Phanes (fa-nays) means "manifester" or "revealer", and is related
to the Greek words "light" and "to shine forth".
Phanes Press was founded in 1985 to publish quality books on the
spiritual, philosophical, and cosmological traditions of the
Western world. Since that time, we have published 45 books,
including five volumes of Alexandria, a book-length journal of
cosmology, philosophy, myth, and culture.
The year 2000 marks our fifteen-year anniversary, and we are
working to bring out more interdisciplinary works, including books
on creativity, psychology, literature, and the intersections
between science, spirituality, and culture.
The longest work on number symbolism to survive from the ancient
world. Contains helpful footnotes, an extensive glossary,
bibliography, & foreword by Keith Critchlow.

This translation from the Greek by Thomas Taylor (1758 1835) was
first published in 1821. Taylor's early writings and translations
into English influenced such romantic poets as Blake, Coleridge and
Keats. Iamblichus is thought to have been born in Syria in the
middle of the third century and is regarded as one of the great
Neoplatonist philosophers. He founded a school in which he taught
'white magic' or 'theurgy'; he sought to uncover the invisible side
of nature and to give Man the means to effect the union of the
divine spark with its parent-flame within him. In this work,
divided into ten sections, he gives a complete canon of pagan
religious thought and belief and explains their background. The
Neoplatonist Porphyry's Letter to Anebo, in which he criticises
religious rituals and practices, and Iamblichus' response to this
criticism, and defence of these traditions, are included.
1918. An abridged version of this scarce mystical classic
translated by Thomas Taylor.

Pythagoras of Samos was an Ionian Greek philosopher and founder of
the religious movement called Pythagoreanism. Most of our
information about Pythagoras was written down centuries after he
lived, thus very little reliable information is known about him. He
was born on the island of Samos, and may have travelled widely in
his youth, visiting Egypt and other places seeking knowledge.
Around 530 BC, he moved to Croton, a Greek colony in southern
Italy, and there set up a religious sect. His followers pursued the
religious rites and practices developed by Pythagoras, and studied
his philosophical theories. The society took an active role in the
politics of Croton, but this eventually led to their downfall. The
Pythagorean meeting-places were burned, and Pythagoras was forced
to flee the city. He is said to have ended his days in Metapontum.
