Ken Manktelow, David Over, Shira Elqayam
R1,744 Discovery Miles 17 440 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume is a state-of-the-art survey of the psychology of reasoning, based around, and in tribute to, one of the field's most eminent figures: Jonathan St B.T. Evans. In this collection of cutting edge research, Evans' collaborators and colleagues review a wide range of important and developing areas of inquiry. These include biases in thinking, probabilistic and causal reasoning, people's use of 'if' sentences in arguments, the dual-process theory of thought, and the nature of human rationality. These foundational issues are examined from various angles and finally integrated in a concluding panoramic chapter written by Evans himself. The eighteen chapters, all written by leading international researchers, combine state-of the-art research with investigation into the most fundamental questions surrounding human mental life, such as: What is the architecture of the human mind? Are humans rational, and what is the nature of this rationality? How do we think hypothetically? The Science of Reason offers a unique combination of breadth, depth and integrative vision, making it an indispensable resource for researchers and students of human reason.

Walter Whiter; Edited by Alan Over, Mary Bell
R3,685 Discovery Miles 36 850 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

If it is not generally known that the foundations of twentieth-century criticism of Shakespeare's imagery were laid over one hundred and fifty years ago, the explanation lies in the limited availability of the single original edition of Walter Whiter's Specimen of a Commentary on Shakspeare published in 1794. In an age in which the study of Shakespeare's characters was of prime interest and importance, Whiter - a classical scholar who took holy orders and ended his life as a country parson - developed a form of textual criticism closely linked to a study of the workings of the human mind: and his book offers a psychological survey of the creative imagination, following the principles laid down in Locke's Essay on Human Understanding and illustrated by examples from Shakespeare's plays. In his realization that Shakespeare provides the finest examples of the poetic imagination Whiter is of his time: but in his particular study of the associative powers of such a mind engaged in the process of creation, he is far in advance of his time and has no immediate disciples in the later nineteenth century. In the twentieth century, however, there was an increasing acknowledgement of Whiter's work and a more frequent appeal for the reissue of his book. Originally published in 1967, the present edition was started in response to that appeal more than ten years before Mr Alan Over's tragic death in 1964 and incorporates the revisions and additions made by Whiter for his own projected second edition.

Unexpect is a monograph on the work of Michael Ryan Architects, a practice based in Philadelphia, PA. Written by Michael Ryan, it is far from being a conventional architectural monograph. Through storytelling, he takes a fresh and perceptive look at the work of the firm. Projects are documented with detailed photographic explorations and descriptions that embody Michael Ryan's architectural vision, talent and principles. Also included is a comprehensive appendix of plans and elevations for each project. The monograph features the philosophy of the firm as well as a brief history of Michael Ryan's education, career and main influences. The firm's collaborative approach is shown through the interior design work of Ryan's wife, Randee Spelkoman. The introduction is written by the respected academic Gray Read who was a classmate of Ryan's at the University of Pennsylvania.

Kingship, Conquest, and Patria - Literary and Cultural Identities in Medieval French and Welsh Arthurian Romance (Paperback):... Kingship, Conquest, and Patria - Literary and Cultural Identities in Medieval French and Welsh Arthurian Romance (Paperback)
Kristen Lee Over
R1,472 Discovery Miles 14 720 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Distinctly interdisciplinary, Kingship, Conquest, and Patria brings together French and Welsh studies with literary and historical analysis, genre study with questions of medieval colonialisms and national writing. It treats eight centuries' worth of insular and continental literature, placing the 12th- and 13th-century development of Arthurian romance in a history of fraught, ambiguous relations between Capetian France, Angevin England, and native Wales. Overall, the book aims to contextualize how French Arthurian romance and Welsh rhamant, despite being products of opposing cultures in an age of conquest, collectively revise the figure of King Arthur created by earlier insular tradition. At a time when contemporary monarchies sought to curtail the autonomy of both northern French and Welsh principalities, the literary image of kingship pointedly declines in romance and rhamant, replaced by an ideal of knightly independence. A focus on the romance portrait of King Arthur is the culmination of this study: Part I provides a survey of early British Arthurian material written in Latin and Welsh; Part II presents the historical contexts in northern France and Wales out of which the genre of Arthurian romance emerged; Part III turns to literary and sociopolitical analyses of Chretien's five romances and the three Welsh rhamantau.

