for soprano solo and SATB unaccompanied In this innovative
arrangement Stanley M. Hoffman takes Henry Purcell's most popular
solo aria, the 'Lament' from his opera Dido and Aeneas, and
reimagines it as a work for unaccompanied soprano solo and SATB
choir, thus making a staple of the solo song repertoire available
for choral performance. The chromatic passage that opens the piece
is sung wordlessly by the bass section, and Hoffman's setting
features imaginative interplay between chorus and soloist, sharing
the well-known lyrics between them, and sensitive dynamic
contrasts.
A piece set for unison or two-part voices and piano.
Originally published in 1928, this book contains an edition of John
Dryden's play King Arthur, which was first performed in 1691. The
subsequent alterations made by Henry Purcell are noted where they
alter or expand the text. This book will be of value to anyone with
an interest in English opera or Restoration drama.
First published in 1931, this book presents the text of Thomas
Purcell's opera The Fairy Queen, which was performed in this form
as an acted adaptation at the New Theatre, Cambridge from 10-14
February 1931. Purcell based his opera on A Midsummer Night's Dream
and this version was altered to incorporate more dialogue from
Shakespeare's play in place of changes made by an anonymous
librettist in 1692. This book will be of value to anyone with an
interest in Purcell and Shakespeare.
for SSATB soloists, SSATB choir, two trumpets, strings and continuo
Written for St Cecilia's Day 1694, Purcell's popular Te Deum and
Jubilate in D was the first work of its kind to be scored for
orchestra, and it became the model for future settings of the text
by Blow, Croft, and Handel. This new edition by Robert King has
been prepared using the earliest available source material,
combining up-to-date scholarship with a clear and practical layout.
The edition includes an organ reduction for rehearsal purposes.
Orchestral material is available on hire/rental.
for organ
This is a marvellous collection of pieces by Henry Purcell newly
arranged for the organ by concert organist Martin Setchell.
Purcell's music works perfectly on the organ, and a number of his
pieces have long been popular with players. This volume brings
together all those must-have pieces - the trumpet tunes, rondeau
from Abdelazer, and so on - and combines these with a wonderful
selection of lesser-known pieces from across Purcell's work. There
are sprightly curtain tunes and hornpipes from the stage pieces,
lovely reflective songs and airs, and a wide range of dances and
chaconnes. The result is a set of pieces with wide and varied
church and concert use, perfectly accessible to intermediate
players. Publication in 2009 coincides with the 350th anniversary
of the composer's birth, and the volume makes a valuable addition
to any organist's repertoire.
An opera with instrumental parts for strings, keyboard continuo,
plus optional guitar for dances This edition, with English and
German texts, is based on that by Edward Dent (first published in
1925), but includes more recent scholarship. The preface presents a
history of the work. The score is both scholarly and practical for
performers.
An impressive, deeply felt anthem by a master of English choral
music for 8-part mixed choir with optional organ continuo.
Music examples and charts illustrate the analyses, and each
essay is fully annotated by the editor. In some cases, the results
of original research by the editor or by others working in the
field are published here for the first time. Much of the material
has never before appeared in English.
A score embodying the best available musical text.
Historical background-what is known of the circumstances
surrounding the origin of the work, including (where relevant)
original source material.
A detailed analysis of the music, by the editor of the volume or
another well-known scholar.
Other significant analytic essays and critical comments,
exposing the student to a variety of opinions about the music.
The tercentenary of the death of world-famous English Baroque composer Henry Purcell (most widely known for his opera "Dido and Aeneas") will be celebrated everywhere. This volume offers an opportunity to choral associations to join the celebration. With Purcell's expertise in setting the English language, ten of the eleven anthems are in English (one in Latin). The editor, secretary to the Purcell Society, has selected those most representative and most useful, from among the composer's prodigious output.

Henry Purcell's only Opera proper, Dido and Aeneas is a magnificent
example of English Baroque music, with lively dances and passionate
aria sections that demonstrate Purcell's masterful compositional
and choral writing skill. Based on a libretto by Nahum Tate it was
first performed in 1689, comprises three acts and lasts about an
hour. Filled with dramatic lyricism with a wide range of musical
and emotional content, it is a monumental Baroque composition
considered to be one of England's foremost operatic works. Dido and
Aeneas contains all the elements for a successful opera including a
shipwreck, sorcery, love and lost love and death. This is the Vocal
and Full Operatic Score, edited by Margaret Laurie and Thurston
Dart. With its interesting and imaginative realization and
authentic editorial process this is an excellent edition that
features some performing choices and variants and also includes the
reconstructed prologue.
This is a facsimile of the 1726 edition of "The First Book - The 3d
Edition, very much Enlarg'd and Corrected; also Four Excellent
Anthems of the late Mr. H. Purcell's, never before Printed."
