Ingersoll Lockwood's patriotic and biographical stage drama takes
place immediately before, during and amid the aftermath of the
American War of Independence. The initial scenes take place in the
household of George Washington. First through the words of his
servants, we are introduced to the man who led the American
rebellion against the British. Staking his prosperous life on the
cause, Washington is shown to be a family man of noble spirit,
immensely devoted to his proud mother and his doting wife, as well
as the slaves who maintain his household. As the war commences, the
harsh and bloody realities of skirmishes are matched with the
resolve of Washington and his generals. In perhaps the most
emotionally charged passages of the drama, Washington is informed
of the betrayal of Benedict Arnold. Shocked, aghast, distraught and
initially in denial at the treason of a friend he'd so trusted and
admired, Washington steels his spirit to recognize the horrible
truth.
This collection unites Ingersoll Lockwood's classic Baron Trump
adventure stories in one volume. Filled with exotic flights of
fancy, the Baron Trump tales feature the titular character - a
wealthy boy who lives in Trump Castle. His actual name is Wilhelm
Heinrich Sebastian Von Troomp, but for the sake of simplicity he
goes by his title of Baron Trump. The young fellow embarks on time
travelling adventures through human history. Through his travels,
he meets societies of people and tribes from long ago, picking up
their language and social customs. Accompanied by his faithful and
protective companion hound Bulger, the young Baron navigates a
variety of adventures and surmounts many obstacles. The final book
discusses the rise of a US President and has been variously
described as coincidental or prescient of the 21st century
political climate. Set in an America torn by division, there are
references to a hotel on Fifth Avenue in New York, and an election
of an outsider candidate ensuing amid chaos.
An obscure masterpiece until recently, Ingersoll Lockwood's fin de
siecle short story '1900; or, The Last President' was written in
1896 but uncannily describes the current political situation in
America today. Indeed, many readers believe the author tapped into
a mysterious force in the composition of his eerily clairvoyant
tale. The futuristic fable outlines the rise of a populist
president in "the fatal year of 1999," and extrapolates what the
consequences of electing such a seemingly popular
Commander-in-Chief might be.
1893. Baron Trump began his travels at an early age and filled his
castle with such strange objects picked up here an there in the far
away corners of the world that the simple-minded peasants came to
look upon him as a magician, hence the many myths and stories
concerning him.
