On the occasion of his 85th birthday the famous international
German artist Georg Baselitz (*1938) has donated a collection of
works on paper to both the Albertina Museum in Vienna and the
Morgan Library in New York. The publication combines the 100 sheets
to create a representative retrospective, providing by virtue of
its concentration an important contribution to the understanding of
his entire oeuvre. The two extensive sets of drawings and
watercolours date from different creative phases from the early
1960s to the present day. Through this direct medium the works
provide an intimate insight into the artist’s creative process
across the past five decades. An interview with Georg Baselitz
conducted to mark this publication provides information about the
significance of the works on paper in the genesis of his works and
within his oeuvre.
Best known for his luscious paintings of pies and ice-cream cones,
American artist Wayne Thiebaud (born 1920) has been an avid and
prolific draftsman since he began his career in the 1940s as an
illustrator and cartoonist. This book of about ninety drawings -
compiled with the full cooperation of the artist to accompany a
major new exhibition at the Morgan Library & Museum - explores
the wide range of Thiebaud's production on paper, including early
sketches, luminous pastels and watercolours, and charcoal drawings
made in connection with his teaching. In subjects ranging from deli
counters and isolated figures to dramatic views of San Francisco's
plunging streets, Thiebaud's drawings endow the most banal,
everyday scenes with a sense of poetry and nostalgia. Fully
illustrated and beautifully designed, with illuminating texts,
including an extensive interview with the artist, Wayne Thiebaud:
Draftsman is the first major publication devoted to his lifelong
engagement with drawing.
Minimalist artist Dan Flavin (1933-96) is best known for his
brightly colored fluorescent light installations, which have
captivated art lovers for decades. But he was also an accomplished
draftsman, and this is the first book to fully explore the central
role that drawing played in Flavin's art.
Not only did Flavin produce numerous sketches for each of his light
installations, he also regularly drew outdoors, primarily
riverscapes and beach scenes. A number of those drawings are
included in this volume, as are a group of remarkable pastels of
sails, a subject he turned to when he was in his fifties. This book
also draws on Flavin's journals, in which he wrote about his
passion for drawing, which he called "an intensely concentrated
personal form of artistic relief." Yet despite the importance of
drawing in Flavin's life, his drawings are little known, in part
because he almost never sold--or even gave away--his drawings. Most
of the works reproduced here were never shown publicly and are
being published here for the first time.
Offering a surprising new angle on a major artist, "Dan Flavin:
Drawing" will surprise--and delight--his many fans.
