Drawing together distinguished international scholars, this volume
offers a unique insight into the social and cultural hybridity of
the Uyghurs. It bridges a gap in our understanding of this group,
an officially recognized minority mainly inhabiting the Xinjiang
Uyghur Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China, with
significant populations also living in the Central Asian states.
The volume is comparative and interdisciplinary in focus:
historical chapters explore the deeper problems of Uyghur identity
which underpin the contemporary political situation; and
sociological and anthropological comparisons of a range of
practices from music culture to life-cycle rituals illustrate the
dual, fused nature of contemporary Uyghur social and cultural
identities. Contributions by 'local' Uyghur authors working within
Xinjiang also demonstrate the possibilities for Uyghur advocacy in
social and cultural policy-making, even within the current
political climate.

With fresh and provocative insights into the everyday reality of
politics in post-Soviet Central Asia, this volume moves beyond
commonplaces about strong and weak states to ask critical questions
about how democracy, authority, and justice are understood in this
important region. In conversation with current theories of state
power, the contributions draw on extensive ethnographic research in
settings that range from the local to the transnational, the
mundane to the spectacular, to provide a unique perspective on how
politics is performed in everyday life.
Examines contemporary identities in a region of Turkey's eastern
Black Sea coast. Based on fieldwork carried out between 1983 and
1999, this is an exploration of contemporary social identities in a
little-known region of Turkey's eastern Black Sea coast abutting
the border with the Republic of Georgia. Regional developments have
included the promotion of tea as a cash crop, disappointments in
this market, and the opening of a border crossing to Georgia
shortly before the collapse of the Soviet Union. These are analysed
in the context of more general changes in Turkish civil society and
widespread doubts about the continued viability of the secular
institutions of Ataturk's republic. Series Editors: Wendy James
& N.J. Allen

Since 1949, Tibetans and Uyghurs generally have been perceived as
the two most problematic members of the PRC's great family of
peoples and been the targets of 'carrot and stick' measures
designed to facilitate their integration into the PRC. In recent
years, a solution to the problem of Xinjiang and the Tibet has been
sought in accelerated economic development, yet this is perceived
by both groups with great suspicion. Addressing this situation, the
volume explores the arenas of socio-economic development and market
liberalization, popular culture, urban planning and relocation,
environment and ecological migration, civil society, education and
language, ethno-nationalism, as well as religious policies and
practices. It is especially topical at a time when fieldwork in the
regions where these two minorities live remains extremely difficult
and politically sensitive.
