This book approaches Hobbes's philosophy from a completely new
perspective: his creativity. Creativity is the production of
something which experts consider to be original, valuable and of
high quality. James Hamilton explores Hobbes's creativity by
focusing on his development, personality, and motivation in the
context of his culture and environment, and on the ways in which he
thought creatively, as inferred from his writings. Identification
of the ideas which Hobbes drew upon is an important part of the
study for two reasons. First, they are necessary to determine which
of Hobbes's ideas and theories are original and which are not.
Second, analysis of his creativity requires an understanding of the
ideas from which he drew. Hamilton concludes that Hobbes became a
great philosopher because of his creative virtuosity.
2014 BMA Medical Book Awards Highly Commended in Internal Medicine

some competing books. Focus is on the haematology patient and on
the practical aspects of the subject. Makes use of the attractive
features of the ICT series - double page spreads, lots of colour
illustrations, summary boxes. Updating to take account of recenty
developments in stem cell biology. Increased emphasis on genomic
and proteomic techniques in the diagnosis of haematological
malignancy. Use of new imaging techniques including MRI and PET.
Description of advances in treatment of leukaemia and lymphoma and
in diagnosis and management of patients with thrombophilia and
venous thrombosis. Development of new antimicrobial agents in
management of immunosuppressed patients with infection. New double

This comprehensive annotated bibliography reviews nearly 500
English-language studies published between 1915 and 2001 that
examine the depiction of ethnic, racial, and national groups as
portrayed in United States feature films from the inception of
cinema through the present. Coverage includes books, reference
works, book chapters within larger works, and individual essays
from collections and anthologies. Concise annotations provide
content summaries; unique features; major films and filmmakers
discussed; and useful information on related titles, purpose, and
intended readership. The studies included range from specialized
scholarly treatises to popular illustrated books for general
readers, making DEGREESIProjecting Ethnicity and Race DEGREESR an
invaluable resource for researchers interested in ethnic and racial
film imagery.
Entries are arranged alphabetically by title for easy access,
while four separate indexes make the work simple to navigate by
author, subject, gender, race, ethnic group, nationality, country,
religion, film title, filmmaker, performer, or theme. Although the
majority of studies published examine images of African Americans,
Hispanic Americans, Native Americans, Asian Americans, and Asians
in film, the volume contains studies of groups including Africans,
Arabs, the British, Canadians, South Sea Islanders, Tibetans,
Buddhists, and Muslims--making it a unique reference book with a
wide range of uses for a wide range of scholars.
This book presents recent advances in quality measures in data
mining.
"The Art of Theater" argues for the recognition of theatrical
performance as an art form independent of dramatic writing.
Identifies the elements that make a performance a work of art
Looks at the competing views of the text-performance relationships
An important and original contribution to the aesthetics and
philosophy of theater
Knowledge Discovery and Measures of Interest is a reference book
for knowledge discovery researchers, practitioners, and students.
The knowledge discovery researcher will find that the material
provides a theoretical foundation for measures of interest in data
mining applications where diversity measures are used to rank
summaries generated from databases. The knowledge discovery
practitioner will find solid empirical evidence on which to base
decisions regarding the choice of measures in data mining
applications. The knowledge discovery student in a senior
undergraduate or graduate course in databases and data mining will
find the book is a good introduction to the concepts and techniques
of measures of interest. In Knowledge Discovery and Measures of
Interest, we study two closely related steps in any knowledge
discovery system: the generation of discovered knowledge; and the
interpretation and evaluation of discovered knowledge. In the
generation step, we study data summarization, where a single
dataset can be generalized in many different ways and to many
different levels of granularity according to domain generalization
graphs. In the interpretation and evaluation step, we study
diversity measures as heuristics for ranking the interestingness of
the summaries generated. The objective of this work is to introduce
and evaluate a technique for ranking the interestingness of
discovered patterns in data. It consists of four primary goals: To
introduce domain generalization graphs for describing and guiding
the generation of summaries from databases. To introduce and
evaluate serial and parallel algorithms that traverse the domain
generalization space described by the domain generalization graphs.
To introduce and evaluate diversity measures as heuristic measures
of interestingness for ranking summaries generated from databases.
To develop the preliminary foundation for a theory of
interestingness within the context of ranking summaries generated
from databases. Knowledge Discovery and Measures of Interest is
suitable as a secondary text in a graduate level course and as a
reference for researchers and practitioners in industry.
Pesticides are now accepted as an integral part of modern
agricultural production. This book provides analysis of the steps
taken by national and international bodies working towards a
cohesive global strategy for evaluating the safety of residues in
food that result from approved pesticide uses. Also described is
the role of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), World
Health Organization (WHO) and Codex Alimentarius in developing
standards that protect the health of the consumers and ensure fair
practices in the food trade. It goes on to look at the promotion of
good agricultural practice in the use of pesticides and the need
for control in their practical use. These include sampling, testing
the compliance of marketed products against legal limits and
verifying the effectiveness of the safety-based regulatory
measures. This is a specialist book for those looking to go into
the field of international food safety, for students and lecturers
studying the topic, for policy makers working on public health and
agricultural issues, and personnel responsible for taking samples
and performing the analysis of pesticide formulations and residues.
The essays in this collection examine religion, politics, and

and Scottish anti-abolitionists.
Smart women don’t grow older. They grow younger. A book of hope,
Younger Next Year for Women shows you how to become functionally
younger for the next five to ten years, and continue to live
thereafter with newfound vitality. Learn how the Younger Next Year
plan of following “Harry’s Rules”—a program of exercise,
diet, and maintaining emotional connections—will not only help
you turn back your physical biological clock, but will improve
memory, cognition, mood, and more. In two new chapters, prominent
neurologist Allan Hamilton explains how the program directly
affects your brain—all the way down to the cellular level—while
Chris Crowley, in his inimitable voice, gives the personal side of
the story. In other words, how to live brilliantly for the three
decades or more after menopause. The results will be amazing.
