Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the
1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly
expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable,
high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.
This study examines the utility of a public probity-focused
approach to understanding citizen disaffection with those in public
life. This work shows unequivocally that perceptions of public
probity are coherent, substantively meaningful, and, crucially,
that they do matter for our understanding of citizen disaffection.
In doing so, this book makes a strong case for the importance of
deeper and more detailed research into this area. Making use of
major, newly available datasets, this study presents new
substantive findings about the causes of political perceptions and
the consequences of political realities. This book is important
reading for students and scholars of public opinion, political
corruption and political integrity.
This collection of essays on politics, the performing arts, and
various forms of activist performance uses the framework of
performance studies to explore the engagements of political
resistance, public practice and performance media. It places these
engagements on various scales of performance production within
local, national and transnational structures of neoliberal and
liberal government and power. Performance has always been a way of
articulating the conditions of contemporary society, and of
pointing through the body of the performance to ways of defining,
understanding and changing those conditions. Throughout these
essays performance takes place in the environments of heightened
everyday action, the aesthetic and cultural activity of the
performing arts, and in the activist performance of political
commitment. These trajectories in performance studies delineate the
way people identify themselves and communicate with one another,
both in attempts to change the structures of governance they
experience, and vitally, alongside those structures.
Until now no overview of the Quaternary deposits of northeastern
Europe has been available. This book fills the gap. It presents the
state of research on Quaternary stratigraphy and geology, with
emphasis on glacial deposits, discusses the general scientific
ideas and gives an overview of the methods of investigation, some
of which have rarely been applied elsewhere. It has become apparent
that the region covered has many environmental problems, and a
proper understanding of the Quaternary deposits is a basic
requirement for dealing with them. The same is true for civil
engineering. In the formerly glaciated areas almost all
construction sites for roads and houses will encounter glacial
deposits. This volume provides an authoritative and fascinating
overview for anyone planning to venture into this field. In its 53
regional chapters the book covers Finland, Estonia, Latvia,
Lithuania, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Poland, the Czech Republic and
eastern Germany. From the text it becomes clear that not all the
stratigraphical schemes are yet fully compatible or comprehensible.
There can be no doubt, however, that the east was subjected to very
extensive ice advances during the earlier Pleistocene. Also, in
contrast to western Europe, there was a significant Early
Weichselian ice advance, although not as extensive as the last,
Late Weichselian event. The book is illustrated by 421 figures and
74 colour plates (mostly photographs). There are 23 tables, a
detailed index and a list of over 1000 references, providing a
unique collection of northeastern European geoscience literature,
much of which has so far escaped the attention of western
scientists. The volume, composed of contributions by 60 scientists,
completes the trilogy on glacial deposits of northern Europe.
Together with its two companion volumes, the Glacial deposits in
North-West Europe and the Glacial Deposits in Great Britain and
Ireland, it represents an invaluable source of information for the
geoscientist, the advanced student or the amateur.
Featuring current resources used to discover new legume family
genes and to understand genes and their interactions, Legume
Genomics: Methods and Protocols provides techniques from expert
researchers to study these plants that are so vitally important for
food, feed, human nutrition, bioenergy, and industrial purposes.
This detailed volume covers genome characterization and analysis,
transcriptome analysis and miRNA identification/analysis, forward
and reverse genetics, molecular markers, as well as transformation
strategies used to investigate gene function and many other topics.
Written in the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology
series format, chapters include introductions to their respective
topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents,
step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and tips
on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Authoritative and
useful, Legume Genomics: Methods and Protocols aims to serve plant
molecular biologists, molecular breeders, plant physiologists and
biochemists, developmental biologists, and those interested in
plant-microbe interactions.
This book features 18 fashion-focused pieces for beaders and
jewelers of all skill levels to make. Techniques combine
traditional bead and wirework with feathers, fabric, chain and
leather. It offers beautiful and inspirational photography
throughout. You can learn how to use basic beading skills combined
with wire, fabrics and a range of materials to make fashion jewelry
from the comfort of your own home. This innovative book focuses on
current fashion trends and shows you how to make stunning large
statement pieces. There are projects for all levels, from complete
beginners to experienced jewellers looking to diversify their
skills. Chapters include: statement necklaces; designer earrings;
couture bracelets; blinging rings; show-stopping sets
This 2006 book is based on two longitudinal studies of behavior
development, both conducted in Finland, a living laboratory setting
for longitudinal research. Much of the book reports results from a
longitudinal study begun in Jyvaskyla, Finland, in 1968, when its
participants were school children. This longitudinal study is
complemented by two Finnish twin-family studies, with parallel
measures and overlapping aims, to yield insights into genetic and
environmental sources of variation in early development and later
outcomes. An array of findings from the two sets of longitudinal
studies are presented, set within a theoretical framework of
socioemotional development, and focused on both individual and
familial predictors of health-related outcomes from childhood to
early adulthood. Many contributors to this edited volume represent
a second-tier of Finnish-USA collaborators. They analyzed data from
the longitudinal studies as part of their advanced training, and
their contributions to the book report results of such analyses.

Originally published in 1994 this volume includes contributions
from environmental scientists, consultants and research workers.
The incidence and effects of the phenomenon of acid rain in the
late 1970s, 80s and early 1990s , as well as certain remedies, are
discussed at length. The roles of vehicles and power stations are
examined in detail and legal aspects of curbing acid rain are
considered.
Originally published in 1973 and based on papers published in The
International Journal of Environmental Studies, this book discusses
the impact of road vehicles on the environment. Particular stress
is laid on the design of towns and vehicles, economic problems
associated with these, the responsibility of planners and the
integration of transport planning and environmental planning at
local, regional and national levels. Subsequent sections cover the
science of accident research and legislation, particularly dealing
with global pollution control. Many of the problems discussed
remain as pressing today as when this book was first published.
Improving and managing universal services of water and sanitation
in a holistic manner is critical to achieving the Sustainable
Development Goals, and addressing the needs of millions of people
around the world. Ensuring access to water services is a key factor
in working towards the SDGs, and water service delivery planning
can support utilities in improving provision of these services. A
service delivery plan identifies the actions required and
associated costs for achieving a defined level of water services
delivery over a defined period of time. This publications is a
guideline or how-to manual on preparing water service delivery
plans with a focus on small to medium sized organised water
utilities having with approximately 5,000 to over 100,000
connections mainly in areas with limited capacity and resources.
The manual is simplified enough to ensure that these utilities are
able to move from a situation where they are struggling to deliver
water services to where basic service levels in terms of water
quality, quantity, accessibility, reliability, affordability, and
acceptability are met. Meeting these basic service levels provides
a strong foundation for the utility to progressively move up the
ladder of delivering improved services.
