This book forms the Proceedings of the International Seminar held by the Institution of Structural Engineers and the Building Research Establishment in Brighton in April 1993. It brings together contributions from 15 countries on recent innovations in building and construction. Developments in the design of structures, improvements in existing materials and the introduction of new materials have historically gone hand-in-hand. The limited range of materials available for construction at any one time dictates the practical range of structural form and performance. It follows that current design methods, materials and construction techniques may not be suitable to meet the demands of particular applications. The introduction of a new material, or new practice may move the performance of the construction away from that which is reasonably well understood in the existing population of structures. By so doing, it may also lead to behaviour which cannot be adequately predicted by the current design methods. Developments such as these therefore bring risks as well as benefits. Innovations required to meet the clients' needs can also have a profound effect on the built environment. It is i
Corrosion of steel reinforcement in concrete is a major problem, with serious implications for structural integrity and durability. Bridges and marine structures are particularly susceptible due to the more chemically aggressive environmental conditions that prevail. Hence there is a need to examine the durability, strength characteristics and suitability of alternative materials to steel reinforcement. This book provides a thorough overview of recent developments and applications in this area of growing importance. This book should be of interest to structural and civil engineers involved in the design and construction of concrete structures; materials researchers investigating durability and strength of reinforcing materials; and advanced students in these fields.
Lightweight aggregate concrete is undergoing something of a renaissance. Although this material has been available for many years, only now is it being used more widely. The volume of structural aggregate concrete used each year is increasing dramatically. Lower structural weight, better fire resistence, use of waste for aggregate, lower costs for aggregate: all these factors are contributing to the rapid increase in the use of acceptance of structural lightweight aggregate concrete. This book provides a comprehensive review of this growing field from an international perspective. This book should be of interest to structural and civil engineers involved in the design and construction of concrete structures; researchers in concrete materials design and performance.
Independent, practical guidance on the structural design of polymer composites is provided for the first time in this book. Structural designers familiar with design of conventional structural materials such as steel and concrete will be able to use it to design a broad range of polymeric composites for structural applications, using glass fibre reinforced plastic materials, components, connections and assemblies.
Designing for hazardous and abnormal loads has become an important requirement in the design process of most major buildings and civil engineering structures, ranging from tall buildings to bridges, power plants to harbour and coastal installations. This state-of-the-art volume was compiled by the Institution of Structural Engineers' informal study group Model Analysis as a Design Tool and City University's Structures Research Centre. It contains a series of papers on the design and analysis of structures through full scale and numerical modelling including the crucial areas of hazard identification and risk assessment of structures. This book will be essential reading for civil and structural engineers, designers and researchers.

Words Unspoken begins with an angry and combative, yet heartfelt character, Jane O'Connor. She has been married to her husband Sam for seven glorious years, but their romance is at an irreconcilable halt. They haven't been intimate in months. Jane's frustrated. Sam's frustrated. And all they've managed to do is take their frustration out on each other. They've been fighting because Jane has a horrible secret. A secret she has kept hidden from those she loves. Although Sam knows her secret, it's the stimulus of their impending separation. Samantha O'Connor is Jane's sister-in-law. She is a twenty-four year old, ambitious law student, with love problems of her own. She has no idea what's going on between her brother, Sam, and his wife, Jane. She's too preoccupied with planning her mother's fiftieth birthday party, and unexpectedly reconnects with her first love. Amy Watson used to be a successful artist. Amy Watson used to be an inspirational art professor. Her students used to love and admire her. Now, her students are filing complaints with the Dean of Admissions. Her life is on a downward spiral and she has no idea how to turn her life around. And worst of all, she has been hearing voices ever since her husband passed away. These three women lives merge unexpectedly; and it turns out they have more in common than they think.
The Office of Scientific & Technical Information (OSTI), is a part of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) that houses research and development results from projects funded by the DOE. The information is generally an article, technical document, conference paper or dissertation. This is one of those publications.
Amy Watson has been searching for answers into her husband's and daughter's death for months, to no avail. Jane O'Connor, a woman she once foolishly called a friend, a woman who callously said her husband had it coming, a woman who she now suspects is responsible for their death, is nowhere to be found. The police aren't helping, but she refuses to give up hope. With the help of her new boyfriend, Scott Pearson, a man she met while grieving the loss of her family, she begins to look into her husband's past, and soon starts to discover his dark secrets. Will Amy find Jane? Bring her back, and make her pay? Or, is it too late...