The Heroic in Music (Hardcover): Beate Kutschke, Katherine Butler The Heroic in Music (Hardcover)
Beate Kutschke, Katherine Butler; Contributions by Beate Kutschke, Katherine Butler, Roman Hankeln, …
R2,460 Discovery Miles 24 600 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Reconstructs the socio-political history of the heroic in music through case studies spanning the middle ages to the twenty-first century The first part of this volume reconstructs the various musical strategies that composers of medieval chant, Renaissance madrigals, and Baroque operas, cantatas or oratorios employed when referring to heroic ideas exemplifying their personal moral and political values. A second part investigating the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries expands the previous narrow focus on Beethoven's heroic middle period and the cult of the virtuoso. It demonstrates the wide spectrum of heroic positions - national, ethnic, revolutionary, bourgeois and spiritual - that filtered not only into 'classical' large-scale heroic symphonies and virtuoso solo concerts, but also into chamber music and vernacular dance music. The third part documents the forced heroization of music in twentieth-century totalitarian regimes such as Nazi-Germany and the Soviet Union and its consequences for heroic thinking and musical styles in the time thereafter. Final chapters show how recent rock-folk and avant-garde musicians in North America and Europe feature new heroic models such as the everyday hero and the scientific heroine revealing new confidence in the idea of the heroic.

New Paradigm Psychology of Reasoning - Basic and applied perspectives (Paperback): Shira Elqayam, Jean-Francois Bonnefon, David... New Paradigm Psychology of Reasoning - Basic and applied perspectives (Paperback)
Shira Elqayam, Jean-Francois Bonnefon, David Over
R1,413 Discovery Miles 14 130 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In recent years the psychology of reasoning has undergone radical change, which can only be seen as a Kuhn-style scientific revolution. This shift has been dubbed 'New Paradigm'. For years, psychologists of reasoning focused on binary truth values and regarded the influence of belief as a bias. In contrast to this, the new paradigm puts probabilities, and subjective degrees of belief, centre stage. It also emphasises subjective psychological value, or utility; the way we reason within our own social environment ('social pragmatics'); and the crucial role of dual process theories. Such theories distinguish between fast, intuitive processes, and effortful processes which enable hypothetical thinking. The new paradigm aims to integrate the psychology of reasoning with the study of judgement and decision making, leading to a much more unified field of higher mental processing. This collection showcases these recent developments, with chapters on topics such as the difference between deduction and induction, a Bayesian formulation of faint praise, the role of emotion in reasoning, and the relevance of psychology of reasoning to moral judgement. This book was originally published as a special issue of Thinking & Reasoning.

The Anthropology of Love and Anger - The Aesthetics of Conviviality in Native Amazonia (Paperback): Joanna Overing, Alan Passes The Anthropology of Love and Anger - The Aesthetics of Conviviality in Native Amazonia (Paperback)
Joanna Overing, Alan Passes
R1,603 Discovery Miles 16 030 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Anthropology of Love and Anger questions the very foundations of western sociological thought. In their examination of indigenous peoples from across the South American continent, the contributors to this volume have come to realise that western thought does not possess the vocabulary to define even the fundamentals of indigenous thought and practice. The dualisms of public and private, political and domestic, individual and collective, even male and female, in which western anthropology was founded cannot legitimately be applied to peoples whose 'sociality' is based on an 'aesthetics of community'.
For indigenous people success is measured by the extent to which conviviality, (all that is peaceful, harmonious and sociable) has been attained. Yet conviviality is not just reliant on love and good but instead on an even balance between all that is constructive, love, and all that is destructive, anger.
With case studies from across the South American region, ranging from the (so-called) fierce Yanomami of Venezuela and Brazil to the Enxet of Paraguay, and with discussions on topics from the efficacy of laughter, the role of language, anger as a marker of love and even homesickness, The Anthropology of Love and Anger is a seminal, fascinating work which should be read by all students and academics in the post-colonial world.

Can we judge Amerindian social behaviour by our own standards? To what extent is social success based on love and anger in the Amazon region? "The Anthropology of Love and Anger" provides evidence that Anthropology is a thriving subject. In this discussion the editors have brought together papers that question the very foundations of western sociological thought. In their examination of the "social structure", or rather "sociality" (the former expression being inapplicable in this context) of indigenous peoples from across the South American continent, the contributors have come to realize that western thought does not possess the vocabulary to define the very fundamentals of indigenous thought and practice. The dualisms of public and private, political and domestic, individual and collective, even male and female, in which western Anthropology was founded cannot legitimately be applied to peoples whose "sociality" is based on an "aesthetics of community". For indigenous peoples success is measured by the extent to which conviviality, (all that is peaceful, harmonious and sociable) has been attained. Yet it is not just a conviviality or "sociality" which relies on love and good but
