This is the first major treatment of the conflict of laws within
the UK, a subject often dealt with only incidentally in the main
texts on private international law. In particular, the book
examines the effect of the UK's changing constitutional
arrangements on questions of jurisdiction, choice of law and issues
of recognition and enforcement which arise within the UK.
The book offers practical guidance on the applicable rules in
intra-UK conflicts situations with sections devoted to forum
shopping within the UK, and other procedural matters. A chapter is
also included on the impact of EU legislation on intra-UK
conflicts, concluding with a discussion on how "Europeanization"
might affect the conflict of laws in the UK. There is also coverage
of how public policy functions in the conflict of laws. The book's
approach to the treatment of intra-UK conflicts is enhanced by a
comparative analysis of the recent response of Canada and Australia
to, respectively, interprovincial and interstate conflicts.
This book presents a collection of vivid, theoretically informed
descriptions of flashpoints--educational moments when the implicit
sociocultural knowledge carried in the body becomes a salient
feature of experience. The flashpoints will ignite critical
reflection and dialogue about the formation of the self, identity,
and social inequality on the level of the preconscious body.
Most comparativists have assumed that democratization is best
understood by looking at regimes in the transition and
consolidation phases of democracy without really considering the
essence of democracy--liberal rights and democratic virtues.
Democracy is seen as a mechanistic process without considering the
ideas that build democratic regimes. This book begins afresh by
proposing that comparativists need to consider democracy to be a
combination of rights and virtues, and that the difficulties of
democratic transitions, consolidation, and maintenance are
essentially problems relating to balancing rights and virtues in
the regime. How do we reemphasize these aspects of democracy at a
time when comparative literature focuses almost solely on
democratic procedure? By combining the best elements of comparative
theory and liberal democratic philosophy, Steven Hood argues that
comparativists can sharpen the scholarly tools we need to
understand both the problems of democratization and maintaining
democracy. He provides the reader with a valuable overview of
comparative theory and how our abandonment of political philosophy
has led to our acceptance of social science methods that can only
lead to superficial analyses of democratizing regimes and
established democracies.

In February 1979, China launched a full scale attack on Vietnam
bringing to the surface the deep tension between the two socialist
neighbours. The importance of the resultant war is often
overlooked. Millions of people throughout the region were affected,
and the frictions that remain in the wake of the war threaten the
prospects for peace not only in Southeast Asia, but also the whole
Asia-Pacific region as well. This is a full scale examination of
the 1979 Sino-Vietnamese War - the events that led to it, the Cold
War aftermath, and the implications for the region and beyond.

This book has been written with general practitioners primarily in
view, describing common paediatric conditions that present in the
outpatient clinics and those that require admission to hospital.
The book is neither a textbook of paediatrics nor a handbook but is
aimed to provide guidelines for the more commonplace conditions.
Some aspects therefore, have been dealt with in detail, where felt
relevant, while others are omitted on grounds of probable rare
encounter. It is hoped that this volume will provide the family
practitioner with an insight in the paediatrician's approach to
many of the common problems in chifdren and to help him decide on
the best course of action to follow. The care of children
constitutes a significant and important part of a family doctor's
work and practitioners are keen to promote optional care in all
circumstances. It is hoped that the endeavours of this book will go
in some small way to help put across the practitioner's approach.

Interaction with strangers cultivates creativity and provides
opportunities for joining forces to achieve great ends. However
most people tend to avoid talking or working with people they do
not know, whether in the library, a classroom, or in academic and
nonprofit settings. And to do so is to short-circuit much of the
creative potential that is so necessary for innovation, and that
organizational stakeholders crave. Enter CoLAB. Developed and
presented by de Farber at workshops across the country, and used by
the authors to successfully spur collaboration at the University of
Florida (including faculty-librarian, librarian-librarian,
librarian-student, faculty-faculty, student-student, and
student-librarian-community member), it showcases the power of
face-to-face conversations. Leading readers through a unique
framework that breaks down barriers to collaboration while also
kindling long-lasting enthusiasm, this manual includes:
testimonials from workshop participants that demonstrate the
benefits of a Collaborating with Strangers workshop; step by step
guidance on every aspect of organizing and presenting a CoLAB
workshop; helpful photographs and diagrams that show prep and
workshops in action; ready to use surveys for assessment before and
after the workshop; grant proposal development techniques for
bringing two or more organizations together on a project; pointers
on how to adapt the workshop for ice-breakers, conference programs,
or classrooms; and samples of workshop promotion pieces that can be
adapted as needed. Libraries have always connected patrons to
resources and information; this resource shows how, through
successful group collaboration, organizations can extend that
connection to include the talents and assets of community members.
