Citizen Inquiry: Synthesising Science and Inquiry Learning is the
first book of its kind to bring together the concepts of citizen
science and inquiry-based learning to illustrate the pedagogical
advantages of this approach. It shifts the emphasis of scientific
investigations from scientists to the general public, by educating
learners of all ages to determine their own research agenda and
devise their own investigations underpinned by a model of
scientific inquiry. 'Citizen inquiry' is an original approach to
research education that refers to mass participation of the public
in joining inquiry-led scientific investigations. Using a range of
practical case studies underpinned by the theory of inquiry-based
learning, this book has significant implications for teaching and
learning through exploration of how new technologies can be used to
engage with scientific research. Key features include: a new
perspective on science education and science practice through
crowd-sourced research explanation of the benefits of this
innovative approach to teaching and learning a steady shift of
emphasis from theory to application for readers to understand
thoroughly the current state of research in the field and its
applications to practice examples of practical applications of this
approach and recommendations on how successful citizen inquiry
applications can be developed. This edited volume is essential
reading for academic researchers and professional educators
interested in the potential of online technology in all levels of
education, from primary and secondary level through to further
education and lifelong learning. It will be ideal reading on any
undergraduate or postgraduate course involving research methods in
education as well as developments in science education and
educational software.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 46th
International Conference on Current Trends in Theory and Practice
of Informatics, SOFSEM 2020, held in Limassol, Cyprus, in January
2020. The 40 full papers presented together with 17 short papers
and 3 invited papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 125
submissions. They presented new research results in the theory and
practice of computer science in the each sub-area of SOFSEM 2020:
foundations of computer science, foundations of data science and
engineering, foundations of software engineering, and foundations
of algorithmic computational biology.
Timely and cost-effective analytics over ""big data"" has emerged
as a key ingredient for success in many businesses, scientific and
engineering disciplines, and government endeavors. Web clicks,
social media, scientific experiments, and datacenter monitoring are
among data sources that generate vast amounts of raw data every
day. The need to convert this raw data into useful information has
spawned considerable innovation in systems for large-scale data
analytics, especially over the last decade. Massively Parallel
Databases and MapReduce Systems addresses the design principles and
core features of systems for analyzing very large datasets using
massively-parallel computation and storage techniques on large
clusters of nodes. It first discusses how the requirements of data
analytics have evolved since the early work on parallel database
systems. It then describes some of the major technological
innovations that have each spawned a distinct category of systems
for data analytics. Each unique system category is described along
a number of dimensions including data model and query interface,
storage layer, execution engine, query optimization, scheduling,
resource management, and fault tolerance. It concludes with a
summary of present trends in large-scale data analytics. This is an
ideal reference for anyone with a research or professional interest
in large-scale data analytics.
The time is the distant future. More than 30,000 years have elapsed
since the 4the era in man's history, known as "The Post-Catastrophe
Epoch," has begun. Our sacred planet's landscape has changed
dramatically and so have the tribes of men. Mutation is widespread
amongst the animal and plant species, but also among men. The "new
world" is infested with cruelty, sorcery and magic. Power,
corruption and savagery rule, the exceptions being few The Baron
Scaramander, Overlord of evil on Earth, has made ready his massive
armies of Mongolon anthropoids, the Phalanxes of the savage female
Mermedons, the mutant throng, the beastly hordes and the thousands
of Devil Riders. The evil host will soon pour out of the Dark
Lands, pouncing upon the unsuspecting world of man, intending on
enslaving it forever. But veiled from the rest of the world, on
their mystic isles, the Warriors of Assassin are aware of the plans
of evil. For thousands of years the Assassin Masters have been
preparing for the epic "Wars of End," as foretold by Seers and
Prophets. Strengthened by the intake of "Xhnus-sah," the "Sacred
Brew," (a life extending and vision-enhancing drag), these virtuous
Warriors of Light and protectors of "The Way," are the only power
on Earth capable of resisting the forces of Darkness. Their leader
Alexander Fabius Han Yakatu, the Immortal Assassin Master, is an
enlightened man whose physical and spiritual abilities are
unsurpassed by any other. The Master knows that a Messiah-warrior,
bearer of "The Sword of Fire," will descend from The One Absolute,
yet be born of Earth. The Avatara man-god will be the only one
capable of uniting the forces of humanity, and in league with the
Assassin Legions, of whom he will become the liege, will stand in
the way of evil. "And he shall be born 'Gorga of Arrgonn', yet he
is destined to become 'Gorga Lord of Assassin'. And the irreverent
enemies of man and God will keep scattering at the mere sound of
his name, dread and dismay seizing their spiritless bodies," so it
has been written in the Assassin Prophesies of old. When Gorga is
born in the village of Khedaras, in the "Lands of Snow," evil will
unleash its barbaric agents to murder the child. But the Immortal
Master has other plans. He will travel to the northern snow-lands
and disguised as a frail old man, will become the teacher, friend,
and protector of the child. Fourteen years later, 200 Kopt savages
will attack Gorga's village, killing every living creature in it,
murdering his father and abducting Massaala, his mother. On that
day, Gorga will turn into a merciless warrior of vengeance. And all
hell will break loose, as his hand will become the hand of death.
And one by one the murderers of his people will be cut down. In
their pursuit of the Kopts, Gorga and Yakatu will confront
Sartannah, Scaramander's Prime Sorceress, the mighty Mongolons and
the "Dark Angels," the two ruthless bodyguards and lovers of
Sartannah, Commanders of the fearsome Mermedons. Unbeknown to all
but Scaramander and Sartannah, Aakiko and Mei-Mei are in reality
two Assassin girls, who were abducted from their homeland when mere
babies, then nurtured by the Overlord of evil to be his obedient
servants. The epic adventure continues, as the Sorceress, the
remnants of her entourage, and the enslaved Massaala, leave the
Land of Kopt on board their black ship. But Gorga is determined to
follow his enemies to the end of the seas and beyond. The pursuit
will take the hero to new deadly adventures, eventually bringing
him face to face with The Scaramander. I, Nimrod Jared Cain, High
Shepherd and Rabbi, elected leader, Scribe and Keeper of the
Official Records of my tribe of 111 "Detachables" (whose fate I
have recorded in a testimony I appropriately named "The Book Of
Hope"), I have the privilege to bear witness of the high-times and
adventures of our lord and master the Messiah, Gorga Liege of
Assassin, the greatest of heroes among men.
"THE DOOR" narrates the thought voyages of a man. The hero feels an
irresistible urge to journey through the inner pathways of his
consciousness in an effort to find answers to the endless questions
that torture his mind. He firmly believes that somewhere within the
Universe exists a secret Door behind which lie the answers to all
mysteries. By finding The Door he hopes to discover his true
origins and the reasons that explain mankind's existence. The
protagonist agonises to find what lies behind the illusions of
earthly life. He struggles to lift the countless veils that
disguise a perpetually relative reality. But the answers are hard
to find, The Truth an evasive phantom, the final destination
painfully elusive. Throughout this wondrous journey our hero is
accompanied by "The Voice" a "counsellor" who persists in offering
him advice, fractions of Ancient Wisdom. This advice the pilgrim
often finds contemptible unwelcome and therefore easy to reject.
And so the search for The Door continues.
