Welcome to the Grammar School Pressure Cooker: How do assessment pressures affect the teaching and learning of Able, Gifted and... Welcome to the Grammar School Pressure Cooker: How do assessment pressures affect the teaching and learning of Able, Gifted and Talented students? (Hardcover)
Imran Ahmed
R611 Discovery Miles 6 110 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This study was designed to shed light an under-researched field, the pressures of working in a grammar school. The existing literature on this subject is best described as minimal. Therefore, the literature cited is often adapted or relates to the topic of general academic pressure, but not exclusively about grammar schools. Its purpose was to be used for academic and professional reference and should be viewed as a case study into a narrow and specific field. The findings of the study illustrated that Able Gifted and Talented students were largely unaffected by national examination estimates, in this instance Fischer Family Trust grades, but appeared to thrive on other pressures, such as internal aspirations. However, teachers seemed to feel stressed and pressurised by the expectations of such estimates and regarded them very negatively on the whole.

Imran Ahmed, Zahid Shahab Ahmed, Howard Brasted, Shahram Akbarzadeh
R3,890 Discovery Miles 38 900 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book sheds light on religiously motivated extremism and violence in South Asia, a phenomenon which ostensibly poses critical and unique challenges to the peace, security and governance not only of the region, but also of the world at large. The book is distinctive in-so-far as it reexamines conventional wisdom held about religious extremism in South Asia and departs from the literature which centres its analyses on Islamic militancy based on the questions and assumptions of the West's 'war on terror'. This volume also offers a comprehensive analysis of new extremist movements and how their emergence and success places existing theoretical frameworks in the study of religious extremism into question. It further examines topical issues including the study of social media and its impact on the evolution and operation of violent extremism. The book also analyses grassroots and innovative non-state initiatives aimed to counter extremist ideologies. Through case studies focusing on Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, this collection examines extremist materials, methods of political mobilisation and recruitment processes and maps the interconnected nature of sociological change with the ideological transformations of extremist movements.

Great Britain is one of the wealthiest, most successful nations in the world. Why, then, do so many people feel short-changed? The old assumption that `if you work hard and play by the rules, you can get on in life' looks increasingly like a cruel joke. Homeownership, secure employment and fair wages seem like relics of a bygone era. Meanwhile exploitative workplace practices have created a new serfdom, leaving many people trapped in unfulfilling, underpaid work. At a time of huge political upheaval and ever-increasing inequality, this powerful new book asks: how can we build a successful economy, powered by a happy and productive workforce that benefits everyone in the twenty-first century?

But soon Dare faces an army of ruthless machines, robots who have conquered the planet and placed the surviving humans in slave camps. The robots are too powerful and too numerous to be resisted, and their invasion is complete. With limited resources, Dare, Digby and Peabody face their greatest challenge yet - to liberate planet Earth. But the task becomes more desperate than ever when Dan discovers the alien force behind the robot invasion. Episode 5 - Operation Saturn by Patrick Chapman. As work begins to rebuild planet Earth after the devastation of the robot invasion, Dare and his friends in Space Fleet remain vigilant, certain that it is only a matter of time before the Mekon launches a fresh attack. When the wreck of the Nautilus - an experimental ship lost over a decade before - appears in orbit of the moon, Dare, Digby and Peabody are sent to investigate. They find the ship and its crew were destroyed by advanced alien weapons. All clues lead them to Saturn's moons. With Earth still vulnerable our heroes must journey to an unknown world - to discover who sent the Nautilus back, not realising that for once the source of their latest conflict comes from a lot closer to home. Not all would-be conquerors of planet Earth are alien. Episode 6 - Prisoners of Space by Colin Brake. After a sequence of near non-stop adventures Dare, Digby and Peabody find themselves in a strange limbo of paranoid calm. Whilst there's been no sign of the Mekon anywhere in the solar system, Dare is certain Earth hasn't seen the last of the evil alien. Mysterious spaceship disappearances near Venus, an Academy student accidentally launching a prototype new spacecraft, and a floating prison cell in space...reveal themselves as all part of the Mekon's latest plan to defeat his arch-enemy Dan Dare once and for all. The first season of Dan Dare concludes with daring space action, fearless heroics and the revelation of devastating secrets concerning Space Fleet. Contains a fourth disc of extras.
