This book is formulated from the papers presented at the International Symposium on "Membrane Biochemistry and Bioenergetics," held at the Rensselaerville Institute, Rensselaerville, New York, August 1986, in honor of Tsoo E. King on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of reconstitution of arespiratory chain system by Professor David Keilin and Tsoo E. King. Professor Tsoo E. King, to whom this volume is dedicated, has made enormous contributions to the field of isolation and reconstitution of membrane proteins and has continued to explore the frontiers of bioener getics. In particular, his persistent proposals on the existence of ubiquinone binding proteins from conceptualization to experimentation eventually convinced many scientists to study these proteins further . Professor King's preparation of reconstitutively active succinate dehydrogenase opened a new avenue in the fie1d of membrane bioenergetics, and his work has been greatly appreciated. The purpose of the symposium was to bring together scientists from diverse disciplines related to membrane bioenergetics to discuss the recent developments in the field. This symposium, initiated by the Capital District Bioenergetics Group, was attended by 100 scientists, 80 of whom presented their recent discoveries. The symposium was arranged in a sequence of platform lectures, poster presentations and discussion sessions so that all the participants had opportunities to discuss the subjects presented. Most of the participants contributed a chapter to this volume. We would like to express our regret to many other scientists including Professor King's friends, colleagues and students who could not attend due to various reasons."

The collection encompasses happenings in different places and times, ranging from early nineteenth century Italy or America to contemporary accounts either in America or South America. Several present the many facets of love. In some cases, unusual responses of a man or a woman are guided by unexpected expressions of love. For example, a disturbed Viet Nam veteran after witnessing the birth of a girl becomes a hidden, one-man protection squad while she is growing up. He saves her from a number of situations including a kidnapping and possible murder. In another story, a girl is being trained as a trickster by her grandfather. In trying to con a young man she falls in love with him. Many other yarns have different twists and turns. Six are mystery/adventure stories having surprising denouements.

The story of Double presents Tracy as an intelligent and spirited young woman who thought she was trapped by the bad choices of her past. When out in the world she demonstrates warmth, courage and caring that she had never been given a chance to show before. Tracy, in prison for killing her abusive husband, thought she'd never get out. So much of her life wasted. But unexpectedly, she is given a chance-a remote chance-to get out when a police task force proposes that in exchange for a possible pardon by the governor she impersonate her double, her identical twin sister Carolyn who she had never even met. Carolyn had been murdered in Mexico because of her involvement with a drug ring. The two sisters had been separated at birth; Carolyn adopted by a socially prominent couple. There would be danger, but Tracy decides to take a chance. What the hell-what did she have to lose, except maybe her life? Tracy's odyssey as Carolyn is full of unexpected twists and turns; friendship, love, compassion, betrayal.

It is an exciting time. Mexico and Brazil have just declared their independence and in the USA, the Erie Canal has just been opened. after his adventures to retrieve his lost love. Irony is a contemporary story. A reporter of international reputation is studying the events taking place under a cruel dictatorship in a South American country. He risks his life more than once. Both the CIA and the dictator wish that he'd disappear. Embroiled in the survival of a charismatic woman, a guerilla leader, he eventually saves her life, falls in love with her and brings her to safety in the USA.

Where the previous collection ("Long and Short Stories") ranges from suspense and mystery to whimsical, the present stories ("More Long and Short Stories") emphasize the drama and sometimes the comedy of the human condition. Each has a different focus, from the difficulties inherent in encounters between men and women, growing up and aging to the problems of academic life and its frequently unrecognized traumas.
