The Anthropology of Postindustrialism - Ethnographies of Disconnection (Paperback): Ismael Vaccaro, Krista Harper, Seth Murray The Anthropology of Postindustrialism - Ethnographies of Disconnection (Paperback)
Ismael Vaccaro, Krista Harper, Seth Murray
R1,202 Discovery Miles 12 020 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume explores how mechanisms of postindustrial capitalism affect places and people in peripheral regions and de-industrializing cities. While studies of globalization tend to emphasize localities newly connected to global systems, this collection, in contrast, analyzes the disconnection of communities away from the market, presenting a range of ethnographic case studies that scrutinize the framework of this transformative process, analyzing new social formations that are emerging in the voids left behind by the de-industrialization, and introducing a discussion on the potential impacts of the current economic and ecological crises on the hyper-mobile model that has characterized this recent phase of global capitalism and spatially uneven development.

Negotiating Territoriality - Spatial Dialogues Between State and Tradition (Paperback): Allan Charles Dawson, Laura Zanotti,... Negotiating Territoriality - Spatial Dialogues Between State and Tradition (Paperback)
Allan Charles Dawson, Laura Zanotti, Ismael Vaccaro
R1,207 Discovery Miles 12 070 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This edited collection disrupts dominant narratives about space, states, and borders, bringing comparative ethnographic and geographic scholarship in conversation with one another to illuminate the varied ways in which space becomes socialized via political, economic, and cognitive appropriation. Societies must, first and foremost, do more than wrangle over ownership and land rights - they must dwell in space. Yet, historically the interactions between the state's territorial imperative with previous forms of landscape management have unfolded in a variety of ways, including top-down imposition, resistance, and negotiation between local and external actors. These interactions have resulted in hybrid forms of territoriality, and are often fraught with fundamentally different perceptions of landscape. This book foregrounds these experiences and draws attention to situations in which different social constructions of space and territory coincide, collide, or overlap. Each ethnographic case in this volume presents forms of territoriality that are contingent upon contested histories, politics, landscape, the presence or absence of local heterogeneity and the involvement of multiple external actors with differing motivations - ultimately all resulting in the potential for conflict or collaboration and divergent implications for conceptions of community, autochthony and identity.

Social and Ecological History of the Pyrenees - State, Market, and Landscape (Hardcover): Ismael Vaccaro, Oriol Beltran Social and Ecological History of the Pyrenees - State, Market, and Landscape (Hardcover)
Ismael Vaccaro, Oriol Beltran
R4,449 Discovery Miles 44 490 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This major work of historical ecology advances the integration of research on environmental and social systems, contributing important lessons for contemporary natural resource policy and management. A diverse, international region, the Pyrenees has been characterized as a quintessential example of rural areas across Europe and North America. The authors use qualitative and quantitative methods from economics, history, anthropology, and ecological science to integrate human agency and ecology across a landscape that moved from agricultural and pastoral production to industrialization, then experienced acute depopulation, and now is becoming a focus of conservation and tourism. The book shows how today's most pressing resource policy challenges are best illuminated by this broad, long-term understanding of humans and landscapes.

Environmental Social Sciences - Methods and Research Design (Paperback): Ismael Vaccaro, Eric Alden Smith, Shankar Aswani Environmental Social Sciences - Methods and Research Design (Paperback)
Ismael Vaccaro, Eric Alden Smith, Shankar Aswani
R1,651 Discovery Miles 16 510 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The relationship between human communities and the environment is extremely complex. In order to resolve the issues involved with this relationship, interdisciplinary research combining natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities is necessary. In this 2010 book, specialists summarise methods and research strategies for various aspects of social research devoted to environmental issues. Each chapter is illustrated with ethnographic and environmental examples, ranging from Australia to Amazonia, from Madagascar to the United States, and from prehistoric and historic cases to contemporary rural and urban ones. It deals with climate change, deforestation, environmental knowledge, natural reserves, politics and ownership of natural resources, and the effect of differing spatial and temporal scales. Contributing to the intellectual project of interdisciplinary environmental social science, this book shows the possibilities social science can provide to environmental studies and to larger global problems and thus will be of equal interest to social and natural scientists and policy makers.
