Discover the Good Life as you learn from the wise voices of the
past. We've lost ourselves. Disconnected from the past and
uncertain about the future, we are anxious about what our lives
will be and troubled by a nagging sense of meaninglessness. Adrift
in the world, many Christians have their identity completely
wrapped up in work, and their definition of the "good life" is
financial success. Fewer of are staying committed to the Christian
faith, finding it difficult to reconcile their experience with
their longings and desires. With so much uncertainty, where can we
find a true vision of "the Good Life"? Learning the Good Life
speaks to this malaise with a curated collection of voices from the
past, inviting Christians into an ages-old dialogue with some of
history's wisest and most reflective minds. Featuring
thought-provoking writings from a diverse lineup of over 35 writers
and thinkers: From the classic-including Confucius, Augustine, Sor
Juana Ines de la Cruz, Henry David Thoreau, and Frederick Douglass;
To the modern-including W.E.B. DuBois, Flannery O'Connor, T.S.
Eliot, and Simone Weil; To the contemporary-including Wendell
Berry, David Foster Wallace, and Marilynne Robinson. Together these
sages, writers, philosophers, and poets address important issues
such as virtue, beauty, community, wonder, suffering, and meaning.
Each of these texts are introduced by experts from a variety of
Christian colleges and universities to help provide a richer
narrative in which Christians can participate. Each text is also
accompanied by discussion questions to provoke further thought and
contemplation and to facilitate discussion when used in groups.
Learning the Good Life is ideal for any Christian seeking a deeper
connection to the wisdom of the past and wanting a more cohesive
vision of the good life. Though not all these writers were
themselves Christians, they all have a message for you. All of them
are calling you to die to yourself, to your habits of indulgence,
to your pride and ambition-and to dedicate your time to learning,
thinking, and loving.
Smith's Elements of Soil Mechanics The revised 10th edition of the
core textbook on soil mechanics The revised and updated edition of
Smith's Elements of Soil Mechanics continues to offer a core
undergraduate textbook on soil mechanics. The author, a noted
expert in geotechnical engineering, reviews all aspects of soil
mechanics and provides a detailed explanation of how to use both
the current and the next versions of Eurocode 7 for geotechnical
design. Comprehensive in scope, the book includes accessible
explanations, helpful illustrations, and worked examples and covers
a wide range of topics including slope stability, retaining walls
and shallow and deep foundations. The text is updated throughout to
include additional material and more worked examples that clearly
illustrate the processes for performing testing and design to the
new European standards. In addition, the book's accessible format
provides the information needed to understand how to use the first
and second generations of Eurocode 7 for geotechnical design. The
second generation of this key design code has seen a major revision
and the author explains the new methodology well, and has provided
many worked examples to illustrate the design procedures. The new
edition also contains a new chapter on constitutive modeling in
geomechanics and updated information on the strength of soils,
highway design and laboratory and field testing. This important
text: Includes updated content throughout with a new chapter on
constitutive modeling Provides explanation on geotechnical design
to the new version of Eurocode 7 Presents enhanced information on
laboratory and field testing and the new approach to pavement
foundation design Provides learning outcomes, real-life examples,
and self-learning exercises within each chapter Offers a companion
website with downloadable video tutorials, animations, spreadsheets
and additional teaching materials Written for students of civil
engineering and geotechnical engineering, Smith's Elements of Soil
Mechanics, 10th Edition covers the fundamental changes in the ethos
of geotechnical design advocated in the Eurocode 7.
