Decision Making and Business Performance (Paperback): Eric J. Bolland, Carlos J. Lopes Decision Making and Business Performance (Paperback)
Eric J. Bolland, Carlos J. Lopes
R954 Discovery Miles 9 540 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

How and to what extent do decisions affect business performance? Despite years of study by academic researchers and industry practitioners, there still remains a need to draw a clear and established connection between decision making and performance. By closely examining consequential business decisions made by key executives, this book offers a better understanding of business performance and recommendations for improved business practices. Through the use of case studies and interviews with business leaders based on 17 theorized measures of performance, this breakthrough study not only clarifies the impact of decisions on business performance, but also defines and distinguishes decisions that lead to successful and unsuccessful performance. Recommendations are made to optimize decision making for businesses of all sizes and projections about the future of decision making and performance are provided. This book can be used both as a reference source for academic researchers and students seeking further research on the subject, and as a practical guide for leaders and business professionals seeking advancement and better decision making within the industry.

Making Hope Happen (Paperback): Shane J. Lopez Making Hope Happen (Paperback)
Shane J. Lopez
R476 R393 Discovery Miles 3 930 Save R83 (17%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this practical guide to the anatomy of hope and how to harness its incredible power in your own life, a leading psychologist shines a light on one of the most powerful, and most misunderstood, emotional forces in our lives (Daniel Pink, author of Drive).
Some people manage to bounce back quickly from setbacks, to lead happy, healthy, productive lives, no matter their circumstances. These people have found a way to make good things happen even when luck isn't on their side. The secret ingredient they use to transform their lives, it turns out, is hope.
Using discoveries from the largest study of hopeful people ever conducted, Shane J. Lopez, PhD, the world's preeminent expert on hope (Sonja Lyubomirsky, author of The How of Happiness), reveals that hope is not just an emotion but an essential life tool. Hope is a leading indicator of success in relationships, academics, career, and business, and with Making Hope Happen, you can measure your level of hope and learn how to increase, use, and share it. In addition, Lopez shares the uplifting stories of real people who have created hope in their own lives and communities, from a CEO who befriended a curious nine-year-old to a college student who is thriving after two heart transplants.
Praised as thoughtful and pragmatic (Publishers Weekly), Making Hope Happen is for anyone seeking a better future--for themselves, for their business, or for the world. The message is clear: Hope is a choice. Hope can be learned. Hope is contagious. Hope can change your life.

A Posthumous History of Jose Marti - The Apostle and his Afterlife (Hardcover): Alfred J. Lopez A Posthumous History of Jose Marti - The Apostle and his Afterlife (Hardcover)
Alfred J. Lopez
R4,307 Discovery Miles 43 070 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A Posthumous History of Jose Marti: The Apostle and His Afterlife focuses on Marti's posthumous legacy and his lasting influence on succeeding generations of Cubans on the island and abroad. Over 120 years after his death on a Cuban battlefield in 1895, Marti studies have long been the contested property of opposing sides in an ongoing ideological battle. Both the Cuban nation-state, which claims Marti as a crucial inspiration for its Marxist revolutionary government, and diasporic communities in the US who honor Marti as a figure of hope for the Cuban nation-in-exile, insist on the centrality of his words and image for their respective visions of Cuban nationhood. The book also explores more recent scholarship that has reassessed Marti's literary, cultural, and ideological value, allowing us to read him beyond the Havana-Miami axis toward engagement with a broader historical and geographical tableau. Marti has thus begun to outgrow his mutually-reinforcing cults in Cuba and the diaspora, to assume his true significance as a hemispheric and global writer and thinker.

A Treasure to be Shared - Understanding Anglicanorum coetibus (Paperback): Walter Oxley, Ulrich Rhode A Treasure to be Shared - Understanding Anglicanorum coetibus (Paperback)
Walter Oxley, Ulrich Rhode; Bishop Steven J. Lopes, Cardinal Luis Ladaria
R1,053 Discovery Miles 10 530 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A Treasure to Be Shared is intended to promote a more widespread knowledge of the Apostolic Constitution Anglicanorum coetibus, promulgated by Pope Benedict XVI in 2009. The Apostolic Constitution provided for Personal Ordinariates for Anglicans entering into full communion with the Catholic Church. On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Apostolic Constitution, an academic symposium in the year 2019 sponsored by the Pontifical Gregorian University and the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, provided historical, liturgical, canonical and ecumenical perspectives on the fruits of the Apostolic Constitution for the wider Church. The hope is that the reader will see the Personal Ordinariates of The Chair of Saint Peter in the United States and Canada, Our Lady of Walsingham in Great Britain and Our Lady of the Southern Cross in Australia as a gift to the Church, and a treasure to be shared by all.

