Fully revised for its third edition, the Oxford Handbook of Expedition and Wilderness Medicine continues to be the essential resource for all expedition medics and well-informed travellers, as well as nurses, paramedics, medical students, and other expedition members travelling in remote, wilderness areas of the world. Now containing more guidance about caving medicine, the third edition includes revised and additional illustrations and essential maps of the spread of diseases. Clear and concise, readers can rely on this handbook to provide the key knowledge and practical advice they need. It enables efficient preparation and planning before the journey, advises on camp logistics, risk management, and medical problems during the expedition, as well as highlighting rare but important risks to those visiting remote areas. Focusing on preventative measures, it also contains chapters dealing with crisis management, emergency care, and evacuation from challenging environments, with guidance about the obligations of a clinician joining an expedition, ethical approaches to such work, and medicine in various extreme environments. This edition will give you the confidence and skills you need to travel to any extreme or remote environment. Incorporating the combined knowledge and experience of a team of experienced clinicians and expeditioners, this is a practical, easy-to-use guide to all aspects of expedition and wilderness medicine.
A Different View of Curriculum and Assessment links a theoretical pedagogical model with a sympathetic practical model of curriculum and assessment difference for those with PMLD, CLD and SLD. Split into two parts, this accessible resource combines theoretical explanations with first-hand accounts of how this works in educational establishments, through the analysis of evidence-based practice carried out in a number of English special (specialist) schools. The expert authors challenge the notion that a national, or common core standards, curriculum, however expertly differentiated, is fit-for-purpose for the PMLD, CLD and SLD populations in any country. A Different View offers cogent and reasoned arguments for considering that irrespective of age, such learners learn differently to their neuro-typical, conventionally developing peers. If they learn differently, this book shows how we should be teaching them differently. Reflecting the centrality of process over product, this book will clearly explain how each individual learner might be enabled and facilitated to become the best they can be and do the best they can do, in order to fully realise their potential as equal and independent citizens.
Since J W Norie published the first edition of his Complete Set of Nautical Tables and Epitome of Practical Navigation in 1803, many changes to the tables have been necessary in both content and presentation. New tables have been included, obsolete ones deleted to conform with changing techniques of navigation, with the aim of improving the accuracy of the calculated position and reducing the tedium of the calculation. Since the commissioning of the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), its proven accuracy and reliability in all weather conditions have resulted in confidence and almost unquestioning dependence on its ability to provide a vessel’s position, course and speed. Its use is widespread but the marine environment is a hostile one and failure of electronic equipment or of the system itself is a possibility. No prudent seafarer would proceed on an ocean passage without a reliable navigational back-up. The Explanation is in the form of a detailed step-by-step description, by means of worked examples, of the different methods of performing navigational calculations using a scientific calculator and/or the tables. A number of esteemed editors have worked on Nories’ Nautical Tables over the years and this edition includes new contributions from François Hugo. This edition now presents formulae in an appropriate format for direct entry to a scientific calculator. Because the possibility of navigation without even an appropriate calculator exists, the logarithms have been retained. • All the tables required for coastal and deep sea navigation are included • A simple uniform method of interpolation for all the trigonometrical tables is used • Certain tables and data are also included which are not readily available on board ship or are only used in the examination room.
This 8th edition has been fully revised to include new information on marinas, visitor moorings and anchorages, with all the attendant facilities available to cruising sailors. There is also plenty to give historical context and to whet the appetite for visits and exploration ashore. Plans have been updated throughout. Numerous photographs help to orientate, inform and inspire, including a new set of images for the Italian coast and Venice lagoon. For occasional charterers or long-term cruisers alike, Trevor and Dinah Thompson's thorough and comprehensive work should be the first choice of any cruising sailor wanting to make the most of this rich and diverse coastline. Adriatic Pilot is complemented by Imray's series of charts for the Dalmatian coast.
Chart 100 shows the main trend of depth contours, limits of ice, magnetic variations and keys routes as identified by Donald M. Street Jr. In the enclosed booklet are pilot charts showing winds, currents and wave height frequencies with accompanying notes on favourable route timings and hurricane risk. Chart 100 is an important companion for Atlantic yachtsmen on passage and an excellent source of planning information.
Greek Waters Pilot is the definitive cruising guide to the coasts and islands of Greece, covering the entire area from the Ionian Islands to the Aegean, Rhodes and Crete and includes details of over 450 harbours and anchorages in a single volume. Greek Waters Pilot has been painstakingly compiled from Rod and Lucinda Heikell's own survey work and exploration over four decades, as well as first-hand information from their network of contributors. The organisation of so much detail within the confines of a single volume is impressive. This, the fourteenth edition, marks the fortieth anniversary of the first edition of this celebrated cruising guide. It has once again been thoroughly updated to reflect developments and changes across the whole region. Enriched with fascinating historical, mythological and gastronomic information, Greek Waters Pilot is an incomparable resource and companion for anyone planning to spend time in these endlessly enticing waters.

