With the release of the new NEC (formerly the New Engineering
Contract), the use of the family of contracts continues to grow
worldwide, as does the importance of understanding its clauses and
nuances to everyone working in the built environment. Now in its
fourth edition, this set of contracts is different to others in
concept as well as format, so users may well find themselves
needing a helping hand along the way. Written in plain English,
Understanding NEC4: Term Service Contract offers a practical guide
to the use and management of the NEC4 Term Service Contract (TSC).
The authors describe the full life of a contract, from the initial
selection of options and contract formation through to the
operations period and ultimately termination and dispute
resolution. Although born of the same stable as the NEC4
construction contracts, the TSC is aimed at maintaining
infrastructure and differs significantly from its siblings. This is
the first book to be written on the new contract and takes the
reader through the important provisions including communications,
planning, early warnings, compensation events and payments. It is
ideal for clients, contractors and their advisors describing how to
deploy the contract successfully.
This definitive description and analysis of the Japanese main bank
system describes a form of relationship banking of significant
theoretical and policy interest. As well as being important in its
own right, the system also has relevance for developing market
economies and transforming socialist economies; the extent of this
relevance is another aspect of this thorough empirical and
theoretical analysis based on both Japanese and non-Japanese
expertise. The basic characteristics of the main bank system are
examined here - its roots, development, and role in the heyday of
Japan's post-war rapid growth - and its performance, strengths, and
weaknesses are observed. The volume goes on to examine how the
system has changed and what its appropriate role is as
deregulation, liberalization, and internationalization of Japan's
financial markets have proceeded over the past two decades and a
new issue securities market has blossomed. One conclusion that
emerges is that banking-based systems are in most cases the most
appropriate for industrial financing until a rather late stage of a
country's economic and financial development. The volume aims to
identify the conditions under which banks are better able than
securities market institutions to evaluate the creditworthiness of
borrowers and the viability of new projects, to monitor the ongoing
performance of firms, and to rescue or liquidate firms in distress.
This is the result of a major Economic Development Institute of the
World Bank research project, in cooperation with the Center for
Economic Policy at Stanford University and the Center on Japanese
Economy and Business at Columbia University, that brought together
some of the best scholars inthe field, and will be of interest to
Japan specialists and those with a general interest in systems of
finance.

Presents case studies of how North American, Asian, and Oceanic
governments have intervened to help ailing industries, and the
impact their actions have had on the industry, the country's
economy, and the growth of free trade. The primary goal is to find
alternatives to knee-jerk import controls. I
This volume connects the evolving modern financial systems of
China, Japan, and Korea to the development and growth of their
economies through the first decade of the twenty-first century. It
also identifies the commonalities among all three systems while
accounting for their social, political, and institutional
differences. Essays consider the reforms of the Chinese economy
since 1978, the underwhelming performance of the Japanese economy
since about 1990, and the growth of the Korean economy over the
past three decades. These economies engaged in rapid catch-up
growth processes and share similar economic structures. Yet while
domestic forces have driven each country's financial trajectory,
international short-term financial flows have presented
opportunities and challenges for them all. The nature and role of
the financial system in generating real economic growth, though
nuanced and complex, is integral to these countries. The result is
a fascinating spectrum of experiences with powerful takeaways.
Set against the backdrop of the author's journey with advanced
pancreatic cancer, this book offers an incisive theological
investigation into the problem of suffering that is both poignant
and personal. The author critiques the false disjunctions of
modernity, which undergird the exploitation of humans, animals and
the environment. Recognising the need for a unified spiritual and
moral foundation, he focuses attention on the Cosmic Christ, who
upholds all creation in his Love. What emerges is a vision of moral
transformation that invites us to affirm the value and dignity of
all creatures and conform to God's pattern of agapeic Love.
Tailee the Talking Salmon is the exciting story of a salmon's
adventures around the southern and western coasts of Ireland. A
Middle Reader fantasy novel, Tailee grows a youngster's interest in
international themes such as nature's wonders, pollution and shows
how people from very different worlds can work in unison. While the
specific tale is set in Ireland and inspired by a story in Fairy
Legends (1822), this story is personality driven and not
ethnocentric. It is a tale of courage, friendship and discovery, as
a dapper Tailee wins the cooperation of Red, an old sailor and
fisherman while escaping the clutches of angry villagers, works
with Lefty, a skeletal sailor who had drowned at sea, plus merboys
and enchanting mermaids on their rocky shores. Their mission is to
end the reign of Cu Mara, an evil merman who enslaved skeletal
sailors to do work so horrible for old salts it cannot be mentioned
here. In the process Tailee and Lefty face the underwater world of
kelp, pollution and predators, the mermen's cave under the Cliffs
of Moher, and visit the mermaid's in their grotto beneath the
oceans. The merman's red scullcap comes in handy when Tailee and
Lefty must grow a body to go ashore, and the mermaid's silvery cap
allows them to sing above the waters on rocky island shores, and
helps when they must entice Cu Mara onto Inis Oirr where he
discovers his miserable fate.