During the last 30 years our knowledge and understanding of
molecular processes has followed the development of increasingly
sophisticated tech niques for studying fast reactions. Although the
results are reported in papers and reviews, it is sometimes
difficult for those not themselves active in these fields to find
their way through the mass of published material. We hope that each
book in this series will present a clear account of the present
state of knowledge in a particular field of physical chemistry to
research workers in related fields, to research students, and for
the preparation of undergraduate and post-graduate lectures. Each
chapter describes the theoretical develop ment of one area of study
and the appropriate experimental techniques; the results presented
are chosen to illustrate the theory rather than to attempt a
comprehensive review. The first volume published in 1972 was
concerned with the reactions of small molecules and free radicals
in the gas phase. The development of flash photolysis in the 1950s
paved the way by making it possible to generate free radicals in
sufficient concentration for a spectroscopic" snapshot" to reveal
their molecular structure. Their role in kinetic systems could then
be followed directly, rather than be inferred from mechanism. The
shock tube enabled gas mixtures to be heated to any desired
temperature in a time which was shorter than subsequent chemical
reactions. Discharge-flow methods enabled the reactions of atoms
and free radicals to be studied directly."
This book brings together key, incisive writings (published and
unpublished) of the late Andre Gunder Frank on world development
and world history in a singular volume. The selections provide the
reader with a historical tracing of Gunder Frank's conceptual
thinking on development from the national liberation struggles of
the 1950s -1960s through to his views on world history, world
development and globalization in the late 20th and early 21st
centuries. The latter period witnessed his rethinking of world
development and the rejection of theoretical positions he had taken
in the 1960s and 1970s. Pertinent writings during the last phase of
his intellectual career addressing the impact of Eurocentrism on
the understanding of world development and world history, the
mythology of European exceptionalism, and the rise of Asia are
included.
The author of this book believes passionately in the National
Health Service and through his work offers the government
recommendations for how its reform process can be saved from
failure. The NHS will only survive and be true to its founding
principles if the reform programme is driven forward - and if the
book's recommendations are implemented.

This report on materials is not a sequel to the five or six
high-quality reports published in certain Community countries over
the last few years, nor does it attempt to summarize them. Nor is
it a technical summary of the state of the art in new materials. It
is rather to be seen as a survey of economic dynamics and strategy,
carried out for the purpose of prompting political and industrial
leaders throughout the European Community to reflect in some depth
on the subject of materials. The report is arranged in five parts :
the first is concerned with a definition of materials, the second
with structural materials and their influence on the reconception
of industrial processes, and this part is complemented by the
third, which looks at the three main sectors using structural
materials (transport, packaging, building and public works). The
fourth part analyzes functional materials and the way in which they
affect basic components in the technological system (information,
energy, biotechnology). The fifth and last part makes a strategic
analysis for Europe (in the spheres of industrial strategies, the
role of the authorities and developments in employment and skills).
Wood is the world’s most used structural material but its deformation and failure processes are poorly understood compared to knowledge about man-made materials like metals, concrete, ceramics, glass and plastics. Combining materials science, wood science and engineering mechanics perspectives, Fracture and Fatigue in Wood steers away from empirical experience and focuses on a mechanics-based study of deformation and failure in wood, providing a deep understanding of underlying physical processes. Fracture and Fatigue in Wood covers: - interpretation of experimental information about fracture and cyclic and static fatigue behaviour of wood;
- the latest modelling techniques and test evidence on fracture and fatigue microscopic processes;
- wood structure, ranging from molecular to gross levels, physical and mechanical properties of wood and their inherent relationship;
- models for predicting fracture and cyclic and static fatigue in wood;
- practical application of information, concepts and models of mechanical properties for fracture and fatigue in wood, components and structural systems.
This unique resource will appeal to postgraduate students in timber engineering, solid mechanics and wood science. Wood scientists, materials scientists, and structural engineering practitioners and researchers will also find it a valuable reference.
This comprehensive source on the pathogenic origins of neuropathic
pain covers the detailed molecular bases of the currently known
neuropathies as classified by their pathogenic origins. Filling a
critical need, this book fills the need for a resource on a
syndrome that demands improved understanding by clinicians and
researchers alike so that treatment options for patients are not
categorically limited to a pill or a needle. If the
clinician understands the origins of a patients' neuropathic pain,
they can work cooperatively toward improving it with tailored
therapies that don't create societal diseconomies and that
ultimately are effective in helping patients. The book presents in
detail the molecular bases of some currently known neuropathies by
their pathogenetic origins, allowing clinicians to tailor more
specific and more effective treatment regimens for their
patients. For basic researchers, this book is a general
resource to better direct research on neuropathy-specific molecular
mechanisms. The improved understanding of the pathogenesis
of neuropathic pain can then be used to develop more specific and
more effective manipulations of these pathways.
