blind tyrannies and barbarous cruelties, with which the enemy of
the human race had for so long afflicted them and brought them up
for himself. From this cause the crown and sceptre of Spain has
come to extend itself over all that the sun looks on, from its
rising to its setting, with the glory and splendour of its power
and majesty; but surpassing any of the other princes of the earth
by having gained innumerable souls for heaven, which has been
Spain's principal intention and wealth. And besides much riches and
the treasures which she enjoys, together with memorable deeds and
victories which she has won, so that throughout the universe her
great name is praised and celebrated, and the perseverance and
valour of her vassals, who have accomplished these deeds and poured
out their blood. Having won America, a fourth part of the earth
which the ancients never knew, they sailed following the sun, and
discovered in the Western Ocean an archipelago of many islands,
adjacent to further Asia, inhabited by various nations, abounding
in rich metals, precious stones, and pearls, and all manner of
fruit. Where, raising the standard of the Faith, they snatched them
from the yoke and power of the devil, and placed them under her
command and government: so that justly may they raise in those
isles the pillars and trophies of Ncm pfas ultra, which the famous

The publications of the Hakluyt Society (founded in 1846) made
available edited (and sometimes translated) early accounts of
exploration. The first series, which ran from 1847 to 1899,
consists of 100 books containing published or previously
unpublished works by authors from Christopher Columbus to Sir
Francis Drake, and covering voyages to the New World, to China and
Japan, to Russia and to Africa and India. This 1866 volume contains
an English translation of a Spanish manuscript version of a
document originally written in Portuguese about 1514. The supposed
author, Duarte Barbosa, who may have been a relative of Magellan,
is said to have spent sixteen years exploring the Indian Ocean. The
complex history of this manuscript narrative is given in detail in
the translator's preface, and the book has explanatory notes and an
index.
Duarte Barbosa (circa 1480, Lisbon, Portugal - 1 May 1521,
Philippines) was a Portuguese writer and Portuguese India officer
between 1500 and 1516-17, with the post of scrivener in the
Cannanore Factory in India and sometimes interpreter of the local
language (Malayalam). His "Book of Duarte Barbosa" (Livro de Duarte
Barbosa) is one of the earliest examples of Portuguese travel
literature, written circa 1516, shortly after his arrival in the
Indian Ocean. In 1519 Duarte Barbosa embarked on the first
expedition to circumnavigate the world, led by his brother-in-law
Ferdinand Magellan, dying in 1521 at a feast held by the Rajah
Humabon in Cebu in the Philippines.
