Spices weaved their way into my kitchen and somehow my collection
seems to flourish regardless of the homes and locations I’ve lived
in. From the author and chef of Cooking for my father in My Cape
Malay Kitchen, comes a cookbook that chronicles her adulation and
reverence for spices. Cariema Isaacs’s affinity for spices emanates
from her Cape Malay heritage and her time spent cooking and baking
in her grandmother’s kitchen in Bo-Kaap, the Cape Malay Quarter in
Cape Town. Thus, at a very early age she understood the tastes
derived from cumin and coriander, the pungency of fennel, cloves
and star anise, and the piquancy of chilli powder, cayenne pepper
and masala blends. Spice Odyssey showcases a multitude of
beautifully written recipes with some familiar spices from her Cape
Malay heritage and fresh aromatics from her travels to India,
Turkey, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and the Middle East. ‘From east to
west, north to south, the routes and journeys travelled from shore
to shore by slaves and explorers, travellers and traders, the story
of spices emerged and the spice odyssey began.’
The love language of the Cape Malays is food, and author Cariema Isaacs says tramakasie (thank you) every day that she gets to express herself in this way.
Modern Cape Malay Cooking, Cariema’s fourth cookbook, is a celebration of food and feasting, providing a contemporary view of Cape Malay cuisine and simple home cooking. The recipes showcase a blend of flavours that redefine the Cape Malay palate through modern ingredients and global influences. Though traditional Cape Malay cuisine and recipes have stood the test of time, adaptations have given rise to a culinary fusion. This is especially thanks to the Cape Malay millennial generation that craves popular dishes from the East and West, such as a comforting pasta or a quick stir-fry, but with a Cape Malay twist – this means it must be spicy, it must be saucy and it must be packed with flavour!
In Modern Cape Malay Cooking, Cariema shares the recipes and influences that have inspired these modern dishes, with simple ingredients and vibrant aromatics for anyone who is curious and courageous enough to create flavour.

Presents cutting edge theory about the consequences of social
movements and protest while asking what kind of trade-offs protest
movements face in trying to change the world around them. Many
scholars have tried to figure out why some social movements have an
impact and others do not. By looking inside movements at their
component parts and recurrent strategic interactions, the authors
of Gains and Losses show that movements usually produce a variety
of effects, including recurring packages of gains and losses. They
ask what kinds of trade-offs and dilemmas these packages reflect by
looking at six empirical cases from around the world: Seattle's
conflict over the $15 an hour minimum wage; the establishment of
participatory budgeting in New York City; a democratic insurgency
inside New York City's Transport Workers' Union; a communist
party's struggle to gain votes and also protect citizen housing in
Graz, Austria; the internal movement tensions that led to Hong
Kong's umbrella occupation; and Russia's electoral reform movement
embodied in Alexei Navalny. They not only examine the diverse
players in these cases involved in politics and protest, but also
the many strategic arenas in which they maneuver. While each of
these movements made some remarkable gains, this book shows how
many also suffered losses, especially in the longer run.
Thirty years after the Battle of Endor, a new threat has risen in the form of the First Order and the villainous Kylo Ren.

This cutting-edge Handbook argues for social protection to be
situated in a wider system of social welfare and development
programmes for low- and middle-income countries. Focusing on the
role of citizens and communities in enhancing human development, it
explores how welfare systems are unfolding in diverse contexts
across the global South. Tracing the evolution and theory of social
protection, the Handbook examines the nature, design, scope, goals
and linkages of social protection and social development
programmes. Case studies examine responses to the COVID-19
pandemic; the entrepreneurial character of modern social protection
schemes; cash transfer schemes and the move towards cash-plus
policies; and the fluidity between progression and regression of
social protection. With global and regional reviews of social
protection from in-country experts, the Handbook provides
innovative solutions to key challenges. Bridging theoretical and
empirical approaches, the Handbook on Social Protection and Social
Development in the Global South will prove an invaluable resource
for academics and graduate students of development, social policy
and sociology. Its comprehensive overview of the field will also be
useful for policymakers and practitioners working on social welfare
and development in the global South.

The fourth outing in the popular espionage action thriller
franchise based on the Jason Bourne novels by Robert Ludlum.
Written and directed by Tony Gilroy, who scripted the first three
films, the film moves away from the central Bourne character
(played in the opening trilogy by Matt Damon) to focus on a new
protagonist, CIA operative Aaron Cross (Jeremy Renner). The film,
which takes up events where 'The Bourne Ultimatum' left off, sees
Cross making the vow to give himself over completely to 'the
operation', and quickly proving himself to be the shining star in a
new generation of deadly undercover assassins. Rachel Weisz and
Edward Norton co-star, while pivotal roles from the previous films
are reprised by Joan Allen, David Strathairn, Albert Finney and
Scott Glenn.
