Developments in the Arctic region are increasingly part of international discussion. The book contains a comprehensive and interdisciplinary analysis of the current problems around marine scientific research in the Arctic region. It combines scientific, legal and policy aspects. The main questions addressed are: ongoing and future Arctic marine research, marine research in the Arctic Ocean in practice, the legal framework, enlarged continental shelves and the freedom of marine science and particularities and challenges of the Arctic region. The contributors are leading experts in the field of politics, law and science.

Die Festschrift enthalt Beitrage von renommierten Volkerrechtlern und herausragenden in- und auslandischen Diplomaten und Praktikern. Die Schwerpunkte liegen bei Fragen des Volkerrechts, Verfassungsrechts und der deutschen Wiedervereinigung. Besonders aktuell sind dabei u.a. mehrere Beitrage zum Sicherheitsrat der Vereinten Nationen, zum Seerecht, zu den Menschenrechten und zur Terrorismusbekampfung.
Die Themen nehmen Bezug auf die berufliche Tatigkeit des Jubilars, der an wichtiger Stelle an der Ausarbeitung der Ostvertrage und den Verhandlungen zum Internationalen Seerechtsubereinkommen beteiligt war. Tono Eitel war u.a. Volkerrechtsberater des Auswartigen Amts und Botschafter bei den Vereinten Nationen.

The anniversary volume in honour of Tono Eitel's 70th birthday is a collection of essays by distinguished international law experts as well as prominent German and foreign diplomats and other specialists. The issues dealt with cover a range of themes relating to international and constitutional law as well as German reunification. Several contributions of particularly topical interest focus on the United Nations Security Council, the law of the sea, human rights and the fight against terrorism.
The subjects covered are all reflected in the various stages of Tono Eitel's career. He not only played an important part in negotiating the so-called Eastern Treaties with the Soviet Union, Poland and Czechoslovakia as well as the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, but also served as Legal Adviser of the Federal Foreign Office and as Germany's ambassador to the United Nations.
