Daniel Gottlob Turk (1750-1813), who held the post of director of music at Halle University, was responsible for the most influential keyboard tutor of its day, the monumental Klavierschule. He also wrote these two books of practical pieces to accompany it. Progressing from the simplest two-part pieces to more complex works practising various aspects of technique, the albums provide excellent teaching material for the early grades.
124 short excerpts using a mixture of treble, alto, tenor and bass clefs and various common transpositions. The book concentrates on diatonic harmonic study (including diminished sevenths) and harmonic counterpoint in up to three parts. The exercises train students to take in many staves at once, to see where the principal melody is, to understand harmonies and modulations, to read various clefs, and transpose as necessary.
Tchaikovsky sub-titled this collection, first published in 1878, '24 easy pieces (a la Schumann)'. Like his predecessor, Tchaikovsky had the innate ability of writing for young people without writing down to them, as illustrated here with this set of charming and characteristic miniatures.

Biographical insights into two outstanding musical personalities and commentary on the vitality of the British musical scene of the period. The letters that passed, on an almost daily basis, between the composers Howard Ferguson and Gerald Finzi provide not only a fascinating commentary on the British musical scene of the period 1926-1956, but also what amounts to a unique dual-biography of two remarkable, though very different, personalities. Their lives, their loves, their enthusiasms and their prejudices are laid bare with a rare degree of candour, so that we learn not only what it was liketo be witness to an art that was enjoying an unprecedented explosion of creative vitality, but also how they came to explore and consolidate their own exceptional talents. Biographical background narratives provide links that make clear what intimate correspondents inevitably take for granted, and explanations are given for references that the passage of time has made obscure. Their lives are thus revealed in all their diversity - tragedy and comedy, achievement and frustration, justifiable pride and unreasoning prejudice playing equal parts in this absorbing tale of two outstanding musical personalities of the twentieth century.
Piano duets, whether on one piano or two, are great fun to play. Their technical demands range from the very simple to the extremely difficult; every pianist, whether amateur or professional, will always find in the vast repertoire something to suit his or her capabilities. Keyboard Duets describes the chronology of the piano duet and music for two pianos, from their earliest beginnings to the present day, investigates various technical problems, and also provides a selective list of original duets with genuine musical or historical interest.
This standard work is an introduction to the interpretation of
keyboard music from the fourteenth to the nineteenth century. Dr
Ferguson provides information about the instruments themselves, and
discusses this vast, fascinating, and ever-changing subject under
the headings: musical types and forms, tempo, phrasing and
articulation, fingering, rhythmic conventions, the tones' or modes,
ornamentation, pianists' problems, and editors' problems.
