This study, first published in 1979, analyses the attitude of
various income and occupational groups to elementary schools both
before and after the introduction of compulsory school attendance.
It also discusses the efforts made by voluntary organisations to
provide school meals, as well as examining the quality of the meals
themselves, before the enactment of remedial legislation in the
early twentieth century. This title will be of interest to students
of history and education.

In Part I, the fundamentals of financial thinking and elementary
mathematical methods of finance are presented. The method of
presentation is simple enough to bridge the elements of financial
arithmetic and complex models of financial math developed in the
later parts. It covers characteristics of cash flows, yield curves,
and valuation of securities.
Part II is devoted to the allocation of funds and risk management:
classics (Markowitz theory of portfolio), capital asset pricing
model, arbitrage pricing theory, asset & liability management,
value at risk. The method explanation takes into account the
computational aspects.
Part III explains modeling aspects of multistage stochastic
programming on a relatively accessible level. It includes a survey
of existing software, links to parametric, multiobjective and
dynamic programming, and to probability and statistics. It focuses
on scenario-based problems with the problems of scenario generation
and output analysis discussed in detail and illustrated within a
case study.
This is the first scholarly study of the political and economic
relationship between Louis XIV and the parlements of France, the
Parlement of Paris and all the provincial tribunals. The author
explains how the king managed to impose strict political discipline
for which this reign, and only this reign, is known. Hurt shows
that the king built upon that discipline to extract large sums of
money from the judges in the parlements, thus damaging their
economic interests. When the king died in 1715, the regent,
Philippe d'Orleans, after a brief attempt to befriend the
parlements through compromise, resorted to the authoritarian
methods of Louis XIV and perpetuated the Sun King's political and
economic legacy. This study calls into question current revisionist
understanding of Louis XIV and insists that absolute government had
a harsh reality at its core. Based upon extensive archival
research, this remarkable book will be of interest to all students
of the history of early modern France and the monarchies of Europe.

Unlike other books that focus only on selected specific subjects
this book provides both a broad and rich cross-section of
contemporary approaches to stochastic modeling in finance and
economics; it is decision making oriented. The material ranges from
common tools to solutions of sophisticated system problems and
applications.

and output analysis discussed in detail and illustrated within a

finance, production planning and management of technological
processes and electricity generation are presented. Throughout, the
emphasis is on the appropriate use of the techniques, rather than
on the underlying mathematical proofs and theories.
In Part IV, the sections devoted tostochastic calculus cover also
more advanced topics such as DDS Theorem or extremal martingale
measures, which make it possible to treat more delicate models in
Mathematical Finance (complete markets, optimal control,
etc.)
Audience: Students and researchers in probability and statistics,
econometrics, operations research and various fields of finance,
economics, engineering, and insurance.
Agroterrorism is an emerging issue and potential threat to our
military because an attack would have a detrimental impact on our
military force readiness.
Odyssey of a Bombardier is the illustrated Prisoner of War "log"
that depicts the experiences of bombardier Richard M. Mason in
German prison camps after his B-17 "Flying Fortress" was shot down
by the Germans in France in 1944, the final year of World War II.
The log follows Mason from the day his plane crashed until his
liberation in April, 1945, and his return home to the United
States. Included are such topics as medical treatment and
rehabilitation for wounded prisoners of the Germans, life in Stalag
Luft III, a difficult long march in an arctic winter to another
camp, the travails of prisoners in the overcrowded, filthy camp at
Moosburg, critical food shortages, and the arrival of General
George Patton with the liberating forces. Mason was an amateur
artist and illustrated his journal with moving depictions of prison
life and comradeship. This book shows U.S. airmen demonstrating
grace and courage under pressure and meeting every challenge that
their imprisonment presented.
