In the past few decades, growth in the wind energy sector has been most phenomenal among all renewable energy resources. In this context, it is nearly universally agreed that wind energy can definitely play an important part in ensuring a sustainable future.The topic is highly interdisciplinary and requires an accessible format for non-experts. Hence, this compact version is suitable for many students and practitioners who intend to read concisely on wind energy.

Noch immer vergeht kein Tag ohne Meldungen in der Tagespresse iiber Umwelt aspekte. Fast keine Ausgabe von energietechnischen und energiewirtschaftlichen Fachzeitschriften erscheint mehr ohne Beitrage zu speziellen umwelttechnischen Verfahren, zu umweltpolitischen Entscheidungen, die einzelne Detailprobleme betreffen, und zu ihren Folgen. Was fehlt, ist eine fachiibergreifende sachbezogene Darstellung der Fakten, die eine vergleichende Einordnung von einzelnen Problemen erm6glicht. Diese Liicke wollten wir fiillen. So erschien unser Buch erstmalig im Jahre 1992, als Sachbuch geschrieben, urn auch Niehtfachfrauen und -manner anzusprechen. Der Anfang geht aber bis in die siebziger Jahre zuriick, als wir fUr eine Informationsveranstal tung erstmals unter dem Titel Energie und Umwelt einen Uberblick erarbeite ten. Damals standen die Umweltbelastungen der Stromerzeugung mit Kohle und Kernenergie im Vordergrund. Dies hat sich inzwischen erheblich geandert - das Spektrum der Fragen ist breiter, tiefer und angemessener geworden. In der zweiten notwendig gewordenen Auflage haben sich in Teilgebieten Ver schiebungen ergeben. Wintersmog ist beispielsweise dank der bisher erreichten Emissionsminderungen kein Thema mehr. Der Sommersmog dagegen ist ein Thema geworden. Diesen Entwicklungen haben wir Rechnung getragen. Auch haben wir den Wunsch von Studenten an Fachhochschulen und Universitaten, einige Themen zu vertiefen, erfUllt. Das Sachbuch ist damit zu einem Fachbuch geworden. Geblieben aber ist der verstandliche Stil der Darbietung des Stoffs."

Dieses Buch beschAftigt sich mit den MAglichkeiten und Grenzen des Einsatzes umfangreicher Optimierungsmodelle zur Beantwortung umweltrelevanter Probleme der Energieversorgung. Am Beispiel des in der Systemanalyseforschung in JA1/4lich entwickelten MARNES-Modells wird fast lehrbuchhaft der Weg von der vorgegebenen Fragestellung A1/4ber die Modellierung selbst bis hin zur Anwendung aufgezeigt. Breiten Raum nehmen die AusfA1/4hrungen zum Linearen Programmieren und zur datenmAAigen Charakterisierung der Technologien ein. Mit diesem Buch liegt erstmals eine detaillierte Beschreibung eines Energie- "und" Umweltmodells vor. Das Buch wendet sich an Wissenschaftler in der Systemanalyse und im Operations Research genauso wie an die Praktiker in den Planungsabteilungen der Energiewirtschaft und in den verschiedenen Affentlichen Institutionen.
