Stimulated by Noah's Flood Hypothesis proposed by W. Ryan and W. Pitman in which a catastrophic inundation of the Pontic basin was linked to the biblical story, leading experts in Black Sea research (including oceanography, marine geology, paleoclimate, paleoenvironment, archaeology, and linguistic spread) provide overviews of their data and interpretations obtained through empirical scientific approaches. Among the contributors are many East European scientists whose work has rarely been published outside of Cyrillic. Each of the 35 papers marshals its own evidence for or against the flood hypothesis. No summary or overall resolution to the flood question is presented, but instead access is provided to a broad range of interdisciplinary information that crosses previously impenetrable language barriers so that new work in the region can proceed with the benefit of a wider frame of reference.

Since the introduction of balloon angioplasty for the relief of coronary artery stenoses and of anginal symptoms in patients with coronary artery disease by Andreas Griintzig in 1977, the field of interventional technology and treatment strategies has grown enormously. For the reduction of hemodynamically significant coronary artery stenoses balloon angioplasty is the standard and reference method with a high primary success and low complication rate. Because of the relatively high recurrence rates of 30-40% of balloon angioplasty a whole family of different angioplasty techniques has been developed since then. Among those are atherectomy devices, laser angioplasty, radiofrequency angioplasty, high and low speed rotational angioplasty and stenting of stenosed vessels. Balloon angioplasty has been extended to aortic and mitral valve stenoses, and supraventricular and ventricular tachycardias can now be treated by catherter ablation techniques. In 1989 an International Symposium on standard and newer inter ventional techniques has been held at the University of Ulm. This volume contains the essential parts and presentations of the international faculty of experts in the field. In four chapters the principles, advantages, pitfalls and future developments of coronary angiopiasty, angioplasty of peripheral arteries, balloon valvuloplasty and of catheter ablation of supraventricular and ventricular tachycardias are described in detail. This book is a comprehensive overview of electrocardiography and the major effects of current cardiac pharmacological therapy on electrocardiography. The text is based on work presented at the International Symposium on Non-invasive Cardiovascular Diagnosis and Therapy, held in May, 1987 at the University of Cologne. The theme of the book is to review, in broad clinical perspective the current state-of-the-art of electrocardiography as it pertains to standard electrocar diograms, exercise testing, ambulatory electrocardiography, electrocardiographic telemetry, and high resolution electrocardiography. Furthermore, advance , in cardiac drug therapy in relation to diuretics, beta blocking drugs, antiarrhythmic agents and thrombolytic agents are reviewed. In recent years considerable progress and new developments in diagnostic and interventional cardiology have been observed, such as balloon angioplasty of coronary artery stenoses, reperfusion techniques in acute myocardial infarction, new pacing, and cardioversion-defibrillation techniques in ventricular tachyar rhythmias. On 5-8 May, 1985, an international symposium on 'Invasive Cardio vascular Therapy' was held in Cologne, which provided a survey on the experi ment l and routine therapeutic measures presently available and practiced in cardiovascular medicine. This volume is based on the oral presentations given during the symposium. In five chapters the most important traditional and new interventional techniques are discussed by experts in the field. Chapter I contains a description of results from catheter palliation of congeni tal shunt disorders or relief of congenital pulmonary or aortic valve stenoses as well as the recent experience with surgical repair of single ventricle, Fallot's tetralogy and tricuspid atresia. Chapter II presents the surgical results of valve replacement with different valve prostheses in acquired valvular disease, the surgical management of bacte rial endocarditis, as well as the various techniques of partial transient left heart support devices and of cardiac transplantation. Die rechtzeitige Erkennung von Patienten, die durch den plotzlichen Herztod gefahrdet sind, stellt unveriindert ein zentrales Problem der Kardiologie dar. Seit Mitte des letzten Jahres stehen die Bundesrepublik Deutschland und Europa fur 12 Monate unter dem Zeichen des al ternden Menschen und damit der Gerontologie: In der Zeit vom 12. bis 17. Juli 1981 fand der Internationale Gerontologenkongress zum ersten Mal auf deutschem Boden, namlich in Hamburg, statt. Satelliten-Symposien mit gerontologischen Themen in Koln, Mun chen, Erlangen, Bremen, Amsterdam und Bratislava schlossen sich unmittelbar an. Im Herbst des Jahres 1981 erorterte das Internatio nale Institut fur soziale Gerontologie in Genfin einer Klausurtagung die gesundheitspolitischen Probleme des alteren Menschen in aller Welt. Fur April dieses Jahres hat der Prasident der Vereinigten Staa ten die Vorsitzenden der europaischen gerontologischen Gesell schaften nach Washington zur White House Conference gebeten, um dort in verschiedenen Expertengremien die Tagesordnung vor zubereiten, die im Juli 1982 auf der UNO-Weltkonferenz fur die alte re Generation in Wien behandelt werden soll.
