Multinational Enterprise and World Competition - A Comparative Study of the USA, Japan, the UK, Sweden and West Germany... Multinational Enterprise and World Competition - A Comparative Study of the USA, Japan, the UK, Sweden and West Germany (Hardcover)
J. Clegg
R4,008 Discovery Miles 40 080 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Multinational firms are often seen as controlling the secrets of industrial success, and conversely, as causing industrial decline. As a consequence their activites are the subject of intense debate. This study assesses the role of multinational enterprise in international competition - including trade and technology licensing - and analyses the profound implications that follow for policy formulation. This is the first book to use a systematic comparative approach, in which the experience of five major developed economies, the USA, Japan, the UK, Sweden and West Germany, are appraised using the framework of modern economic theory.

Artemia: Basic and Applied Biology (Hardcover, 2002 ed.): Th. J. Abatzopoulos, John Beardmore, J.S. Clegg, P. Sorgeloos Artemia: Basic and Applied Biology (Hardcover, 2002 ed.)
Th. J. Abatzopoulos, John Beardmore, J.S. Clegg, P. Sorgeloos
R5,983 Discovery Miles 59 830 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The objectives of this volume are to present an up-to-date (literature survey up to 2001) account of the biology of Artemia focusing particularly upon the major advances in knowledge and understanding achieved in the last fifteen or so years and emphasising the operational and functional linkage between the biological phenomena described and the ability of this unusual animal to thrive in extreme environments. Artemia is a genus of anostracan crustaceans, popularly known as brine shrimps. These animals are inhabitants of saline environments which are too extreme for the many species which readily predate them if opportunity offers. They are, thus, effectively inhabitants of extreme (hypersaline) habitats, but at the same time are able to tolerate physiologically large changes in salinity, ionic composition, temperature and oxygen tension. Brine shrimp are gener ally thought of as tropical and subtropical, but are also found in regions where temperatures are very low for substantial periods such as Tibet, Siberia and the Atacama desert. They have, thus, great powers of adaptation and are of interest for this capacity alone. The earliest scientific reference to brine shrimp is in 1756, when Schlosser reported their existence in the saltpans of Lymington, England. These saltpans no longer exist and brine shrimp are not found in Britain today. Later, Linnaeus named the brine shrimp Cancer salinus and later still, Leach used the name Artemia salina. The strong effect which the salinity of the medium exerts on the morphological development of Artemia is now widely recognised."

Language and Social Disadvantage - Theory into Practice (Paperback): J. Clegg Language and Social Disadvantage - Theory into Practice (Paperback)
J. Clegg
R1,546 Discovery Miles 15 460 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Language and Social Disadvantage" critically analyses and reviews the development of language in direct relation to social disadvantage in the early years and beyond. Definitions and descriptions of social disadvantage are addressed and wider aspects discussed. Theory and practice in relation to language development and social disadvantage are explored.

The book is divided into two sections: the first addresses the theoretical associations and relationships between social disadvantage and language, where cognition, literacy, behaviour, learning, socio-emotional development, intervention and outcomes are considered in depth. The second section applies the theory to practice, where real-life intervention studies in nurseries, schools and other contexts are reported. Research and practice based in the UK is a focus of all the chapters and research reports.

A genuinely interdisciplinary and collaborative approach is taken using perspectives from speech and language therapy, psychology and education. The book is ideal for professionals and students interested in the study of language development and intervention in the context of social disadvantage.