Economies of Death - Economic logics of killable life and grievable death (Paperback): Patricia J. Lopez, Kathryn A Gillespie Economies of Death - Economic logics of killable life and grievable death (Paperback)
Patricia J. Lopez, Kathryn A Gillespie
R1,288 Discovery Miles 12 880 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Economies of Death: Economic Logics of Killable Life and Grievable Death examines the economic logic involved in determining whose lives and deaths come to matter and why. Drawing from eight distinct case studies focused on the killability and grievability of certain humans, animals, and environmental systems, this book advances an intersectional theory of economies of death. A key feature of late-modern capitalism is its tendency to economically order certain human and nonhuman lives and environments, while appropriating and commodifying certain bodies and spaces in the process. Spanning the social sciences and humanities in its contributions and scope, each chapter shows how living beings and places are stripped down to the calculus of their end, with profound ethical and political implications for these entities and the world around them. From the genocide in Cambodia to the way some animals are considered 'pets' and others 'food'; from September 11, 2001 and Afghanistan to the politics of redemption for prisoners and ex-racehorses in Kentucky, these case studies draw from and develop an enriched understanding of bio- and necropolitics, posthumanism, killability and grievability. In drawing together the objectification of humans, animals and environments (and the power-laden hierarchies that maintain this objectification), this volume highlights how death across these subjects informs and responds to broader geo-economic processes. This book aims to examine the reach of economies of death across such diverse subjects, challenging readers to consider the every-day calculus they make in determining whose lives mean more and why.

Maria J. Lopez, Paula Martin Salvan, Gerardo Rodriguez-Salas
R1,296 Discovery Miles 12 960 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

New Perspectives on Community and the Modernist Subject: Finite, Singular, Exposed offers new approaches to the modernist subject and its relation to community. With a non-exclusive focus on narrative, the essays included provide innovative and theoretically informed readings of canonical modernist authors, including: James, Conrad, Joyce, Woolf, Lawrence, Mansfield, Stein, Barnes and Faulkner (instead of Eliot), as well as of non-canonical and late modernists Stapledon, Rhys, Beckett, Isherwood, and Baldwin (instead of Marsden). This volume examines the context of new dialectico-metaphysical approaches to subjectivity and individuality and of recent philosophical debate on community encouraged by critics such as Alain Badiou, Jean-Luc Nancy, Maurice Blanchot, Giorgio Agamben, Roberto Esposito and Jacques Derrida, among others, of which a fresh re-definition of the modernist subject and community remains to be made, one that is likely to enrich the field of "new Modernist studies". This volume will fill this gap, presenting a re-definition of the subject by complementing community-oriented approaches to modernist fiction through a dialectical counterweight that underlines a conception of the modernist subject as finite, singular and exposed, and its relation to inorganic and inoperative communities.

Antonio Alarcon, Franc Forstneric, Francisco J Lopez
R3,768 Discovery Miles 37 680 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This monograph offers the first systematic treatment of the theory of minimal surfaces in Euclidean spaces by complex analytic methods, many of which have been developed in recent decades as part of the theory of Oka manifolds (the h-principle in complex analysis). It places particular emphasis on the study of the global theory of minimal surfaces with a given complex structure. Advanced methods of holomorphic approximation, interpolation, and homotopy classification of manifold-valued maps, along with elements of convex integration theory, are implemented for the first time in the theory of minimal surfaces. The text also presents newly developed methods for constructing minimal surfaces in minimally convex domains of Rn, based on the Riemann-Hilbert boundary value problem adapted to minimal surfaces and holomorphic null curves. These methods also provide major advances in the classical Calabi-Yau problem, yielding in particular minimal surfaces with the conformal structure of any given bordered Riemann surface. Offering new directions in the field and several challenging open problems, the primary audience of the book are researchers (including postdocs and PhD students) in differential geometry and complex analysis. Although not primarily intended as a textbook, two introductory chapters surveying background material and the classical theory of minimal surfaces also make it suitable for preparing Masters or PhD level courses.

