985 in Budapestund 1986 in Syracuse N. Y., zur Annahme empfohlen wurde, ist im Anhang wiedergegeben. Als wesentliche Grunde fur das Projekt sind darin angegeben, dass vollstandige Elementaranalysen folgende Vorteile fur die OEkosystemforschung bringen werden: VI 1. Sie werden die Basisinformation fur den globalen Kreislauf aller chemischen Elemente liefern. 2. Sie werden Elementbilanzen fur die verschiedenen OEkosysteme in den unterschiedlichen klimatischen und edaphischen Bedingungen ermoeglichen. 3. Sie koennen den Einfluss verschiedener Elementkonzentrationen auf die Evolution von Pflanzen- und Tierarten aufzeigen. 4. Sie koennen den Einfluss der Elementkonzentrationen auf die Vegetations- und Bodenstruktur in den . verschiedenen OEkosystemen aufzeigen. 5. Sie koennen die Verteilungsmuster der einzelnen Elemente in den pflanzlichen und tierischen Organismen des OEkosystems liefern.

Wenn es im Universum intelligente Beobachter wie uns Menschen gibt, mssen die Naturgesetze dies ermglichen. Dieses einfache anthropische Prinzip wird gesteigert durch die Annahme, dass die Naturgesetze solche intelligenten Beobachter sogar zwingend hervorbringen (das so genannte Erste und Zweite, bzw. das schwache und starke anthropische Prinzip). Die in diesem Buch umrissenen Gedanken begrnden auf der Basis moderner Thermodynamik ein noch weitergehendes drittes bzw. "ganz starkes anthropisches" Prinzip: Die Erkenntnis "Gottes" hat ebenfalls mit Eigenschaften des Universums zu tun. Der Mensch ist prinzipiell zu zwei Formen von Erkenntnis - naturwissenschaftlicher wie auch religiser - befhigt und braucht auch beide, um als nicht nur als einzelne Aspekte wissendes, sondern auch ethisch verantwortliches Wesen leben und handeln zu knnen.
