Jahrhunderts sowie deren Analyse zum Ziel. Dabei wird die These vertreten, dass in Grossbritannien nationalstaatliche Konstanz und sozialpolitische Flexibilitat nicht widerspruchlich nebeneinander stehen, sondern im Gegenteil eine stabile Nation forderlich fur und auf eine flexible Sozialpolitik wirken kann. Nach einer kurzen Einleitung und der Klarung bzw. der Kategorien des Nationenbegriffes soll die These chronologisch an den verschiedenen Epochen britischer Sozialgeschichte beginnend mit 1834 als dem Jahr der Einfuhrung der poor laws abgearbeitet und bewiesen werden. Dabei wird der Bogen vom 19. Jahrhundert uber die beiden Weltkriege, die Nachkriegszeit, der Thatcher-Ara hin bis zu der aktuellen Politik New Labours gespannt. Hier soll es besonders darum gehen, im Vergleich zu Kontinentaleuropa genuin britische Vorraussetzungen, Entwicklungen und Konstellationen aufzudecken, zu analysieren und im Lichte der Hypothese zu interpretieren. Ein zusammenfassendes Fazit mit Zukunftsperspektiven -und Moglichkeiten fur die (Weiter-)Entwicklung britischer Sozialpolitik insbesondere im Rahmen der Europaischen Integration sollen den Schluss der Arbeit bilden