With support from the Inland Waterways Association, Friends of the River Nene and others, and drawing on his longstanding connection with the river, Roger Green has thoroughly revised and updated this popular guide. A new design includes thorough navigation notes alongside more detailed maps of the canal and river, showing the main features of the navigation. Helpful tables indicate mileages and likely timings between locks to help with passage planning and also provide further information on all the moorings, facilities and services, many of which have been much improved in recent years. Other features of interest such as canoe launch access and portage points are also shown. Details of facilities, walking and cycling routes and local history add useful information. Photographs help to highlight points of interest along the way and confirm this guide to be the essential companion for anyone planning to navigate the river, whether by boat, canoe, bicycle or on foot.
West Aegean is a companion guide which provides details of places that are mentioned only lightly in Greek Waters Pilot. It is particularly useful for charterers, flotilla sailors and others based in the area. There is in depth information on getting around, places to visit on land and background information which cover topics ranging from food and wine to Greece's Classical past and ancient sites. Rod and Lu Heikell's writing is acclaimed and their pilotage notes, supported by plans and photographs many of which have been taken by Lu, are regarded as the last word on the areas that they cover.
The second edition of this well-received title from the Royal Cruising Club Pilotage Foundation covers the entire Mediterranean mainland coast of Spain from Gibraltar to the French border. This is the only detailed pilot for the Spanish Mediterranean coast running up from Gibraltar to the border with France. It covers a varied cruising area that includes the mountain-backed Costas del and Sol and Blanca, the expansive lagoon of the Mar Menor, the low-lying Ebro delta and the rugged Costa Brava. In between are several great cities including Malaga, Valencia, Tarragona and Barcelona, the Catalan capital. The volume opens with Gibraltar and La Linea. Fully updated, and with new sections on behaviourism, attachment disorders, neuro-scientific developments and working with dis-engaged learners, this second edition of Turning the Tables contains real-life case studies, strategies for identification and handy hints and tips throughout. It is the authoritative guide to tackling challenging behaviour and working effectively with children, young people and adults with severe learning difficulties (SLD), profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD) and those on the autistic spectrum with a dual ASD and learning difficulties diagnosis. With a unique approach, the author stresses the need to diagnose not only the correct difficulty but the degree of learning difficulty for a lasting resolution, as well as tackling common behavioural problems such as attention needing and task avoidance. Chapters are split into three specific areas, SLD, PMLD and ASD/SLD, covering: the 'Magnificent Seven' fundamental principles of challenging behaviour strategies for correct identification of the main area of learning difficulty improving teaching methods and strategies to resolve challenging behaviour, including handy hints and tips when things don't go to plan extensive use of real case studies to illustrate strategies for resolution guidance on writing your own Behaviour Support Plan. This is a practical and authoritative guide to dealing with the myriad of challenging behaviours that constantly puzzle practitioners. It is an essential read for all professionals, parents and carers working with children, young people and adults with SLD, SLD/ASD and PMLD.
Inclusion is Dead is a provocative polemic against the widely held notion that inclusion for all children and young people with SEN is both possible and desirable. For those with severe learning difficulties (SLD) and profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD), the authors argue, it is neither. Imray and Colley assert that the dominance of inclusion has meant that there has been no serious attempt to look at the educational difficulties faced by learners with PMLD and SLD. As a vision of egalitarianism and equality for all, they say, inclusion is dead. The authors controversially believe that unless education changes, it will remain as a disabling institution that does the exact opposite of its intention. The book presents the argument that theorists of inclusion have failed to provide practical solutions on how inclusion can be achieved when SLD and PMLD learners are involved, as well as discussing the drawbacks of the 'inclusion for all argument'. With up-to-date references throughout, Inclusion is Dead will be an insightful read for teachers and SENCO trainers, as well as postgraduates and undergraduates studying courses on politics, philosophy and society.

"Any yachtsman even contemplating a visit to this loveliest of cruising areas could be considered negligent if he did not buy this book". - RHR, Cruising "...The author finds it difficult to avoid superlatives when talking about Norwegian scenery. I find it equally difficult to avoid superlatives when talking about this book. I am impressed. Also most Norwegians may learn a lot of facts from this excellent book. This will remain a classic, and will come in new editions in the foreseeable future..." Customer feedback “For anyone sailing in Norwegian waters this book is an absolute must. It is the perfect example of a truly excellent pilot from which practically nothing can be found missing.” Christine Holroyd, Cruising Association magazine.
Successor to Henry Irving's long-established guide to the nooks and crannies of this fascinating corner of the east coast of England, this new title has extended coverage under the authorship of retired harbourmaster and local cruising sailor Peter Harvey. Some choose to bypass this beautiful section of coast and its extraordinary natural habitats, but this cruising guide gives inspiration to anyone who wishes to explore the many shallow creeks and deeper historic harbours of Norfolk, Lincolnshire and the Humber. With thoroughly updated text and plans and new photographs throughout, The Wash and Humber remains an essential companion to this interesting and rewarding section of our coastline. |
