This is the only book of its kind devoted to exploring contentious politics from a North American perspective including protests, social movements, transnational contention, and emergent regional governance processes between Canadian, U.S. and Mexican state and civil society actors.
This book explores the PhD experience as never before and provides a "survival guide" for current and prospective PhD students. The book investigates why mental health issues are so common among the postgraduate population, going beyond the statistics, looking at lived experience of both the author and as well as current PhD students, who have found balancing mental wellness with the PhD endeavour challenging. The author discusses tips and tricks she wished she had known at the start of her PhD process for managing mental health, such as managing imposter feelings, prioritising workload, and self-care strategies to help others throughout their own journey. The book goes beyond typical mental health discussions (where the focus for improving mental health is placed on PhD students to become "more resilient") and explores some of the often unspoken environmental factors that can impact mental health. These include the PhD student-supervisor relationship, the pressure to publish, and deep systemic problems in academia, such as racism, bullying and harassment. Finally, the book is a call to action, providing tangible improvements from the author's perspective that university institutions can make to ensure that academia is a place for all to thrive.
The presence of oriented features in images often conveys important information about the scene or the objects contained; the analysis of oriented patterns is an important task in the general framework of image understanding. As in many other applications of computer vision, the general framework for the understanding of oriented features in images can be divided into low- and high-level analysis. In the context of the study of oriented features, low-level analysis includes the detection of oriented features in images; a measure of the local magnitude and orientation of oriented features over the entire region of analysis in the image is called the orientation field. High-level analysis relates to the discovery of patterns in the orientation field, usually by associating the structure perceived in the orientation field with a geometrical model. This book presents an analysis of several important methods for the detection of oriented features in images, and a discussion of the phase portrait method for high-level analysis of orientation fields. In order to illustrate the concepts developed throughout the book, an application is presented of the phase portrait method to computer-aided detection of architectural distortion in mammograms. A scholarly edition of a work by Anthony Munday. The edition presents an authoritative text, together with an introduction, commentary notes, and scholarly apparatus.
This text provides a practical introduction to peak flow measurement, its indications, uses and benefits, and associated problems.;Asthma is a very common condition affecting at least 12 per cent of schoolchildren and 5 per cent of adults. Recent guidelines proposed by the British Thoracic Society for the management of chronic and acute asthma recommend the domiciliary use of the peak flow meter to assist doctors in the management of the condition, as well as helping the patient manage his or her own asthma flow. This illustrated guide gives the doctor instructions on the correct use of the meter as well as providing information on the benefits and limitations of the test. Worked case histories and "real" examples of classical peak flow histories can be found throughout the text. It should be of use to respiratory physicians, general practitioners, practice nurses, physiotherapists and other health professionals involved in the day-to-day care of asthma patients.
