This volume includes a selection of papers presented at the 2015 and 2016 conferences held at Western University that provide an interdisciplinary outlook on modern applied mathematics that draws from theory and practice, and situates it in proper context. These papers come from leading mathematicians, computational scientists, and philosophers of science, and cover a broad collection of mathematical and philosophical topics, including numerical analysis and its underlying philosophy, computer algebra, reliability and uncertainty quantification, computation and complexity theory, combinatorics, error analysis, perturbation theory, experimental mathematics, scientific epistemology, and foundations of mathematics. By bringing together contributions from researchers who approach the mathematical sciences from different perspectives, the volume will further readers' understanding of the multifaceted role of mathematics in modern science, informed by the state of the art in mathematics, scientific computing, and current modeling techniques.

This volume, as Andrew M. Odlzyko writes in the foreword, "commemorates and celebrates the life and achievements of an extraordinary person." Originally conceived as an 80th birthday tribute to Herbert Wilf, the well-known combinatorialist, the book has evolved beyond the proceeds of the W80 tribute. Professor Wilf was an award-winning teacher, who was supportive of women mathematicians, and who had an unusually high proportion of women among his PhD candidates. He was Editor-in-chief of the American Mathematical Monthly and a founder of both the Journal of Algorithms and of the Electronic Journal of Combinatorics. But he was first a researcher, driven by his desire to know and explain the inner workings of the mathematical world. The book collects high-quality, refereed research contributions by some of Professor Wilf's colleagues, students, and collaborators. Many of the papers presented here were featured in the Third Waterloo Workshop on Computer Algebra (WWCA 2011, W80), held May 26-29, 2011 at Wilfrid Laurier University, Waterloo, Canada. Others were included because of their relationship to his important work in combinatorics. All are presented as a tribute to Herb Wilf's contributions to mathematics and mathematical life.

It is a pleasure for me to have the opportunity to write the foreword to this volume, which is dedicated to Professor Georgy Egorychev on the occasion of his seventieth birthday. I have learned a great deal from his creative and important work, as has the whole world of mathematics. From his life's work (so far) in having made d- tinguished contributions to ?elds as diverse as the theory of permanents, Lie groups, combinatorial identities, the Jacobian conjecture, etc., let me comment on just two of the most important of his research areas. The permanent of an nxn matrix A is Per(A)= a a ...a , (1) ? 1,i 2,i n,i 1 2 n extended over the n! permutations{i ,...,i} of{1,2,...,n}. Thus, the permanent 1 n is "like the determinant except for dropping the sign factors from the terms." H- ever by dropping those signs, one loses almost all of the friendly characteristics of determinants, such as the fact that det(AB)= det(A)det(B), the invariance under elementary row and column operations, and so forth. The permanent is a creature of multilinear algebra, rather than of linear algebra, and is much crankier to deal with in virtually all of its aspects, both theoretical and algorithmic.

R1,623 Discovery Miles 16 230 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book covers algorithm portfolios, multi-method schemes that harness optimization algorithms into a joint framework to solve optimization problems. It is expected to be a primary reference point for researchers and doctoral students in relevant domains that seek a quick exposure to the field. The presentation focuses primarily on the applicability of the methods and the non-expert reader will find this book useful for starting designing and implementing algorithm portfolios. The book familiarizes the reader with algorithm portfolios through current advances, applications, and open problems. Fundamental issues in building effective and efficient algorithm portfolios such as selection of constituent algorithms, allocation of computational resources, interaction between algorithms and parallelism vs. sequential implementations are discussed. Several new applications are analyzed and insights on the underlying algorithmic designs are provided. Future directions, new challenges, and open problems in the design of algorithm portfolios and applications are explored to further motivate research in this field.

The Handbook of Computational Neurodegeneration provides a comprehensive overview of the field and thus bridges the gap between standard textbooks of research on neurodegeneration and dispersed publications for specialists that have a narrowed focus on computational methods to study this complicated process. The handbook reviews the central issues and methodological approaches related to the field for which the reader pursues a thorough overview. It also conveys more advanced knowledge, thus serving both as an introductory text and as a starting point for an in-depth study of a specific area, as well as a quick reference source for the expert by reflecting the state of the art and future prospects. The book includes topics that are usually missing in standard textbooks and that are only marginally represented in the specific literature. The broad scope of this handbook is reflected by five major parts that facilitate an integration of computational concepts, methods and applications in the study of neurodegeneration. Each part is intended to stand on its own, giving an overview of the topic and the most important problems and approaches, which are supported by examples, practical applications, and proposed methodologies. The basic concepts and knowledge, standard procedures and methods are presented, as well as recent advances and new perspectives.
