In an age when continued financial and other support for teaching
and research in sociology cannot be taken for granted, sociologists
have been surprisingly slow to provide a clear statement of the
achievements of sociology in the western world since 1950. What Has
Sociology Achieved? does this by assembling twelve essays specially
commissioned from distinguished authors, to which the editors add
an introduction setting out the issues and a concluding chapter
which draws together recurrent themes.
Social Impact Assessment (SIA) is the process of analysing and
managing the intended and unintended consequences on the human
environment of planned interventions (policies, programmes, plans,
projects) so as to bring about a more sustainable and equitable
biophysical and human environment. This important Handbook presents
an indispensable overview of the range of new methods and of the
conceptual advances in SIA. Recent increased attention to social
considerations has led to substantial development in the techniques
useful to, and the thinking in, SIA. A distinguished group of
contributors provides an up-to-date and comprehensive account of
the cutting-edge in SIA development. This Handbook outlines a new
understanding and definition of SIA and, as such, will be an
invaluable reference tool for both practitioners and scholars at
different levels working in the fields of SIA and environmental
studies (including both impact assessment and management).

For those who care about the future of sociology, these 12 essays draw together recurrent themes covering analytical, hermeneutic and historico-institutional traditions. Theory, research methods and applications are also discussed.;Henk Becker has also edited "Impact Assessment Today" with A.L.Porter and "Sociologie en Verzorgingsstaat" with P.Glassbergen.
This publication represents the report of the Scenario Committee on
Ageing. The draft report was discussed with a wide range of
experts, inter alia during the symposium 'Growing Old in the
Future' held on October 27th, 1984. In addition to the scenario
report, a background report containing the basic analysis employed
in the scenarios on ageing has been prepared. The scenario report
has been written in such a way that it can be read independently of
the background study. Scenarios are a relatively new phenomenon in
health care and related policy. For this reason it might be useful
to furnish the reader with a few suggestions. As a first step,
perusing the summary will provide the reader with an ~verall
picture of this application of the scenario method in policy
preparation and policy implementation in the sector health of the
elderly. As a second step, we would recommend that the scenario
report be read in its totality. It might be useful to note down
points on which the reader would like to make additions or
variations.
