Industrial Employment and Unemployment in West Yorkshire - A Statistical Review of Recent Trends (Hardcover): J. Henry... Industrial Employment and Unemployment in West Yorkshire - A Statistical Review of Recent Trends (Hardcover)
J. Henry Richardson
R3,023 Discovery Miles 30 230 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

First Published in 1936, Industrial Employment and Unemployment in West Yorkshire presents the trends of employment and unemployment on the basis of official statistics. West Yorkshire is in many respects a representative British industrial region. Though not enjoying as great prosperity as London and the South Midlands, it has escaped the severe depression experienced in Lancashire, South Wales, Scotland, and the North of England. The position in the predepression years, the magnitude of the depression and the course of the recovery are brought under review. These changes inevitably affect the industrial structure of an area. An estimate is made of the surplus of labour in the area and of the possibility of reabsorbing this surplus into industry. This book is an essential archival resource for scholars and researchers of British economy, labour economics, labour history and economics in general.

Economic and Financial Aspects of Social Security - An International Survey (Hardcover): J. Henry Richardson Economic and Financial Aspects of Social Security - An International Survey (Hardcover)
J. Henry Richardson
R3,502 Discovery Miles 35 020 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

First Published in 1960, Economic and Financial Aspects of Social Security presents an important intervention by Professor J. Henry Richardson, an experienced authority on social security. Specially valuable is the chapter which considers what proportion of national income can be afforded for social security and also that on the alternatives of financing by accumulating large funds or by 'pay-as-you-go' methods. The author directs particular attention to age and retirement and urges that both social security systems and industrial organization should be so devised as to give encouragement and facilities for older people to continue working as long as they are fit. He also discusses remedies for poverty arising from sickness and large families with low incomes. The value of social security as a factor in economic security and in the redistribution of income, safeguards against inflation, and the problem of saving today for consumption in the future are also examined. This book is an essential read for scholars and researchers of political economy, labour economics and economics in general

John Rawls is the preeminent political philosopher of our time. His 1971 masterpiece, A Theory of Justice, permanently changed the landscape of moral political theory, revitalizing the normative study of social issues and taking stands about justice, ethics, rationality and philosophical method that continue to draw followers and critics today.

In these five volumes, Henry S. Richardson and Paul Weithman draw together almost 90 of the most incisive and influential articles in that body of literature. The reprinted articles, many of them drawn from difficult-to-find sources, cover the gamut of controversies and conversations sparked by Rawls's work and represent a wide range of philosophical points of view. The selection also includes articles that reflect Rawls's reception in economics, law, and the social science more broadly.

The publication of these five volumes will be welcomed by students and scholars of contemporary political philosophy, and by anyone interested in the most probing reactions to the premier political philosopher of our time.

Articulating the Moral Community - Toward a Constructive Ethical Pragmatism (Hardcover): Henry Richardson Articulating the Moral Community - Toward a Constructive Ethical Pragmatism (Hardcover)
Henry Richardson
R1,564 Discovery Miles 15 640 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Is morality fixed objectively, independently of all human judgment, or do we "invent" right and wrong? Articulating the Moral Community argues that neither of these simple answers is correct. Its central thesis is that, working within zones of objective indeterminacy, the moral community-the community of all persons-has the authority to introduce new moral norms. Unlike political communities, which are centralized, non-inclusive, and backed by coercion, the moral community is decentralized, inclusive, and not coercively backed. This book explains in detail how its structure arises from efforts by individuals to work out intelligently with one another how to respond to morally important concerns. Developing a novel theory of dyadic rights and duties based on this phenomenon, the book argues that conscientious efforts of this kind provide moral input, authoritative only over the parties involved. After sufficient uptake and reflective acceptance by the moral community, however, these innovations become new moral norms. This account of the moral community's moral authority is motivated by, and supports, a type of normative ethical theory, constructive ethical pragmatism, which-to use an unfashionable distinction defended in the book-rejects the consequentialist claim that rightness is to be defined as a function of goodness and the deontological claim that principles of right stand fixed, independently of the good. It holds, rather, that what we ought to do depends on our continuing efforts to specify the right and the good in light of each other.
