Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made

The red deer, majestic monarch of the glen, is Britain’s largest
land mammal and undisputed king of woodlands and glens. Common
across the Scottish Highlands and resident elsewhere, the animal is
emblematic of our wild country and a beloved icon. Yet to some, red
deer are seen as little more than pests. Born into a family of deer
stalkers, Neil McIntyre has been fascinated by red deer all his
life. They have been central to his career as a wildlife
photographer and, in this stunning collection of photographs, he
invites you to know and respect them as he does.
In the Fall of 1975 we started a joint project with the ultimate
goal of topo logically classifying real algebraic sets. This has
been a long happy collaboration (c.f., [K2)). In 1985 while
visiting M.S.R.1. we organized and presented our classification
results up to that point in the M.S.R.1. preprint series [AK14]
-[AK17]. Since these results are interdependent and require some
prerequisites as well as familiarity with real algebraic geometry,
we decided to make them self contained by presenting them as a part
of a book in real algebraic geometry. Even though we have not
arrived to our final goal yet we feel that it is time to introduce
them in a self contained coherent version and demonstrate their use
by giving some applications. Chapter I gives the overview of the
classification program. Chapter II has all the necessary background
for the rest of the book, which therefore can be used as a course
in real algebraic geometry. It starts with the elementary
properties of real algebraic sets and ends with the recent solution
of the Nash Conjecture. Chapter III and Chapter IV develop the
theory of resolution towers. Resolution towers are basic
topologically defined objects generalizing the notion of manifold.

Colonel Keith Davenport (Gary Merrill) is more of a friend than a
commander to his men, a US bomber crew stationed in wartime
Britain. After a series of dangerous missions, the pilots are
living on their nerves and when Davenport is replaced by the
callous General Savage (Gregory Peck), the latter's attempts to
whip the crew into shape result in a deluge of requests for
transfers. However, young Lieutenent Bishop (Robert Patten) rallies
his fellow pilots, and soon they and Savage begin to develop a
mutual respect.

Mark Langworthy has just returned home after a stint as a
colonial administrator in India. Once a promising writer, his
dreams and idealism have been extinguished, and he returns stricken
with malaria and fatigued in both body and spirit. When he meets
his nephew, Paul, an ingenuous orphan of eighteen and an aspiring
writer, Mark sees in the boy a chance for redemption. Over the
course of an English summer they form a close though sometimes
difficult friendship, but when Paul begins a love affair with one
of his uncle's former acquaintances, Anne, things begin to unravel.
A series of circumstances threatens the bond they have developed,
and when Anne suggests that Mark's interest in Paul may not be what
it seems, both Mark and Paul will have to come to terms with their
feelings and discover the true nature of love and friendship.
Published in 1948, "An Air That Kills" is the third of Francis
King's more than thirty novels. Widely acclaimed as one of the
finest novelists of his generation, King displays in this early
work all the imaginative energy and ardour of a young writer
dealing with a theme which he clearly felt profoundly. This 60th
anniversary edition includes a new introduction by the author.
