This open access book was prepared as a Final Publication of the
COST Action IC1304 "Autonomous Control for a Reliable Internet of
Services (ACROSS)". The book contains 14 chapters and constitutes a
show-case of the main outcome of the Action in line with its
scientific goals. It will serve as a valuable reference for
undergraduate and post-graduate students, educators, faculty
members, researchers, engineers, and research strategists working
in this field. The explosive growth of the Internet has
fundamentally changed the global society. The emergence of concepts
like SOA, SaaS, PaaS, IaaS, NaaS, and Cloud Computing in general
has catalyzed the migration from the information-oriented Internet
into an Internet of Services (IoS). This has opened up virtually
unbounded possibilities for the creation of new and innovative
services that facilitate business processes and improve the quality
of life. However, this also calls for new approaches to ensuring
the quality and reliability of these services. The objective of
this book is, by applying a systematic approach, to assess the
state-of-the-art and consolidate the main research results achieved
in this area.
Wireless networks of moving objects have drawn significant
attention recently. These types of networks consist of a number of
autonomous or semi-autonomous wireless nodes/objects moving with
diverse patterns and speeds while communicating via several radio
interfaces simultaneously. To overcome current shortcomings, a
number of research challenges have to be addressed in this area,
ranging from initial conceptualization and modelling, to protocols
and architectures engineering, and development of suitable tools,
applications and services, and to the elaboration of realistic
use-case scenarios by taking into account corresponding societal
and economic aspects. By applying a systematic approach the
objective of this book is to assess the state of the art and
consolidate the main research results achieved in this area. It was
prepared as the Final Publication of the COST Action IC0906
"Wireless Networking for Moving Objects (WiNeMO)". The book
contains 15 chapters and is a show-case of the main outcomes of the
action in line with its scientific goals. The book will serve as a
valuable reference for undergraduate students, post-graduate
students, educators, faculty members, researchers, engineers, and
research strategists working in this field.
This open access book was prepared as a Final Publication of the
COST Action IC1303 "Algorithms, Architectures and Platforms for
Enhanced Living Environments (AAPELE)". The concept of Enhanced
Living Environments (ELE) refers to the area of Ambient Assisted
Living (AAL) that is more related with Information and
Communication Technologies (ICT). Effective ELE solutions require
appropriate ICT algorithms, architectures, platforms, and systems,
having in view the advance of science and technology in this area
and the development of new and innovative solutions that can
provide improvements in the quality of life for people in their
homes and can reduce the financial burden on the budgets of the
healthcare providers. The aim of this book is to become a
state-of-the-art reference, discussing progress made, as well as
prompting future directions on theories, practices, standards, and
strategies related to the ELE area. The book contains 12 chapters
and can serve as a valuable reference for undergraduate students,
post-graduate students, educators, faculty members, researchers,
engineers, medical doctors, healthcare organizations, insurance
companies, and research strategists working in this area.
Enhanced living environments employ information and communications
technologies to support true ambient assisted living for adults and
people with disabilities. This book provides an overview of today's
architectures, techniques, protocols, components, and cloud-based
solutions related to ambient assisted living and enhanced living
environments. Topics covered include: an introduction to enhanced
living environments; pervasive sensing for social connectedness;
ethics in information and communication technologies; service
scenarios in smart personal environments; technological support to
stress level monitoring; big data systems to improve healthcare
information searching over the Internet; sensors for wireless body
area networks; linear wireless sensor networks and protocols in
next generation networks; model-compilation challenges for
cyber-physical systems; health monitoring using wireless body area
networks; wearable health care; and intelligent systems for
after-stroke home rehabilitation.