Michael L. Wehmeyer, Karrie A Shogren, Todd D. Little, Shane J. Lopez
R5,258 Discovery Miles 52 580 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume examines the developmental aspects of the general psychological construct of self-determination. The term refers to self- (vs. other-) caused action-to people acting volitionally-as based on their own will. Research conducted in the fields of psychology and education shows the importance of self-determination to adolescent development and positive adult outcomes. The first part of this volume presents an overview of theories and historical antecedents of the construct. It looks at the role of self-determination in major theories of human agentic behavior and of adolescent development and individuation. The second part of the volume examines the developmental origins and the trajectory of self-determination in childhood, adolescence, and adulthood, and looks as aging aspects. The next part presents studies on the evolutionary aspects, individual differences and healthy psychological development. The last part of the book covers the development of causal and agentic capability.

Francisco J. Lopez Lubian, Jose Esteves
R1,070 Discovery Miles 10 700 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

An in-depth examination of the concept of value in a digital world, an analysis of a range of digital business models and a framework for assessing the value of digital businesses. Assessing the value of traditional business was easy. There are hard, well tested metrics and tangible, measurable assets you can literally kick the tyres of. But how do you measure the value of something that consists of little more than bits of information, brand awareness and a compelling idea? In the winner takes all digital world how do you know if this idea is one that will attract billions of dedicated users or a few thousand fleeting trialists? And, most importantly, how do you assess whether any given business model is robust enough to make billions or flawed in a way that will lose millions? Lopez Lubian and Esteves look at what economic value means in a digital world, and argue for a shift from traditional value metrics to digital value metrics. Through high profile case studies they examine the process of valuation in the digital world - examining the challenges of making objective judgments from subjective information and how to assess the value of data. Next they analyse in depth a number of different digital business models from the perspective of delivering value to investors, stakeholders and society at large. Finally they present a framework model for assessing value in digital business.

Gunter Obe; Contributions by E. E. Castilla, R. Drouin, J. Filipski, E. Gebhart, …
R2,970 Discovery Miles 29 700 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The new field of applied genetic research, genetic toxicology and mutation research investigates the muta- genicity and cancerogenicity of chemicals and other agents. Permanent changes in genes and chromosomes, or genome mutations, can be induced by a plethora of agents, including ionizing and nonionizing radiations, chemicals, and viruses. Mutagenesis research has two aims: (1) to understand the molecular mechanisms leading to mutations, and (2) to prevent a thoughtless introduction of mutagenic agents into our environment. Both aspects, namely, basic and applied, will be treated in the new series Advances in Mutagenesis Research.

Mathematics Education in Different Cultural Traditions- A Comparative Study of East Asia and the West - The 13th ICMI Study (Paperback, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2006)
Frederick Koon-Shing Leung, Klaus D. Graf, Francis J. Lopez-Real
R6,622 Discovery Miles 66 220 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The fundamental idea of the ICMI Study 13 is outlined as follows: Education in any social environment is influenced in many ways by the traditions of these environments. As a consequence the results of such education will naturally differ with different traditions in different environments. Indeed, this is necessary since one of the intentions of education is to support the traditional continuity of structure and function of a special environment.

On the other hand, today we are observing a growing interdependence between environments like regions, states, countries, and different cultural areas of the world. In many respects they have to rely on corresponding or equivalent standards of education, and differences can cause irritations.

In mathematics education also, taking an international and intercultural point of view, we face this split phenomenon of difference and correspondence, linked with the perpetual challenge to improve the quality of mathematics education. A study attempting a comparison between mathematics education in different traditions will be helpful to understand this phenomenon in detail and exploit it for the sake of mathematics education.

The Study Volume will reflect the structure of the conference in four sections of revised papers, integrating insights, results and implications from the comparative discussions. To achieve this revision and integration, section editors have initiated vivid interaction with and between authors of the four working groups. The editors (Leung, Lopez, Graf) expect the Volume to be published in the series of ICMI studies by Springer in spring 2005.

