Mach's Principle - From Newton's Bucket to Quantum Gravity (Hardcover, 1995 ed.): Julian B. Barbour, Herbert Pfister Mach's Principle - From Newton's Bucket to Quantum Gravity (Hardcover, 1995 ed.)
Julian B. Barbour, Herbert Pfister
R6,622 Discovery Miles 66 220 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume is a collection of scholarly articles on the Mach Principle, the impact that this theory has had since the end of the 19th century, and its role in helping Einstein formulate the doctrine of general relativity. 20th-century physics is concerned with the concepts of time, space, motion, inertia and gravity. The documentation on all of these makes this book a reference for those who are interested in the history of science and the theory of general relativity.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a major cause of cervical cancer. Human Papillomavirus Infections in Dermatovenereology pulls together the diverse disciplines of clinical, molecular biological, socio epidemiological, and immunological research to bridge the gap between the clinical aspects and basic biology of HPV. This volume provides a much-needed overview of the scientific and clinical data of HPV and HPV-associated diseases, exploring opinions on current therapies and diagnostic methods. It critically reviews the most frequently used molecular biologic methods, evaluating their potential in HPV detection. Specialists in dermatology, genitourinary medicine, gynecology, urology, as well as pathologists, microbiologists, epidemiologists, and virologists will appreciate this timely examination of the ubiquitous pathogen, HPV.

Inertia and Gravitation - The Fundamental Nature and Structure of Space-Time (Paperback, 2015 ed.): Herbert Pfister, Markus King Inertia and Gravitation - The Fundamental Nature and Structure of Space-Time (Paperback, 2015 ed.)
Herbert Pfister, Markus King
R1,848 Discovery Miles 18 480 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book focuses on the phenomena of inertia and gravitation, one objective being to shed some new light on the basic laws of gravitational interaction and the fundamental nature and structures of spacetime. Chapter 1 is devoted to an extensive, partly new analysis of the law of inertia. The underlying mathematical and geometrical structure of Newtonian spacetime is presented from a four-dimensional point of view, and some historical difficulties and controversies - in particular the concepts of free particles and straight lines - are critically analyzed, while connections to projective geometry are also explored. The relativistic extensions of the law of gravitation and its intriguing consequences are studied in Chapter 2. This is achieved, following the works of Weyl, Ehlers, Pirani and Schild, by adopting a point of view of the combined conformal and projective structure of spacetime. Specifically, Mach's fundamental critique of Newton's concepts of 'absolute space' and 'absolute time' was a decisive motivation for Einstein's development of general relativity, and his equivalence principle provided a new perspective on inertia. In Chapter 3 the very special mathematical structure of Einstein's field equations is analyzed, and some of their remarkable physical predictions are presented. By analyzing different types of dragging phenomena, Chapter 4 reviews to what extent the equivalence principle is realized in general relativity - a question intimately connected to the 'new force' of gravitomagnetism, which was theoretically predicted by Einstein and Thirring but which was only recently experimentally confirmed and is thus of current interest.

Genital Papillomavirus Infections provides a state of the art survey on the clinical aspects, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of genital papillomavirus infections, written by experts in the respective fields. Two introductory sections on epidemiology and molecular biology are followed by chapters on new techniques for the detection of genital papillomaviruses and their presence in genital carcinomas. Contributions on the clinical aspects cover infections of the cervix, male and female external genitalia, urethra, and oral cavity. A discussion of the immunobiology of papillomaviruses ends in an evaluation of the prospects for vaccination, and the application of podophyllotoxin, cryosurgery, laser therapy, and interferon treatment are described in detail. This book is unique in placing a strong emphasis on clinical aspects of genital papillomavirus infections. Mainly addressed to clinicians, it provides practical guidelines on methods for their diagnosis and treatment.

Papillomaviruses and Human Cancer (Hardcover): Herbert Pfister Papillomaviruses and Human Cancer (Hardcover)
Herbert Pfister
R8,534 Discovery Miles 85 340 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume gives special reference to papillomaviruses in benign precursor lesions related to genital tumors, plus it provides a basis for a more reproducible evaluation of the pathology of papillomavirus-induced lesions. It deals with the molecular biology of papillomaviruses as it relates to our understanding of viral cell transformation and malignant conversion. Written in a comprehensive, easy-to-read format, this book covers points of medical interest such as diagnosis, therapy, and prospects for vaccination. This fascinating text provides current, state-of-the-art practices for immediate and future medical research. Virologists, microbiologists, and cancer researchers will find this work interesting and resourceful.
