Ostracoda (Crustacea) are potentially excellent model organisms for
evolutionary studies, because they combine an extensive fossil
record with a wide recent distribution and therefore allow studies
on both patterns and processes leading to extant diversity. The
main scientific domains contributing theories, concepts, and data
to evolutionary biology are morphology (including ontogeny),
palaeontology, genetics, and ecology, and to all of these aspects
ostracods can contribute. This is clearly illustrated by the
fifteen papers presented under Theme 3 of the 13th International
Symposium on Ostracoda (Chatham, UK) in 1997 which are grouped in
the present proceedings, one of three volumes resulting from this
meeting. The contributions deal with the evolution of both extant
and fossil forms (including most of the Phanaerozoic), ecology of
both marine and freshwater taxa, and (developmental) morphology of
both soft parts and valves. Although the canvas is wide, each paper
clearly shows how studies on Ostracoda can be relevant to general
theory on evolutionary biology and ecology.
This book (hardcover) is part of the TREDITION CLASSICS. It
contains classical literature works from over two thousand years.

Over the last decade the environmental setup has changed for
synthetic organ ic chemists to a considerable degree. So far
synthetic organic chemistry had focussed on methodology development
which mainly deals with the develop ment of new reactions as well
as new reagents and catalysts. These ought to be able to perform
preferentially highly selective (chemo-, regio-and stereose
lective) synthetic transformations, often applied in the context of
complex and highly functionalized molecules. Except for the
synthesis of peptides and oligonucleic acids, little attention has
been spent on the question of how synthesis can be carried out in
an envi ronment of sophisticated technologies which includes
improved hardware. While peptides and oligonucleotides are
conveniently prepared by Merrifield's solid phase technique,
solution phase synthesis of most other synthetic targets have not
been substantially replaced by this solid phase approach. Without
discussing this aspect in detail it is obvious that today a
renaissance of sophis ticated solution phase synthesis can be
noted. Immobilization of reagents and particularly catalysts, an
old concept indeed, recently returned back onto the stage and this
is addressed in this volume of Topics in Current Chemistry in a
broader sense."
This up-to-date book is a synthesis of current knowledge from
published sources and expert consultants relating to three commonly
occurring problems in home health care
practice--self-administration of medications, family caregiving
issues, and teaching the elderly. For each problem addressed,
assessment guides and interventions are outlined, making this book
an invaluable resource for professionals, researchers, and agencies
concerned with providing top-quality care for the elderly. Home
health care agencies can use the guide for orientation of new staff
and inservice education for current staff. Home health care staff
can use many of the assessment guides and resource lists in their
work with clients. Facilitating Self Care Practices in the Elderly
can also serve as a basis for standard development. Researchers
interested in these clinical problems will find that the literature
review and synthesis will facilitate the development of the
theoretical underpinning for their research. Educators will find
the book helpful in courses and as a basis for curriculum
development.
Building software often seems harder than it ought to be. It takes
longer than expected, the software's functionality and performance
are not as wonderful as hoped, and the software is not particularly
malleable or easy to maintain. It does not have to be that way.
This book is about programming, and the role that formal
specifications can play in making programming easier and programs
better. The intended audience is practicing programmers and
students in undergraduate or basic graduate courses in software
engineering or formal methods. To make the book accessible to such
an audience, we have not presumed that the reader has formal
training in mathematics or computer science. We have, however,
presumed some programming experience. The roles of fonnal
specifications Designing software is largely a matter of combining,
inventing, and planning the implementation of abstractions. The
goal of design is to describe a set of modules that interact with
one another in simple, well defined ways. If this is achieved,
people will be able to work independently on different modules, and
yet the modules will fit together to accomplish the larger purpose.
In addition, during program maintenance it will be possible to
modify a module without affecting many others. Abstractions are
intangible. But they must somehow be captured and communicated.
That is what specifications are for. Specification gives us a way
to say what an abstraction is, independent of any of its
implementations."

This book uses a transactions cost approach to explain the key institutional characteristics across the public sector. It defines the distinctive governance, financing and employment arrangements that characterize the common forms of public sector organization: the regulatory commission, the executive tax-financed bureau and the state-owned enterprise. It suggests why these forms are used to perform different administrative functions, and why legislators often leave very important decisions to be resolved at the administrative level.

The beginning of this book starts with John the Baptist asking a
Question in Matthew 11:3-5, ..".art thou he that should come, or do
we look for another?" When John the Baptist asked this question he
was in prison hearing news about Jesus and his fame throughout the
region. From then until now people all over the world are looking
for and expecting great light from church leadership, just like the
people described in Capernaum. Scripture notes that these people of
Zabulon and Naphthalim were sitting in darkness when they saw a
great light. Great leaders always stand out and are easily
identified. This book details seven qualifying criteria for
leadership and the central thought is based on John's question. It
is important that people know their leaders are sanctioned by God.
Our Lord Jesus has set the example, therefore we ask... "Are you
the one or should we look for another?
The scope of work included the compilation and presentation of "a
cultural overview of the City Point area that includes the
placement of prehistoric and historic resources in the context of
James River and Chesapeake archaeology." The following report
presents this cultural overview of City Point, beginning with
evidence for Paleo- Indian activity in the James River region and
concluding with a consideration of the twentieth-century history
and landscape of the City Point Unit of the Petersburg National
Battlefield. Particular attention is paid to the role of the site
as a protohistoric Appomattuck village; to the possibility that
City Point is the location of the 1613-1622 English village of
Charles City; and to the centrality of the African American
experience at City Point from at least as early as 1635 through to
the present. Specific recommendations incorporated in the cultural
overview include the necessity for a comprehensive archaeological
survey of the City Point property to ascertain the location and
preservation of significant buried resources, which can be drawn
upon for future research and interpretation into the whole of human
history at the site. Another critical recommendation of the report
is the need to address the maritime resources associated with City
Point, and the ongoing threats to their integrity, which include
extensive looting of shipwrecks and material culture in the James
and Appomattox Rivers in territory administered by the National
Park Service, as well as the ongoing impact of erosion of the
bluffs at City Point.