Robert J. Lopez
R1,572 Discovery Miles 15 720 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Modern software tools like Maple have the potential to alter radically the way mathematics is taught, learned, and done. Bringing such tools into the classroom during lectures, assignments, and examinations means that new ways oflooking at mathematics can becomepermanent fixtures ofthe curriculum. It is universal access that will make a software-based approach to mathematics become the norm. In 1988, with NSF funding under an III grant, I had the opportunity to bring Maple into the calculus classroom at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. Since then a new curriculum based on the availability ofcomputer algebra systems has evolved at RHIT and in my own courses. This volume contains a record of some of the insights gained into pedagogy using Maple in calculus. The activities and ideas captured in these Maple worksheets reflect concepts in calculus imple mented in Maple. There is an overt message to the reader that carries with it a side effect. However, it is possible that for one reader the side effect is the message and the message is the side effect I had intended to put before my audience examples extracted from my Maple based curriculum to entice a wider acceptance ofthe benefits of making a computer algebra system become the basis of a revised calculus syllabus. By examples I had hoped to demonstrate the "rightness" of using software tools for teaching and learning calculus."

The Maple Summer Workshop and Symposium, MSWS '94, reflects the growing commu nity of Maple users around the world. This volume contains the contributed papers. A careful inspection of author affiliations will reveal that they come from North America, Europe, and Australia. In fact, fifteen come from the United States, two from Canada, one from Australia, and nine come from Europe. Of European papers, two are from Ger many, two are from the Netherlands, two are from Spain, and one each is from Switzerland, Denmark, and the United Kingdom. More important than the geographical diversity is the intellectual range of the contributions. We begin to see in this collection of works papers in which Maple is used in an increasingly flexible way. For example, there is an application in computer science that uses Maple as a tool to create a new utility. There is an application in abstract algebra where Maple has been used to create new functionalities for computing in a rational function field. There are applications to geometrical optics, digital signal processing, and experimental design."

Jose Marti - A Revolutionary Life (Paperback): Alfred J. Lopez Jose Marti - A Revolutionary Life (Paperback)
Alfred J. Lopez
R1,073 Discovery Miles 10 730 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Jose Marti (1853-1895) was the founding hero of Cuban independence. In all of modern Latin American history, arguably only the "Great Liberator" Simon Bolivar rivals Marti in stature and legacy. Beyond his accomplishments as a revolutionary and political thinker, Marti was a giant of Latin American letters, whose poetry, essays, and journalism still rank among the most important works of the region. Today he is revered by both the Castro regime and the Cuban exile community, whose shared veneration of the "apostle" of freedom has led to his virtual apotheosis as a national saint. In Jose Marti: A Revolutionary Life, Alfred J. Lopez presents the definitive biography of the Cuban patriot and martyr. Writing from a nonpartisan perspective and drawing on years of research using original Cuban and U.S. sources, including materials never before used in a Marti biography, Lopez strips away generations of mythmaking and portrays Marti as Cuba's greatest founding father and one of Latin America's literary and political giants, without suppressing his public missteps and personal flaws. In a lively account that engrosses like a novel, Lopez traces the full arc of Marti's eventful life, from his childhood and adolescence in Cuba, to his first exile and subsequent life in Spain, Mexico City, and Guatemala, through his mature revolutionary period in New York City and much-mythologized death in Cuba on the battlefield at Dos Rios. The first major biography of Marti in over half a century and the first ever in English, Jose Marti is the most substantial examination of Marti's life and work ever published.

R4,512 Discovery Miles 45 120 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides a forum for experts to present their latest research in disruptive technologies, promoting knowledge transfer. Due to the important advances in technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data, the Internet of things, or bioinformatics produced in recent years, it is necessary to conduct a thorough review of current ethical patterns. One of the research fields that is in full expansion and with a broad future is technology ethics or tech ethics. Just a few years ago, this type of research was a small part, and they did not have too many technology researchers involved. At present, due to the explosion of new applications of artificial intelligence, their problems and their legal barriers have flourished innumerable initiatives, declarations, principles, guides, and analyses focused on measuring the social impact of these systems and on the development of a more ethical technology. It is, therefore, a problem that needs to be addressed from an academic and multidisciplinary point of view, where experts in ethics and behavior work together with experts in new and disruptive technologies. The international conference "Disruptive Technologies Tech Ethics and Artificial Intelligence" (DITTET 2022) provides a forum to present and discuss the latest scientific and technical advances and their implications in the field of ethics. It provides a unique opportunity to bring together experts in different fields, academics, and professionals to exchange their experience in the development and deployment of disruptive technologies, artificial intelligence, and their ethical problems.
