National and global security can be assessed in many ways but one
underlying factor for all humanity is access to reliable sources of
water for drinking, sanitation, food production and manufacturing
industry. In many parts of the world, population growth and an
escalating demand for water already threaten the sustainable
management of available water supplies. Global warming, climate
change and rising sea level are expected to intensify the resource
sustainability issue in many water-stressed regions of the world by
reducing the annual supply of renewable fresh water and promoting
the intrusion of saline water into aquifers along sea coasts, where
50% of the global population reside. Pro-active resource management
decisions are required, but such efforts would be futile unless
reliable predictions can be made about the impact of the changing
global conditions on the water cycle and the quality and
availability of critical water reserves. Addressing this wide
spectrum of issues, a team of expert authors discusses here the
impacts of climate change on the global water resources, the
long-term resource management goals at global and local scales, the
data requirements and the scientific and technical advances
necessary to mitigate the associated impacts.
Essays on the brief but tumultuous reign of Harold II, and one of
our most important sources of knowledge of the time - the Bayeux
Tapestry. Harold II is chiefly remembered today, perhaps unfairly,
for the brevity of his reign and his death at the Battle of
Hastings. The papers collected here seek to shed new light on the
man and his milieu before and after that climax. They explore the
long career and the dynastic network behind Harold Godwinesson's
accession on the death of King Edward the Confessor in January
1066, looking in particular at the important questions as to
whether Harold's kingship was opportunist or long-planned; a
usurpation or a legitimate succession in terms of his
Anglo-Scandinavian kinships? They also examine the posthumous
legends that Harold survived Hastings and lived on as a religious
recluse. The essays in the second part of the volume focus on the
Bayeux Tapestry, bringing out the small details which would have
resonated significantly for contemporary audiences, both Norman and
English, to suggest how they judged Harold and the other players in
the succession drama of 1066. Other aspects of the Tapestry are
also covered: the possible patron and locations the Tapestry was
produced for; where and how it was designed; and the various
sources - artistic and real - employed by the artist. Contributors:

Blackmail, sexual harassment, murder . . . and a missing dog:
eccentric, eco-obsessed LA private eye Charlie Waldo is on the case
in this quirky, fast-paced mystery. Paying a harsh self-imposed
penance for a terrible misstep on a case, former LAPD superstar
detective Charlie Waldo lives a life of punishing minimalism deep
within the woods, making a near religion of his commitment to
owning no more than One Hundred Things. At least, he's trying to.
His PI girlfriend Lorena keeps drawing him back to civilization -
even though every time he compromises on his principles, something
goes wrong. And unfortunately for Waldo, all roads lead straight
back to LA. When old adversary Don Q strongarms him into
investigating the seemingly mundane death of a vagrant, Lorena
agrees he can work under her PI license on one condition: he help
with a high-maintenance celebrity client, wildly popular courtroom
TV star Judge Ida Mudge, whose new mega-deal makes her a perfect
target for blackmail. Reopening the coldest of cases, a decades-old
fraternity death, Waldo begins to wonder if the judge is, in fact,
a murderer - and if he'll stay alive long enough to find out. Pay
or Play is the third in the Charlie Waldo series, following Last
Looks and Below the Line. Last Looks was turned into a major motion
picture, starring Charlie Hunnam as the offbeat private
investigator.
This book brings together an extraordinary wealth of experience and
will be an eye-opener for many readers. It seeks to provide an
introduction to the history of major social movements - including
Occupy and the Global Justice Movement, major green campaigns,
peace and anti-war resistance and feminist and LGBT struggles -
over the last 70 years, and to signpost contemporary developments
in these movements. It provides brief background summaries and a
range of references from movement periodicals and websites,
scholarly journals, and books by activists as well as academic
studies. It focuses on social movements of all kinds, with emphasis
on nonviolent action and protest, it includes material on
conventional political action and legal action, and literature
providing some general historical and theoretical background.

The bilingual, illustrated, and National Book Award-winning edition
of Charles Baudelaire’s masterpiece. The complete French text is
accompanied with an English translation by Richard Howard. Charles
Baudelaire’s 1857 masterwork was scandalous in its day for its
portrayals of sex, same-sex love, death, the corrupting and
oppressive power of the modern city and lost innocence, Les Fleurs
Du Mal (The Flowers of Evil) remains powerful and relevant for our
time. In “Spleen et idéal,” Baudelaire dramatizes the erotic
cycle of ecstacy and anguish—of sexual and romantic love.
“Tableaux Parisiens” condemns the crushing effects of urban
planning on a city’s soul and praises the city’s anti-heroes
including the deranged and derelict. “Le Vin” centers on the
search for oblivion in drink and drugs. The many kinds of love that
lie outside traditional morality is the focus of “Fleurs du
Mal” while rebellion is at the heart of “Révolte.” The voice
of Baudelaire lives in this award-winning edition that includes
monotypes by artist, Michael Mazur. “Howard’s achievement is
such that we can be confident that this Fleurs du Mal will long
stand as definitive, a superb guide to France’s greatest
poet.”—The Nation

This text presents an up-to-date treatment of the concepts and
techniques applied to the performance evaluation of computer
systems. Computer systems in this context include computer systems
hardware and software components, computer architecture, computer
networks, operating systems, database systems and middleware This
book covers analystic, simulation and empirically tested techniques
applied to the evaluation of systems software and the computer
systems which support them. It can be used as a reference text for
researchers and practitioners in the computer systems engineering
and performance evaluation fields or as a single or multiple
semester book on computer systems performance evaluation The
purpose of this book is to make analytic, simulation and
instrumentation based modelling and performance evaluation of
database and computer systems components possible and
understandable to a wider audience of database and computer systems
designers, developers, administrators, managers and users. The book
assumes the reader has a familiarity with concepts in computer
systems architecture, computer systems software, computer networks
and elementary mathematics including calculus and
