Following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the U.S. Navy
started a crash program, gathering information and educating
personnel to deal with enemy bombs, land mines, and other explosive
ordnance. Figuring lawyers make the best cannon fodder, recent law
school graduate J. Frank Durham was among early volunteers for this
dangerous and highly-classified work. Graduating with a perfect
grade from the navy's new Bomb Disposal School, he was retained on
staff to help the operation expand, then dispatched to Guadalcanal,
where Americans were fighting the pivotal battle of World War Two.
While learning how to handle explosive devices, Durham endured
bombing, shelling, and an unexpected encounter with the enemy, but
tales of suspense and danger are balanced by a humorous perspective
on everyday life as an enlisted man. He describes unofficial
enterprises, manufacturing souvenirs from brass shells in the
captured Japanese ammo dump, and making moonshine from anything
available, to sell to the troops. Eleanor Roosevelt's visit to the
field hospital inspired a pithy comment about a painful loss from a
wounded marine, and a classic riposte from the First Lady. side of
the conflict.
Rethinking the Roots of Terrorism seeks to explain why terrorism
occurs. This study provides a comprehensive interdisciplinary
survey that investigates the motivations, reasons and causes of
terrorism at all levels in society, and more specifically in the
context of the Middle East. The author is critical of what he
describes as 'orthodox' terrorism discourse and the conventional
understanding of terrorism, which he argues does little to address
its root causes. He seeks to open up the debate on the causes of
terrorism by aligning it with the causes of conflict and thus using
the methods and approaches provided by conflict resolution to
rethink the roots of terrorist violence. Franks reveals the
multifarious and multilevel political, social, and economic causes
and motivations that generate terrorism, which tend to be obscured
- or worse, purposefully ignored - by the orthodox approach.
Culture Is Everything. A good leader builds and establishes a
company culture people want to be a part of. A transformational
leader elevates that, cultivating a culture in which everyone-from
the top down-is empowered to use their talents to live and work at
their best. As the chairman and CEO of Coca-Cola Consolidated, the
largest Coca-Cola bottler in the United States, J. Frank Harrison
III knows firsthand the importance of not only prioritizing culture
but also living out and modeling the values that drive it. He
believes every person in an organization matters and how they are
led matters just as much. In The Transformation Factor: Leading
Your Company for Good, for God, and for Growth, Harrison profiles
his company and his own personal journey to show you the radical
transformation and amazing ripple effects that come from a
purpose-driven, people-focused culture and a leadership style that
centers on serving others. With a company that employs over 17,000
people and has 13 manufacturing facilities and 76 distribution and
sales centers, Harrison understands that real culture
transformation takes great effort, intention, and courage but also
humility and generosity. His book is about teaching leaders how to
engage in meaningful work with people, inspire a culture of genuine
care, and mobilize everyone around a purpose that not only
transcends the everyday work they do but also informs it. It
integrates faith with work and demonstrates a revolutionary
approach to leadership, modeled after the heart of God. The
Transformation Factor shows us what it takes to commit to and
invest in people, helping them recognize their fullest potential,
and how to transform any environment into a place of vitality,
growth, and purpose. With clarity and honesty, Harrison speaks from
his experience as a leader to offer us a new way to look at
culture, business, and success
In Winning in Both Leagues J. Frank Cashen looks back over his
twenty-five-year career in baseball. Best known as the general
manager of the New York Mets during their remaking and rise to
glory in the 1980s, Cashen fills the pages with lively stories from
his baseball tenure during the last half of the twentieth century.
His career included a stint with the Baltimore Orioles of the late
’60s and ’70s, working with manager Earl Weaver and the great
teams of the early ’70s, including such players as Jim Palmer,
Frank Robinson, and Brooks Robinson. Later, tapped by Mets owner
Nelson Doubleday Jr. to bring the Mets to the pinnacle of Major
League Baseball, Cashen, with the rise of superstars Darryl
Strawberry and Dwight Gooden, led the Mets to the thrilling
come-from-behind victory over the Boston Red Sox leading to the
World Series championship in 1986. Winning in Both Leagues
also chronicles the drafting of Billy Beane, who would later be the
focus of the New York Times bestseller Moneyball. Cashen, who was a
central figure in the fierce competition with New York Yankees
owner George Steinbrenner, excelled at building winning ball clubs
and remains one of only two general managers ever to win a World
Series in both leagues.
