World Education Research Yearbook 2015 (Paperback): Lori Diane Hill, Felice J. Levine World Education Research Yearbook 2015 (Paperback)
Lori Diane Hill, Felice J. Levine
R1,502 Discovery Miles 15 020 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The World Education Research Association (WERA) is an association of major national, regional, and international specialty research associations dedicated to advancing education research as a scientific and scholarly field. WERA undertakes initiatives that are global in nature and thus transcend what any one association can accomplish in its own country, region, or area of specialization. ______ Reflective of the latest trends in education research, this inaugural volume of the World Education Research Yearbook captures the diverse concepts and various arenas of inquiry that are engaging education researchers across the globe. Comprised of nine chapters, the 2015 Yearbook brings together some of the most accomplished and emerging scholars in the field, from a breadth of universities and research institutions in the United States, Europe, Australia, Asia, and South America. The Yearbook opens with the Presidential Address given at the 4th WERA Focal Meeting by Yin Cheong Cheng, who proposes a new paradigm of educational reform to address the challenges impressed upon educators by the increased globalization of the modern world. Subsequent chapters make vivid the strengths of research with a broader work view. Chapter contributions shift the discourse through a global lens, addressing such topics as how international children's TV can be used to further global health education and awareness, strategies for remedying low academic achievement among marginalized social and culture groups, and a new global model designed to aid countries in developing more effective indicators of quality education. The 2015 World Education Research Yearbook is a crucial and long-awaited contribution to the field of education research. Its relevance extends beyond the borders of any single country or continent to encompass a worldwide perspective on educational developments which are of great value to researchers, educators, and students alike.

After Sputnik - America, the World, and Cold War Conflicts (Hardcover): Alan J Levine After Sputnik - America, the World, and Cold War Conflicts (Hardcover)
Alan J Levine
R4,133 Discovery Miles 41 330 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

On October 4, 1957 in the midst of the Cold War, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik I, the first artificial earth satellite. For the West, and especially the United States, it was a shattering blow to national morale and pride. It led to a deep-seated fear that the Soviet Union would surpass the United States in both technology and power and that even nuclear war might be near. After Sputnik shows that the late 1950s were not an era of complacency and smugness, but were some of the most anxious years in American history. The Cold War was by no means a time of peace. It was an era of a different kind of battle-one that took place in negotiations and in the internal affairs of many countries, but not always on the battlefield. While many choose to remember President Eisenhower as a near-pacifist, his actions in Lebanon, the Taiwan Straits crisis, Berlin, and elsewhere proved otherwise. Seconded by his able secretary of state, John Foster Dulles, he steered America though some of the most difficult parts of the Cold War, not always succeeding, but preventing disaster. The Middle East and Berlin crises, the Indonesian Civil War, Fidel Castro's rise to power, and other events are all bluntly discussed in the light of Western, and other, illusions and delusions. In this engaging history, Alan J. Levine delves deeply into this often misrepresented period of history, and provides new insight into one of the most formative decades in American history.

Bad Old Days - The Myth of the 1950s (Paperback): Alan J Levine Bad Old Days - The Myth of the 1950s (Paperback)
Alan J Levine
R1,412 Discovery Miles 14 120 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

For many, especially those on the political left, the 1950s are the "bad old days." The widely accepted list of what was allegedly wrong with that decade includes the Cold War, McCarthyism, racial segregation, self-satisfied prosperity, and empty materialism. The failings are coupled with ignoring poverty and other social problems, complacency, conformity, the suppression of women, and puritanical attitudes toward sex. In all, the conventional wisdom sees the decade as bland and boring, with commonly accepted people paralyzed with fear of war, Communism, or McCarthyism, or all three. Alan J. Levine, shows that the commonly accepted picture of the 1950s is flawed. It distorts a critical period of American history. That distortion seems to be dictated by an ideological agenda, including an emotional obsession with a sentimentalized version of the 1960s that in turn requires maintaining a particular, misleading view of the post-World War II era that preceded it. Levine argues that a critical view of the 1950s is embedded in an unwillingness to realistically evaluate the evolution of American society since the 1960s. Many--and not only liberals and those further to the left--desperately desire to avoid seeing, or admitting, just how badly many things have gone in the United States since the 1960s. Bad Old Days shows that the conventional view of the 1950s stands in opposition to the reality of the decade. Far from being the dismal prelude to a glorious period of progress, the postwar period of the late 1940s and 1950s was an era of unprecedented progress and prosperity. This era was then derailed by catastrophic political and economic misjudgments and a drastic shift in the national ethos that contributed nothing, or less than nothing, to a better world.

Long regarded as a local institution, the community college has become a globalized institution. It has been affected by global forces, and by the interpretations of organizational members to both global forces and to the responses of intermediaries. Globalization as a process finds an outlet within the community college where economic, cultural, and technological behaviors are advanced along lines consistent with and supportive of globalization. Furthermore, government actions have directed community colleges to respond and adapt to a global economy. In this book, seven community colleges are examined to demonstrate organizational change in the 1990s precipitated by globalization.

It is surprising, and even disappointing, that there have been very few meetings and published volumes resulting from these meetings that focus attention upon all of the groups of DNA tumor viruses. Historically, separate meetings were held each year for the adenovirus-SV40-polyoma researchers, the herpes viruses, hepatitis B virus and the papillomaviruses. It was as if these four virus groups were four fields of study developing independently with a literature and culture of their own. When a virologist crossed the field from the adenovirus group to the herpesvirus or papillomaviruses, he or she was lost to their former group because of the structure of separate meetings and remote literature. This, of course, has resulted from historical accident and is being rectified by the rapid progress made in our understanding of how these viruses contribute to the causation of cancer in animals and humans. It was pre cisely because of these factors that it was time to hold a meeting and publish its proceedings on the subject of transforming proteins of DNA tumor viruses. For the first time, DNA tumor viruses were defined as all of the virus groups that can contribute to cancer in animals with the exception, unfortunately, of the . poxviruses. The purpose of the meeting was to bring together scientists who rarely attend meetings together but actually work on the same problems with different viruses.

Sir Dominic Corrigan's classic monograph "On Permanent Patency of the Mouth of the Aorta, or Inadequacy of the Aortic Valves" was published in 1832. Descriptions of aortic regurgitation had previously been published by others, but Corrigan's contribution was so comprehensive that his name is still closely associated with this disorder. He described the physical findings and the underlying gross pathologic anatomy of aortic regurgitation. He recognized that sudden death was not characteristic of aortic regurgitation, as it was in aortic stenosis, and his therapeutic approach was based on firm physiologic principles. In the past 150 years we have expanded Corrigan's work, and we have developed a detailed appreciation of the natural history, pathophysiology, diagnostic methods, and treatment of chronic aortic regurgitation. Fifteen years ago, cardiac catheterization and angiography had already achieved widespread application in the evaluation of aortic regurgitation, but cardiac ultrasound, especially Doppler echocardiography, was in its infancy, and the utility of radionuclide ventriculography was not widely appreciated.

This book employs a socio-cultural approach to study the organizational dynamics and experiences of self-formation that shape community college life. The authors use case studies to analyze both the symbolic dimension and practices that enable the production of educational experiences in seven community colleges across the U.S. Levin and Montero-Hernandez explain the construction of organizational identity and student development as a result of the connection between institutional forces and individual agency. This work emphasizes the forms and conditions of interaction among college personnel, students, and external groups that were enacted to respond to the demands and opportunities in both participants' local and larger contexts. The authors acknowledge both the collective and individual efforts of community college personnel to create caring community colleges that support nontraditional students.
