The authors examine youths' practices in digital culture affecting
social change, pedagogy, and creative learning practices. Knowledge
about these practices is discussed, in which learning, knowledge
sharing, distinct social contexts, pedagogical relationships, and
artistic creative inquiry are examined in diverse formal and
informal environments.
The Third Microquasar Workshop (or the 'Fifth' Workshop on Galactic
Relativ istic Jet Sources), was held in Granada, Andalucia (Spain)
on 11-13 September 2000. The aim of this workshop in Granada,
following the previous Microquasar Workshops in Greenbelt (1997)
and Paris (1998) and the Workshops on galactic sources with
relativistic jets in Jodrell Bank (1996) and Milton Keynes (1998),
was to focus on the theoretical and observational aspects of
microquasars. The study of microquasars, the sources in our Galaxy
displaying powerful re lativistic jets, is a rapidly advancing
field in astrophysics. The new instrumentation on ground (MERLIN,
SCUBA, VLA, VLT) and aboard satellites (ASCA, BSAX, ISO, IXAE and
RXTE) has provided important results, and much more is expected to
come from Chandra and XMM-Newton. In the further future, powerful
instru mentation will come online in the sub-mm (ALMA) and
gamma-rays (INTEG RAL), extending our coverage to important regions
for the study of microquasars. Energy transport via relativistic
jets is one of the most important physical mechan isms taking place
in compact objects. Large efforts have been devoted to properly
understand the disk-jet connection, and even the effects of
rotation or magnetic fields. Several new important advances have
been made recently, both from the point of view of the theoretical
treatment of jets and the different new observational tests."
As the civic engagement gap widens across lines of race, class, and
ethnicity, educators in today's urban schools must reconsider what
it means to teach for citizenship; however, few resources exist
that speak to their unique contexts. Teaching for Citizenship in
Urban Schools offers lessons and strategies that combines the power
of inquiry-driven teaching with a funds of knowledge approach to
capitalize on the lived civic experiences of urban youth and
children. Teaching for Citizenship in Urban Schools presents six
strategies for making civic and social studies education relevant
and engaging: using photovoice for social change, conducting
culturally responsive investigations of community, defining
American Black founders, enacting hip-hop pedagogy, employing
equity literacy to explore immigrant enclaves, and drawing on young
adult fiction to teach about police violence. Written by some of
the leading scholars in the field, each chapter includes an
overview of the strategy and lessons for both elementary and
secondary students. As a whole, these lessons draw on neighborhood
resources, facilitate cultural exchanges among students and
teachers, create community networks, and bridge schools and
communities in a shared mission of building a just and inclusive
democracy. This book is for anyone who values student-centered,
inquiry-driven, and culturally-sustaining pedagogies that foster a
deeper understanding of citizenship within a diverse democracy.

This book's purpose is to relate how the Quequechan River
influenced the development of Fall River, from its beginnings as a
Colonial village, through its emergence as a great cotton textile
manufacturing center.
Five days a week, seven-year-old Holly awakens promptly at six. She
ensures that her five-year-old sister is washed, fed and dressed,
and then she prepares breakfast for her single mother. With
military precision and a gut-wrenching sense of responsibility
beyond her years, Holly follows a strict regimen in an attempt to
avoid the wrath of her abusive mother. She never knows whether she
will encounter "nice mommy or mean mommy," and only when she and
her sister are safely at school does she begin to breathe
easily.
Holly's story is one of many that Dr. Anthony J. Castro relates in
this unique approach to sharing psychological insights and offering
guidelines for making difficult changes to tackle problems that
threaten our well-being. The theme of this insightful book is
"giving room." Weaving a tapestry of vignettes from patients'
intimate lives with excerpts from scientific studies and examples
from his own life, Dr. Castro demonstrates how all of us must learn
to give ourselves room to enter into the unknown and endure change.
Though change is often very hard, Dr. Castro shows through the
experiences of his patients that by giving room to ourselves we
unleash the potential for immense personal growth.
Some of his patients need to assert independence from their
parents; others must learn to develop a mutually respectful
marriage or to become wise parents. In all cases, Dr. Castro
underscores that only by making room for our own needs can we then
reach out to others to create healthy relationships. With a gift
for interlacing important insights with engrossing real-life
stories to illustrate salient points about growth and change, Dr.
Castro offers an enlightening, jargon-free narrative that will
encourage readers of all ages to take the time to create the
happiness they deserve.
