Sheng-Hong Chen
R6,361 Discovery Miles 63 610 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book presents recent research into developing and applying computational tools to estimate the performance and safety of hydraulic structures from the planning and construction stage to the service period. Based on the results of a close collaboration between the author and his colleagues, friends, students and field engineers, it shows how to achieve a good correlation between numerical computation and the actual in situ behavior of hydraulic structures. The book's heuristic and visualized style disseminates the philosophy and road map as well as the findings of the research. The chapters reflect the various aspects of the three typical and practical methods (the finite element method, the block element method, the composite element method) that the author has been working on and made essential contributions to since the 1980s. This book is an advanced continuation of Hydraulic Structures by the same author, published by Springer in 2015.

Fundamentals of Queueing Networks - Performance, Asymptotics, and Optimization (Hardcover, 2001 ed.): Hong Chen, David D. Yao Fundamentals of Queueing Networks - Performance, Asymptotics, and Optimization (Hardcover, 2001 ed.)
Hong Chen, David D. Yao
R2,653 Discovery Miles 26 530 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This timely and synoptic text contains the essentials of queueing networks, from the classical product-form theory to the more recent developments such as diffusion and fluid limits, stochastic comparisons, stability, dynamic scheduling, and optimization. Written by two leading experts in stochastic models and applied probability, the book is based on the authors' lecture notes accumulated over many years of teaching queueing networks. The selection of materials is well-balanced in breadth and depth, making the book an ideal graduate-level text for students in engineering, business, applied mathematics, and probability and statistics. As queueing networks have become widely used as a basic model of many physical systems in a diverse range of fields, from supply chains to communication networks, the book is also a useful reference for researchers and practitioners in industrial engineering, operations research and management, computer systems, telecommunications, and related fields.

Sheng-Hong Chen
R6,759 Discovery Miles 67 590 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book discusses in detail the planning, design, construction and management of hydraulic structures, covering dams, spillways, tunnels, cut slopes, sluices, water intake and measuring works, ship locks and lifts, as well as fish ways. Particular attention is paid to considerations concerning the environment, hydrology, geology and materials etc. in the planning and design of hydraulic projects. It also considers the type selection, profile configuration, stress/stability calibration and engineering countermeasures, flood releasing arrangements and scouring protection, operation and maintenance etc. for a variety of specific hydraulic structures. The book is primarily intended for engineers, undergraduate and graduate students in the field of civil and hydraulic engineering who are faced with the challenges of extending our understanding of hydraulic structures ranging from traditional to groundbreaking, as well as designing, constructing and managing safe, durable hydraulic structures that are economical and environmentally friendly.

Pedagogy of Life - A Tale of Names and Literacy (Hardcover, New edition): Sarah Bode Pedagogy of Life - A Tale of Names and Literacy (Hardcover, New edition)
Sarah Bode; Rosa Hong Chen
R2,608 Discovery Miles 26 080 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Pedagogy of Life takes its readers through the echoing stories of the half-century, historical Cultural Revolution of China to the literate lifeworld today. Rosa Hong Chen offers a gripping array of personal and kindred stories woven into the power of words and empathy of art through the volutes of writing and dancing for life, expressing genera of warm melancholy, weighty sensations, compulsive sobs, and refrained elation. It is for the existential history of individual lives and communal sharing that life creates a pedagogical condition of possible experiences. Life itself forms a historical and social path of human growth and maturation. In a philosophical and educational autoethnographical inquiry, the author examines the nature of literacy for those marginalized and oppressed; Chen explores how one's name and the ways in which that name is used affect a person's self-knowing and knowing of the world. This book exemplifies the idea that individuals' autobiographical stories are importantly connected to wider cultural, political, and social meaning and understanding. Pedagogy of Life echoes readers' musings, affects, relations, imagination, choice, learning, teaching, and much more, because we, each and all, have our own names, ways of uttering, writing, and dancing, and, ultimately, our own ways of living, knowing, and becoming.

R1,956 Discovery Miles 19 560 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This thesis examines the Chinese economy by focusing on three issues: convergence, total factor productivity (TFP) and industrial growth. Based on China's 28 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions (henceforth 'provinces') over 1979-2004, the analysis of convergence discovered the share of physical capital in China's output of 0.23 and convergence rate of 5.6 per cent per annum. The analysis of TFP found that TFP growth in the Eastern and Central Zones was accomplished mainly through technical progress rather than efficiency improvement, while the pattern was completely different in the least developed Western Zone. For China as a whole, TFP grew at a rate of 2.75 per cent per annum, which accounted for 30.02 per cent of its real GDP growth. And the study of industrial growth of 26 industries in 9 provinces of the Eastern Zone over 2001-2005 suggested that the dynamic externalities, such as industrial specialization, competition and industrial spillovers across provinces, played an important role in province-industrial growth. Province-specific externalities, including exports, education, local market size and transport infrastructure, spurred industrial growth.
