By the early 1900s, the Ottoman Empire was beginning to dissolve. Upon seeing this weakness, Germany set its own plans into action in the capital of Constantinople-to bring the vast Turkish Empire under its control. In this book, American statesman HENRY MORGENTHAU SR. (1856-1946) details how Turkey fell under the influence of Germany and how this led to the Armenian Genocide. In a trial run of the extermination of the Jews, the Germans orchestrated the murder and exile of the Armenians from Turkey, with "Turkey for the Turks" as a rallying cry. The similarities to the Holocaust are chilling.Anyone intrigued by the history and politics of Eastern Europe will find Morgenthau's memoir enlightening. And scholars will gain great insight from reading this first-hand account of an often forgotten tragedy.

R780 Discovery Miles 7 800 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The evocative, first-hand accounts of American ambassador Henry Morgenthau regarding the Armenian genocide are one of the most thorough, authoritative sources on the atrocities. This book contains the full accounts of Henry Morgenthau throughout his posting in Constantinople, Turkey. At the time the Ottoman Empire was on the brink of collapse; amid the chaos and upheaval began the Armenian genocide, a ruthless campaign of targeted killing which occurred over eight years, from 1915 to 1923. As ambassador, Henry Morgenthau received regular, excruciating reports of mass murder and forced deportation. Despite the efforts of Henry Morgenthau to convince his superiors in Washington to intervene on humanitarian grounds, his pleas fell on deaf ears. The evidence he personally reviewed and verified are related in this book, as are many high-level meetings Morgenthau personally held with Ottoman leaders in an attempt to stem the holocaust of the Armenian people.

It was some time before the story of the Armenian atrocities reached the American Embassy in all its horrible details. In January and February fragmentary reports began to filter in, but the tendency was at first to regard them as mere manifestations of the disorders that had prevailed in the Armenian provinces for many years. When the reports came from Urumia, both Enver and Talaat dismissed them as wild exaggerations.

By this time the American people have probably become convinced that the Germans deliberately planned the conquest of the world. Yet they hesitate to convict on circumstantial evidence and for this reason all eye witnesses to this, the greatest crime in modern history, should volunteer their testimony. I have therefore laid aside any scruples I had as to the propriety of disclosing to my fellow countrymen the facts which I learned while representing them in Turkey. I acquired this knowledge as the servant of the American people, and it is their property as much as it is mine. I greatly regret that I have been obliged to omit an account of the splendid activities of the American Missionary and Educational Institutions in Turkey, but to do justice to this subject would require a book by itself. I have had to omit the story of the Jews in Turkey for the same reasons. My thanks are due to my friend, Mr. Burton J. Hendrick, for the invaluable assistance he has rendered in the preparation of the book Henry Morgenthau.
