The Creation of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons - A Case Study in the Birth of an Intergovernmental... The Creation of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons - A Case Study in the Birth of an Intergovernmental Organisation (Hardcover)
Ian R. Kenyon, Daniel Feakes
R1,448 Discovery Miles 14 480 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book is the first comprehensive study of the creation and work of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). It summarises the history of the development and use of chemical weapons. The authors describe the negotiation of the Chemical Weapons Convention and the work of the Preparatory Commission for OPCW. They review the first ten years of operation of the Treaty and the organisation. The book describes how the abstract concepts contained in the Treaty were translated into an operational international organisation, able to send inspectors to military and civil chemical facilities around the world. It offers a detailed example of international multilateral diplomacy in action and provides a detailed case study of how a convention negotiated by diplomats is put into effect by a broad range of government officials and private actors. Last but not least, lessons are drawn for the creation of other treaty based organisations. As such, the book is of great interest to academic libraries and students of International Relations, as well as government officials, legal scholars and experts involved in the implementation of international treaties. The publication of this book coincides with the 10th anniversary of the Treaty entering into force. Ian R. Kenyon was Executive Secretary to the Preparatory Commission for the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (1993-1997). He is currently active as a Visiting Fellow at SPRU Science and Technology Research, University of Sussex and a Visiting Senior Research Fellow at the Mountbatten Centre for International Studies, University of Southampton. Daniel Feakes was the Harvard Sussex Program Researcher at OPCW (1997-2000). He is currently a Research Fellow at SPRU Science and Technology Research, University of Sussex.

R1,098 Discovery Miles 10 980 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This collection of papers rigorously examines the current place of deterrence in international security relations, delivering the best of contemporary thinking. This is a special issue of the leading journal Contemporary Security Policy. It shows how and why nuclear deterrence was the central organizing mechanism for international security relations in the second half of the twentieth century. It has been replaced by a new global security environment in which the central role of deterrence, both nuclear and otherwise, appears to have diminished. The Cold War has been succeeded by a new state of play. This book will be of interest to students of military and naval history and security studies.

Quantum 20/20 - Fundamentals, Entanglement, Gauge Fields, Condensates and Topology (Paperback): Ian R. Kenyon Quantum 20/20 - Fundamentals, Entanglement, Gauge Fields, Condensates and Topology (Paperback)
Ian R. Kenyon
R1,432 Discovery Miles 14 320 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book aims to provide support for lecture courses on general quantum physics for university undergraduates in the final year(s) of a physics degree programme. The first chapter reviews the basic quantum mechanics needed for getting the best out of the text. Instructors are then free to concentrate on a group of chapters, or select components from all chapters, whichever suits their needs. The text covers key themes of quantum physics, taking the perspective achieved after more than a century of research, and emphasizes the effectiveness and the subtlety of quantum concepts in explaining diverse physical phenomena. The book helps bring out these unifying ideas and illustrates them with important examples from modern experiments and applications. The book maintains a level of presentation accessible to undergraduates, and provides exercises and solutions to reinforce the learning process. Solutions to the exercises are available via the OUP webpage link for the book.
