In recent years there has been steadily increasing interest in motor behavior and a growing awareness that a person not only has to know what to do in a particular situation, but also how to do it. The question of how actions are performed is of central concern in the area of motor control. This volume provides an advanced-level treatment of some of the main issues. Experiments concerned with basic processes of motor control typ ically examine very simple movements. At first glance these tasks appear to be far removed from real-world tasks, but it should be kept in mind that they are not studied for their own sake. One of the main reasons for using them is the well-recognized, but sometimes questioned, scientific principle that basic laws may be discovered more easily in simple situations than iIi complex situations. Another reason is that the simple tasks studied constitute building blocks of more complex tasks. For example, some complex skills can be consid ered as consisting of sequences of aimed movements, although, as no one would doubt, knowing everything about these individual movements does not mean knowing everything about, for example, typing. The first two chapters of the present volume focus on behavioral and physiological studies of programming and preparation of move ments. In the first chapter D. Rosenbaum introduces the concept of a motor program that is set up in advance of the overt movement."

The development of database technology has currently reached the stage of deductive database systems which use Horn clauses for defining relations. An important characteristic of these systems is the clear separation of logic and control. However, the programmer cannot affect the control part of a deductive database system. To eliminate this deficiency, this monograph presents a so-called expert deductive database system that allows explicit control of the deduction process. The system consists of an object-level describing the logical aspects of a problem and of a meta-level that contains application-specific control information affecting the object-level deduction process. For example, object-level rules can be disregarded, and some tuples deduced at the object-level can be preferred to others. Besides the architecture of this system, the book also identifies some important possibilities of deduction control which are explained by characteristic examples.

Documentary exploring what life was like for classical musicians in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) after the division of Germany in 1945. Used to advertise the merits of the GDR, classical music was portrayed by the authorities as representative of a culture-loving working people, in direct contrast to the 'decadent', westernised pop music of the day. Those musicians who were not only gifted but also displayed the correct ideological values were able to enjoy privileges beyond the reach of the masses. Through interviews with musicians active at the time, both in the GDR and the Federal Republic of Germany (FDR), the film compares and contrasts the lives of those involved, and provides an insight into the way the political system influenced artistic life.
