From 1941-1944 Leningrad saw by far the largest-scale famine ever to occur in a developed society. This book examines the nature and consequences of the extreme conditions created by the German blockade of Leningrad between September 1941 and January 1944. Using declassified documents from Party and State archives in Moscow and St Petersburg and interviews with survivors the authors have produced the most informed and detailed analysis to date of the impact of the siege on the lives and the health of the people of Leningrad.

"Retired? Do you have the urge to travel but don't quite know where
to start? I'm here to answer your questions and help you on your
way. After my retirement, I started my adventures with a trip to
the heart of Kenya, camping out in the bush, listening to the lions
roar from my tent. Was I nervous at first? You bet But the more I
travelled, the more my confidence grew. You may have similar
reservations about taking your first trip, but with the help of
this book, I'm confident you'll experiencing incredible new places
and new cultures before you know it Peter Barber is a well-seasoned
traveller. The vast majority of Peter's trips have taken place
since he retired in his mid 50's in 2006. He has travelled
extensively throughout Africa and Europe. He has not only travelled
for pleasure but also followed his passion and volunteered in
wildlife conservation in Kenya and Namibia. He also developed a
second career as a wildlife photographer with his photos being used
in calendars and books. This blend of travel for pleasure, as well
as volunteering later in life gives Peter a unique understanding
and appreciation for the roadblocks facing the mature traveller. I
wrote this book because I see many people of my age sitting at home
seemingly just passing time; not because they are lazy or because
they don't care, but simply because they don't know how to take
that first step to get up off the couch and get going. I believe
what you will learn by reading this book will give you the
confidence to take that all-important first step and taking the
trip of your dreams. The format for this book is a little unusual
but I hope it will make it easier for you to use. The book is
organized around the answers to your important travel questions. I
designed the book this way to give you the feel as if we were
sitting together over a cup of coffee and we were discussing all
the questions you need answered. I hope this book will help remove
any obstacles you may have concerning starting your travel
adventures later in life. Lets GET UP AND GET GOING together A few
years ago, I was having trouble deciding if a Canadian Battlefield
tour to Europe was right for my wife and me. After talking to
Peter, we decided to put our doubts aside and go. We had a
fantastic time and we are currently making plans for a third visit
to Europe. Thanks Peter - Dennis Chawrun, Victoria BC, Canada My
wife and I had often thought of travelling to Africa, but we never
seemed to get beyond talking about it. Then Peter told us about his
trips and gave us some practical advise on how to get beyond
talking and actually planning and taking the trip. We went on a
safari to South Africa and we loved it. We recently enjoyed a river
cruise in Europe. Thanks for the advice Peter. - Rudy Nielsen,
Vancouver
Perception is about the reception, selection, acquisition,
transformation and organization of sensory information. This book,
originally published in 1976, discusses a number of aspects of
human perception within a theoretical framework in which man is
considered as a processor of information. The main emphasis is on
visual perception with particular reference to looking and pattern
recognition; selective listening and speech recognition are also
discussed.
Economists and the Economy seeks to explain how economic theories
are formed in response to specific incidents affecting economic
events. The work covers both major historical events, such as the
English Civil War, the Industrial Revolution, and the Great
Depression, and intellectual developments in economic thought.
Among the theories examined are neoclassical growth theory and the
Harrod-Domar model.
More so than had any of his predecessors in the White House, Franklin D. Roosevelt drew heavily on the thinking of economists as he sought to combat the Great Depression, to mobilize the American economy for war, and to chart a new order for the postwar world. Designs within Disorder is an inquiry into the way divergent analytic perspectives competed for official favor and the manner in which the President opted to pick and choose among them when formulating economic policies.
Law professor and civil rights activist Geeta N. Kapur provides
analysis and commentary on the story of systemic racism in
leadership, scholarship, and organizational foundations at the
University of North Carolina. The University of North Carolina is
the oldest public university in the US, with the cornerstone for
the first dormitory, Old East, laid in 1793. At that ceremony, the
enslaved people who would literally build that structure were not
acknowledged; they were not even present. In fact, 158 years passed
before Black students were admitted to this university in Chapel
Hill, and it was another 66 years after that before students
forcibly removed the long-criticized Confederate "Silent Sam"
monument. Indeed, this university, revered in the state and the
nation, has been entwined with white supremacy and institutional
racism throughout its history-and the struggle continues today. To
Drink from the Well: The Struggle for Racial Equality at the
Nation's Oldest Public University explores the history of UNC by
exposing the plain and uncomfortable truth behind the storied brick
walkways, "historic" statuary, and picturesque covered well, the
icon of the campus. Law professor and civil rights activist Geeta
N. Kapur chronicles the racism within the university and traces its
insidious effects on students, faculty, and even the venerable
Tarheel sports programs. Kapur tells this story not as a historian,
but as a citizen speaking to her fellow citizens. She relies on the
historical record to tell her story, and where that record is
lacking, she elaborates on that record, augmenting and
deconstructing the standard chronology. Kapur explores both the
Chapel Hill campus and a parallel movement in nearby Durham, where
a growing Black middle class helped to create North Carolina
Central University, a historically Black public university.
