In addition the volume contains all papers of H. Cartan on analytic functions published before 1939. Mathematics has a certain mystique, for it is pure and ex- act, yet demands remarkable creativity. This reputation is reinforced by its characteristic abstraction and its own in- dividual language, which often disguise its origins in and connections with the physical world. Publishing mathematics, therefore, requires special effort and talent. Heinz G-tze, who has dedicated his life to scientific pu- blishing, took up this challenge with his typical enthusi- asm. This Festschrift celebrates his invaluable contribu- tions to the mathematical community, many of whose leading members he counts among his personal friends. The articles, written by mathematicians from around the world and coming from diverse fields, portray the important role of mathematics in our culture. Here, the reflections of important mathematicians, often focused on the history of mathematics, are collected, in recognition of Heinz G-tze's life-longsupport of mathematics.
When this book was written, methods of algebraic topology had caused revolutions in the world of pure algebra. To clarify the advances that had been made, Cartan and Eilenberg tried to unify the fields and to construct the framework of a fully fledged theory. The invasion of algebra had occurred on three fronts through the construction of cohomology theories for groups, Lie algebras, and associative algebras. This book presents a single homology (and also cohomology) theory that embodies all three; a large number of results is thus established in a general framework. Subsequently, each of the three theories is singled out by a suitable specialization, and its specific properties are studied. The starting point is the notion of a module over a ring. The primary operations are the tensor product of two modules and the groups of all homomorphisms of one module into another. From these, "higher order" derived of operations are obtained, which enjoy all the properties usually attributed to homology theories. This leads in a natural way to the study of "functors" and of their "derived functors." This mathematical masterpiece will appeal to all mathematicians working in algebraic topology.

WeierstraB war also ein Kollege von Paul Dubois Reymond, von Helmholtz, von Mommsen und Virchow. Karl WeierstraB ist ein Kind unseres Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen. Er wurde am 31. Oktober 1815 in Ostenfelde, Kreis Warendorf, also im Miinsterland, geboren. Seinen starken westf?lischen Akzent und seine politischen Auffassungen, mit denen er sich in der damaligen Zeit in PreuBen zu einer Minderheit rechnete, hat er niemals verleugnet. Er ist immer ein Westfale geblieben. Die Familie seines Vaters stammt aus Mettmann, also aus der unmittelbaren N?he dieser Stadt. So haben wir alle Griinde, seiner hier zu gedenken. Die groBe Zeit von WeierstraB liegt in den siebziger und achtziger Jahren des vorigen Jahrhunderts. Er galt damals schlechtweg als die Autorit't fur Strenge in den mathematischen SchluBweisen. Er war im Ausland, in einer Zeit, in der internationale wissenschaftliche Beziehungen sehr viel schwieriger waren als heute, ebenso angesehen wie in Deutschland.
