The British Official Film in South-East Asia - Malaya/Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): Ian Aitken The British Official Film in South-East Asia - Malaya/Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Ian Aitken
R3,757 Discovery Miles 37 570 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book explores the ways in which the British official film was used in Malaya/Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong from 1945 to the 1970s. Aitken uncovers how the British official film, and British official information agencies, adapted to the epochal contexts of the Cold War and end of empire. In addition to an extensive introduction, which touches on a number of critical issues related to the post-war British official film, the book provides an account of how the tradition of film-making associated with the British documentary film movement spread into the region during the post-war period, and how that tradition was contested by a 'Colonial Office' tradition of film-making. The volume concludes by covering the rise of television in the region within the context of developing post-colonial authoritarian states in Singapore and Malaysia, and the continuation of colonial authoritarianism in Hong Kong.

Ian Aitken
R406 Discovery Miles 4 060 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In 1920, Richard Jones, a former British army major, begins a new life running a vineyard with his family in southern France. However, as the years pass, the clouds of conflict gather and the idyll is shattered by the outbreak of World War Two. Following the German occupation of France, Richard receives an intriguing letter, which sets in motion a chain of events involving the secret Special Operations Executive (SOE) and the fight for freedom. After undergoing training in England, Richard returns to France and establishes an SOE circuit to work with the local resistance in planning and carrying out acts of sabotage and subversion. For the people he recruits and those who join the fight to free France from Nazi control, the dangers are constant and the risks are high. Being behind the enemy line means these SOE men and women are frequently mixing with the enemy. In turn it means the German forces are constantly on the lookout for the SOE agents in their midst. These young people show acts of bravery and courage usually expected in people twice their age. Many will pay the ultimate price. Yet amid the turmoil and suffering of war, the brave actions of these men and women provide hope and help pave the way to victory. Theirs is a story characterised by courage, camaraderie and the resilience of the human spirit. This lively novel gives a fascinating insight into the SOE and highlights the heroism of its agents and all who worked with them.

Hong Kong Documentary Film (Hardcover): Ian Aitken, Michael Ingham Hong Kong Documentary Film (Hardcover)
Ian Aitken, Michael Ingham
R2,576 Discovery Miles 25 760 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This is a comprehensive study of the lost genre of Hong Kong documentary film. Does Hong Kong have a significant tradition in documentary filmmaking? Until recently, many film scholars believed not. Yet, when Ian Aitken and Michael Ingham challenged this assumption, they discovered a rich cinematic tradition, dating back to the 1890s. Under-researched and often forgotten, documentary film-making in Hong Kong includes a thriving independent documentary film movement, a large archive of documentaries made by the colonial film units, and a number of classic British Official Films. Case studies from all three categories are examined in this book, including The Battle of Shanghai, The Sea and the Sky, Rising Sun and The Hong Kong Case. In-depth discussion and analysis of more recent Hong Kong independent documentaries focuses on works such as Cheung King-wai's KJ: A Life in Music and films by Tammy Cheung and Evans Chan. With a particular focus on how these films address the historico-political dimension of their time, Hong Kong Documentary Film introduces students and scholars in Film Studies to this fascinating and largely unexplored cinematic tradition. It is based on original archival research. It explores the issue of colonial film-making. It explores the role of public service television documentary. It presents critical analysis of important films.

European Film Theory and Cinema - A Critical Introduction (Paperback): Ian Aitken European Film Theory and Cinema - A Critical Introduction (Paperback)
Ian Aitken
R819 Discovery Miles 8 190 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

European Film Theory and Cinema explores the major film theories and movements within European cinema since the early 1900s. An original and critically astute study, it considers film theory within the context of the intellectual climate of the last two centuries. Ian Aitkin focuses particularly on the two major traditions that dominate European film theory and cinema: the "intuitionist modernist and realist" tradition and the "post-Saussurian" tradition. The first originates in a philosophical lineage that encompasses German idealist philosophy, romanticism, phenomenology, and the Frankfurt School. Early intuitionist modernist film culture and later theories and practices of cinematic realism are shown to be part of one continuous tradition. The post-Saussurian tradition includes semiotics, structuralism, and post-structuralism.

LukaCsian Film Theory and Cinema - A Study of Georg LukaCs' Writing on Film 1913-1971 (Hardcover, New): Ian Aitken LukaCsian Film Theory and Cinema - A Study of Georg LukaCs' Writing on Film 1913-1971 (Hardcover, New)
Ian Aitken
R2,430 Discovery Miles 24 300 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Lukacsian Film Theory and Cinema explores Georg Lukacs' writings on film. The Hungarian Marxist critic Georg Lukacs is primarily known as a literary theorist, but he also wrote extensively on the cinema. These writings have remained little known in the English-speaking world because the great majority of them have never actually been translated into English - until now. Aitken has gathered together the most important essays and the translations appear here, often for the first time. This book thus makes a decisive contribution to understandings of Lukacs within the field of film studies, and, in doing so, also challenges many existing preconceptions concerning his theoretical position. For example, whilst Lukacs' literary theory is well known for its repudiation of naturalism, in his writings on film Lukacs appears to advance a theory and practice of film that can best be described as naturalist. Lukacsian film theory and cinema is divided into two parts. In part one, Lukacs' writings on film are explored, and placed within relevant historical and intellectual contexts, whilst part two consists of the essays themselves. This book will be of considerable interest to scholars and students working within the fields of film studies, literary studies, intellectual history, media and cultural studies. It is also intended to be the final volume in a trilogy of works on cinematic realism, which includes the author's earlier European Film Theory and Cinema (2001), and Realist Film Theory and Cinema (2006).
