The Designers Republicâ„¢ is the design group that changed design.
But there’s never been a book that tells its story - until now.
Led by founder and born rebel, Ian Anderson, The Designers
Republicâ„¢ has shaped graphic communication over the past thirty
years through rule-defying music work, provocative self-initiated
projects and a fierce commitment to conceptual thinking over style.
Now, for the first time in book form, Anderson explores the
studio’s output, and its influence on a generation of graphic
designers. AZTDR™ spans over three decades of work – from the
studio’s earliest designs for the FON label in the mid-1980s and
sleeves for Age of Chance, Chakk and Cabaret Voltaire, right up to
its recent projects for The Cinematic Orchestra, Led Bib and the
Gulbenkian Foundation. Alongside classic self-initiated TDRâ„¢
projects, the 512-page book features an A to Z of everything from
campaigns for Evolution Print, Coca-Cola and Nike, through to the
studio’s celebrated designs for video games such as Wipeout and
Formula Fusion. TDR™’s special relationship with print is
explored through its celebrated contributions to IDEA and Emigre
magazines and its 3D>2D book, alongside its work for Manchester
School of Art, Gatecrasher, NY Sushi and the studio’s array of
music clients. Here, TDR™’s work with Autechre is examined via
ten key releases, while the studio’s involvement with Pop Will
Eat Itself focuses on some twenty-eight different singles and
albums. There are also expansive sections devoted to TDR™’s
designs for Aphex Twin, Moloko, Sun Electric and The Orb, alongside
sleeve designs for R&S Records, New Atlantis, a range of
Berlin-based labels and, of course, Warp Records.
Spices have been highly valued since at least the Bronze Age, with
the so-called Spice Trade, spanning Asia to the Mediterranean,
developing from the late centuries BC. By the first century AD,
Roman society spent vast sums fuelling their demand for spices,
importing black pepper from India and other exotics from further
afield. Importing spices from the east was a daunting and dangerous
task, whether by ship across the Indian Ocean, a perilous round
journey of many months, or by caravan overland along the myriad
routings of the Silk Road, or other trade routes. The search for
spices in the 15th and 16th centuries led to Columbus' discovery of
America (and the discovery of chilli in Cuba and Hispaniola); Vasco
da Gama's proving of the route to India around the coast of Africa;
and Magellan's discovery of the western route to the Spice Islands.
This comprehensive book both reviews spices and their histories of
uses, botanical descriptions and classifications, as well as
delving into the trade routes and importance of spice through
history in driving global events.
Originally formed by singer-songwriter Ian Anderson in psychedelic
1968, the band Hethro Tull has been recording its own kind of rock
and roll and touring the globe for more than three decades. This is
a history of the band through the present, written by a personal
acquaintance of several of its members. The book includes a
chronology of all of the band's recordings and information on all
accompanying tours, with the author's critiques as well as the
band's own reminiscences and opinions of each album. Also included
are previously unpublished interviews with founder Ian Anderson
long-time band member David Pegg, Mick Abrahams, Jeffrey Hammond,
and Doane Perry, and other band members.
The book provides an overview of the whole field of depressive
disorders by two recognised experts.
Written by well known authors, one European and one from USA
this pocket-sized book covers the whole field including a practical
guide of use in the clinic.
Discrete mathematics has now established its place in most undergraduate mathematics courses. This textbook provides a concise, readable and accessible introduction to a number of topics in this area, such as enumeration, graph theory, Latin squares and designs. It is aimed at second-year undergraduate mathematics students, and provides them with many of the basic techniques, ideas and results. It contains many worked examples, and each chapter ends with a large number of exercises, with hints or solutions provided for most of them. As well as including standard topics such as binomial coefficients, recurrence, the inclusion-exclusion principle, trees, Hamiltonian and Eulerian graphs, Latin squares and finite projective planes, the text also includes material on the ménage problem, magic squares, Catalan and Stirling numbers, and tournament schedules.
The British Combinatorial Conference is an established biennial
international gathering. This volume contains the invited papers
presented, by several distinguished mathematicians, at the 1985
conference. The papers cover a broad range of combinatorial topics,
including cryptography, greedy algorithms, graph minors, flows
through random networks, (0, 1)-distance problems, irregularities
of point distributions and reconstruction of infinite graphs.
The mathematics of tournament design are surprisingly subtle, and
this book, an extensively revised version of Ellis Horwood's
popular Combinatorial Designs: Construction Methods, provides a
thorough introduction. It includes a new chapter on league
schedules, which discusses round robin tournaments, venue
sequences, and carry-over effects. It also discusses balanced
tournament designs, double schedules, and bridge and whist
tournament design. Readable and authoritative, the book emphasizes
throughout the historical development of the material and includes
numerous examples and exercises giving detailed constructions.

The spirit and aim of this book is to present a compact
introduction to the basic combinatorial tools - such as recurrence
relations, generating functions, incidence matrices, and the
inclusion-exclusion principle - that will give the reader a flavour
of the distinctive characteristics of this attractive and
increasingly important branch of mathematics. A studly of block
designs is followed by a brief mention of applications to coding
theory. In this new edition, Steiner triple systems are constructed
and S(5,8,24) is obtained via the Golay code of length 24. The
final chapter combines together the three combinatorial structures
of the Leech lattice, the Golay codes, and Steiner systems. Also in
this edition, an application of the marriage theorem to score
sequences of tournaments has been included.
There are probably few concepts less understood, more cursed and
blamed for everything imaginable, and yet perhaps result in so many
outstanding developments as globalisation. Globalisation is the
process of denationalisation of markets, politics and legal
systems, (ie: the rise of the so-called global economy). The
consequences of this political and economic restructuring on local
economies, human welfare and environment are the subject of
vigorous debate among businesses of all sizes, various
international organisations, governmental institutions and the
academic world. This book presents current research in the field of
globalisation.
Love of dogs, rainy days, autumn, Christmas and spiritual
reflections are creatively and sometimes dreamily captured in this
selection of poems and two short stories written during during the
lifetime of the author. Poems range from youthful rhymes of his
teens to the spiritual insights that dominated the writings in his
later years.
For those interested in starting their own label, Here Come the
Regulars will be the dog-eared, underlined bible on the night
stand. Ian Anderson started recording music when he was 13 and
launched his own successful record label, Afternoon Records, when
he was just 18. Now this wunderkind of the music scene has written
the ultimate guide for all those aspiring to a career in the record
industry. His advice ranges from creating a label's image to
managing its budget and pays particular attention to blogging
culture and being in the now'.'
Coherent treatment provides comprehensive view of basic methods and results of the combinatorial study of finite set systems. The Clements-Lindstrom extension of the Kruskal-Katona theorem to multisets is explored, as is the Greene-Kleitman result concerning k-saturated chain partitions of general partially ordered sets. Connections with Dilworth's theorem, the marriage problem, and probability are also discussed. Each chapter ends with a helpful series of exercises and outline solutions appear at the end. "An excellent text for a topics course in discrete mathematics."--Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society.
