Two books in one volume-two first hand accounts by British
subalterns in contrasting theatres of the Great War The first of
the books in this double volume tells of the activities of a
battery of the Royal Field Artillery-one of the many horse drawn
units of guns and gunners who fought an arduous, heroic, dangerous
and often tragic war on the Western Front during World War 1, often
trading shell for shell with the German Artillery. The words of the
author, a young artillery officer, draw the reader into the heart
of the intimate group that constituted the gun battery. The story
of him, his brother officers and their men embraces the battles of
Loos, the Ypres Salient, Messines, Third Ypres, Cambrai, Arras and
finally the breakthrough of the allied armies at the Hindenburg
Line which heralded the end of the war in 1918. In the second book
we learn about the largely unreported contribution the British made
towards the Italian war effort. As a member of one of ten batteries
of artillery sent to Italy in 1917, the author served in the
campaign in the Alps including the actions at Isonzo, Piave and the
retreat from Caporetto. Present on the Italian front until the rout
of the Austrians in the Veneto and final victory, he provides rare
information about the British at war on this 'sideshow' front,
valuable details about guns and battery life and an insight into
the personalities and activities of his Italian allies With the
Guns brings the campaigns of the field gunners back to life for
modern readers.

This textbook includes material on the general survey on the theory
of taxation, other forms of public revenue, public expenditure and
public debts. There are chapters on modern theories of budgetary
policy and the controversial cheap money policy, pursued by the
author when he was in charge of the British Treasury from
1945-1947.
Divided into four parts, this text is structured as follows. Part
One examines the extent to which the inequality of incomes is
guided by ethical principles, Part Two illustrates the growth of
the theory of distribution in the hands of successive generations
of economists, Part Three develops the theory on the subject of the
division of income between categories, and Part Four looks at the
division of income between people and the causes of that
inequality, paying particular attention to the factor of inherited
wealth.
Hugh Dalton was a British Labour Party economist and politician,
who served as Chancellor of the Exchequer from 1945 to 1947 under
Clement Atlee. After surviving the First World War, he was drawn in
to active politics with the belief that, rightly handled, it could
put an end to war. This title, originally published in 1928, is
based on his journeys of political observation in Europe, where he
examined the new conditions created by the war and subsequent
events. He outlines some central problems and some provisional
solutions.
First published in 1935, Practical Socialism for Britain presents
an assessment of the Labour government's policy options and
aggressively advocates for socialism Britain's panacea. Citing
apathy and panic-mongering as the greatest enemies of the Labour
Party, the author asserts that the Labour Party can restore meaning
and sincerity to politics by bringing about tangible development
and eliminating the militarisation of politics. He also exhorts the
Crown and the civil services to be politically neutral and pledge
allegiance to the Constitution. Strictly anti-fascist and
anti-communist, this book will be of interest to students of
history, political science, and government.

In paying tribute to one of the twentieth century's most eminent
economists, the essays in this volume also cover major areas of
economic importance such as: Theories of population; relations
between banking and the State; productivity and the theory of
wages; capital and income; the development of money. Contributors
to the volume include: W. Beveridge, H. Dalton, T. E. Gregory, L.
Robbins, M. C. Buer, E. L. Hargreaves, E. M. Burns, F. C. Benham,
W. A. Robson and D. Mitrany.