Total intravenous anaesthesia (TIVA) has long been used for
specialized surgery, but recent developments in monitoring and
delivery and the availability of the intravenous anaesthetic
protocol have opened the door to widespread application.
This new addition to the Principles and Practice series is a
straightforward introduction to TIVAA, starting with the basic
pharmokinetic and dynamic principles and moving on to an overview
of the pharmacology of the major intravenous anaesthetic drug
groups. The importance of drug interactions are stressed and there
is a discussion of the latest technology in delivery and
monitoring-such as target controlled infusions and EEG bispectral
monitoring systems.
Written by key specialists from the UK and the USA, this
practical reference will be an essential introduction for all
anaesthetic and intensive care trainees, and will enable
anaesthetists to keep up to date on the rapid expansion of TIVA in
clinical practice.
This book is an essential companion volume to "Quarantine Pests for
Europe, 2nd Edition" and "Illustrations of Quarantine Pests for
Europe." The three titles are the result of collaboration between
CABI and EPPO in the compilation of data on the pests of
phytosanitary significance for the European and Mediterranean
region. This present publication provides updated geographic
distributions of over 350 pests for which data sheets and
illustrations are already available. A map is provided for each
pest showing the current world distribution graphically. This is
supported by a list of the countries and provinces in which the
pest has been recorded with a coded indication of its current
status. Coverage extends to insects, mites, nematodes, fungi,
bacteria, viruses and parasitic plants. The pests concerned are
either entirely absent from the European and Mediterranean region
(A1 list) or have a restricted distribution (A2 list). Text within
the book is provided in both English and French.
The timeless insight of Islam's sacred writings can enrich your own
spiritual journey. For many in the West, the teachings of the
Qur’an often are enshrouded in mystery and fear. Yet Islam’s
holy book gave birth to one of the most powerful and enlightened
civilizations the world has ever seen. By the sixteenth century,
Muslim culture stretched from India to Africa to Europe, preserving
with it the ancient learning that helped spawn the Renaissance.
With its interwoven ideas of faith and reason, justice and mercy,
the path of Islam—which literally means "surrendering to God’s
will"—offers a uniquely focused and balanced approach to living
life with a profound awareness of God. With gentleness and insight,
Sohaib N. Sultan leads you through the central themes of both the
Qur’an and the collected sayings of Prophet Muhammad, known as
hadith. These teachings dispel common misconceptions about Muslim
beliefs and offer practical guidance for your own spiritual
journey, from understanding the merciful nature of God; to
cultivating peace and justice in the self, family, and society; to
answering questions about the afterlife and how to attain it. Now
you can experience the wisdom of Qur’anic teachings even if you
have no previous knowledge of Islam or Muslim writings. Insightful
yet unobtrusive facing-page commentary explains the texts for you,
allowing you to enter into the path of surrender to God.
Although they are typically portrayed by the media as dangerous
extremists in distant lands, Muslims in fact form a permanent,
peaceful and growing population in nearly every Western country.
While Westerners are now more commonly seeing mosques in their
neighborhoods or scarved Muslim women in their streets,
misperceptions and stereotypes remain. With expanding numbers and
desires to protect their rights and identities, Muslims are coming
into more and more into the public view. In Muslim Minorites in the
West noted scholars Haddad and Smith bring together outstanding
essays on the distinct experiences of minority Muslim communities
from Detroit, Michigan to Perth, Australia and the wide range of
issues facing them. Haddad and Smith in their introduction trace
the broad contours of the Muslim experience in Europe, America and
other areas of European settlement and shed light on the common
questions minority Muslims face of assimilation, discrimination,
evangelism, and politics. Muslim Minorities in the West provides a
welcome introduction to these increasingly visible citizens of
Western nations.
