For over 1500 years books have weathered numerous cultural changes
remarkably unaltered. Through wars, paper shortages, radio, TV,
computer games, and fluctuating literacy rates, the bound stack of
printed paper has, somewhat bizarrely, remained the more robust and
culturally relevant way to communicate ideas. Now, for the first
time since the Middle Ages, all that is about to change.
Newspapers are struggling for readers and relevance; downloadable
music has consigned the album to the format scrap heap, and the
digital revolution is now about to leave books on the high shelf of
history. In "Print Is Dead," Gomez explains how authors, producers,
distributors, and readers must not only acknowledge these changes,
but drive digital book creation, standards, storage, and delivery
as the first truly transformational thing to happen in the world of
words since the printing press.
It is necessary to know the opinions, practices and expectations of
teachers in training and in practicing, to improve teacher
education programs. This Handbook addresses the challenges for the
profession of teaching of history and geography, who, in several
European countries such as Spain and France, share initial training
and teaching in both disciplines. Researchers' contributions have
been collected from eight countries. The majority of Spanish
universities, eleven, have shared an extensive research project,
but have also had the collaboration and participation of
researchers from seven other countries: Brazil, Canada, China,
Colombia, Portugal, Sweden and the United States. It is about
collective work, in a network, rather than the sum of individual
contributions.
Infections in Systemic Autoimmune Diseases: Risk Factors and
Management, Volume Sixteen describes the state-of-the-art of the
risk factors and management treating the most common systemic
autoimmune diseases (SADS). This updated volume consists of an
introductory chapter that provides a brief overview of what
different types of infectious diseases exist, followed by eight
chapters detailing risk factors, guidelines and recommendations per
different disease and bacterial infections. International in scope,
the list of more than 20 contributors from Europa and America reads
like a who's who of clinical researchers in the field.
This volume offers an informed and critical analysis of the
operationalization and institutionalization of the peace and
security architecture by the African Union and Africa's Regional
Economic Communities (RECs). In creating this architecture, the
African Union and the RECs tread new ground with potentially
significant consequences to the lives and livelihoods of millions
of Africans who are affected by war and armed conflict. In-depth,
critical chapters inform, clarify and provide key points for
reflection on the architecture as a whole as well as on each of the
structures currently under implementation. The volume examines the
institutions that will carry the mandate forward, raises pertinent
research questions for the successful operationalization of the
architecture and debates the medium and long-term challenges to
implementation. Students and researchers of African approaches to
peace building, conflict resolution and regional security will
benefit from the deep and critical engagement of issues covered in
this volume by world renowned scholars and practitioners.

The fields of X-Ray Spectroscopy in Atomic and Solid State Physics
have undergone spectacular growth, sometimes rather anarchic,
during the past decade. The old mold of X-ray spectroscopy has been
burst, and this ASI provided an in-depth exploration of theory and
recently developed techniques; however, some work still needs to be
done to create a new frame and reduce anarchy in the field. The
purpose of this Institute was to gather atomic and solid state
physicists working in theoretical and new experimental techniques
recently developed. The lectures were concerned with, among others,
the following fields: theory of X-ray near-edge structure, XPS and
AES with conventional and synchrotron radiation sources, PIXE,
EXAFS, SEXAFS, XRF, SXS, and molecular spectroscopy. The Institute
considered in detail some of these experimental tech niques and the
pertinent theoretical interpretations by selecting an important
list of lectures which summarize the scientific contents of the
ASI. The truly international character of this NATO ASI, its size,
and the high quality of the lecturers contributed to make this
school a very fruitful scientific meeting. Two to four general
lectures were given each working day and three afternoons were
reserved for presentation of current work in the form of posters.
We think that these poster presentations reflect the current
research work of the participants."
Software architectures that contain many dynamically interacting
components, each with its own thread of control, engaging in
complex coordination protocols, are difficult to correctly and
efficiently engineer. Agent-oriented modelling techniques are
important for the design and development of such applications. This
book provides a diverse and interesting overview of the work that
is currently being undertaken by a growing number of researchers in
the area of Agent-Oriented Software Engineering. The papers
represent a state-of-the-art report of current research in this
field, which is of critical importance in facilitating industry
take-up of powerful agent technologies.
This volume constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference
proceedings of the 9th International Workshop on Agent-Oriented
Software Engineering, AOSE 2008, held in Estoril, Portugal, in May
2008 as part of AAMAS 2008. The 20 revised full papers were
carefully selected from 50 initial submissions during two rounds of
reviewing and improvement. The papers have been organized into four
sections on: multi-agent organizations, method engineering and
software development processes, testing and debugging, as well as
tools and case studies.

Why is the Bible so often used as a tool for division and exclusion? And why are so many intelligent and compassionate people embarrassed to say they find wisdom and comfort in the Bible? In this groundbreaking book, the man Time magazine called one of the seven best preachers in America provides answers to these questions and shows what the Bible says about topics that concern Lis all, including joy, suffering, evil, and goodness. With compassion, humor, and insight, lie gives readers the tools and understanding they need to make the ancient wisdom of the Bible a dynamic part of their modern lives.

In this, the first in-depth study of the most American of holidays,
James Baker sweeps away lingering myths and misconceptions to show
how this celebration day was born and grew to be an essential part
of our national spirit. Thanksgiving: The Biography of an American
Holiday opens with an overview of the popular mythos of the holiday
before discussing its possible religious and cultural precedents.
This classic Yankee holiday is examined in historical and
contemporary detail that embraces everything from proclamations,
sermons, and local and regional traditions to family reunions,
turkey dinners, and recipes. Thanksgiving's evolving face is
illustrated with charming and often revealing period prints that
chart our changing attitudes: the influence of Victorian sentiment
in Thanksgiving's development, Progressive utilitarianism,
intellectual "debunking," patriotic wartime reclamation, and
1960s-era protest. Thanksgiving remains controversial up to the
present day, as Mayflower descendants, Native Americans, and
commercial exploiters compete for the American public's opinion of
the holiday's contemporary significance and its future status. This
is an intelligent and illuminating introduction to a beloved
holiday and a fascinating cultural history of America and
Americana.
The author of the New York Times bestseller The Good Book champions the recovery of the Western moral tradition.
Three poets come together to bring the art of poetry in its rare
